Review Treasure / Hayley Westenra:Hayley Westenra's first two albums - Odyssey and Pure - blended classical arias, traditional Irish and Maori folk songs with great success. This third album, while covering similar ground in terms of musical styles, is slightly different. Recorded in Dublin, it thematically celebrates Westenra's family roots - namely her grandparent's journey across the world from Ireland to New Zealand in the 1880s - featuring not only cover versions, but also several of her own compositions. The bad news is that the choice of covers on Treasure is not startlingly original. Songs like "Danny Boy," "Scarborough Fair", and "Shenandoah," have been sung by a thousand voices, and though Westenra's versions aren't without merit, they hardly break new ground. More interesting are Westenra's own compositions, such as "Summer Fly," a Norah Jones-esque slice of countrified folk that breaks up the smoothness of Treasure beautifully, and "Whispering Hope," a jaw-droppingly gorgeous hymn recorded a capella alongside a choir. A mixed bag of songs it is, but Westenra's enormously enchanting voice ensures it a place in any collection. -Danny McKenna.

Review The Only Piano Album You'll Ever Need / Victor:Whoever first dreamt up the title "The Only Piano/Opera/Banjo Album You'll Ever Need" must have been hoping record buyers wouldn't take it too literally. A translation would be "We Hope That When You've Listened To This You'll Want To Buy Lots More Piano/Opera/Banjo Albums". So as an attempt to lure listeners into the world of the piano, how does this set measure up? Most of the all-time favourite piano pieces are here (though you won't find Golliwogg's Cakewalk) and childhood memories may well be stirred by the likes of Für Elise and Rondo alla Turca. It's not all solo piano-the orchestra is wheeled on for the Big Moments from concertos by Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart and Rachmaninov (who also gets the famous 18th variation from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini). Among the big-name pianists represented are Geza Anda, Emanuel Ax, Emil Gilels, Vladimir Horowitz, Alfredo Perl, Kathryn Stott and Andrew Wilde. Recordings range in time from 1955 to 1999. Purists may bridle at the lollipop nature of the programme, but for those genuinely looking for an introduction to the instrument's richly rewarding repertoire, the 150 minutes of music on these two CDs should fit the bill nicely. -Keith Clarke.

Review Vivaldi - The Four Seasons / EMI Classics:What is left to be said, musically, about a work that features on around a hundred recordings in the current UK catalogue alone? In explaining that he has not been "seduced" by the "authentic" movement, Kennedy notes, "In my opinion, if a piece of music belongs only to the time in which it was written, it should not be played today". Thus his approach draws on the entire tradition of violin playing: "Once I've established an instinctive relationship with the music, I need to use every technique I know to communicate that to the listener". Communicate Nigel Kennedy certainly does, bringing a fresh eye to a work over-familiarity has consigned to background music. His "Adagio Molto" from Concerto No. 3 opens with an extraordinary spectral bowing effect, while the following "Allegro" has a zestful percussive snap. His tempos are faster, his rhythms more accentuated and dynamic, his playing more vigorous and involved than we are used to. The effect is startling and exhilarating, making this a Four Seasons to be listened to. Putting the solo instrument once more to the fore, Nigel Kennedy has done us a great service, reminding us that these truly are fine concertos, bringing this vibrant music once more to our attention. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Renaissance - Music for Inner Peace / Harry Christophers:This new release is somewhat mistitled: while most of the pieces are, in fact, from the Renaissance (or early Baroque), there are works here also by Samuel Barber, Poulenc, John Tavener, Bruckne,r and Gorecki. What they all have in common is their beauty and serenity. Perhaps the CDs subtitle, "Music for Inner Peace," also refers to a type of renaissance, i. e. , spiritual re-birth: in which case, they're right on the money. The Sixteen, led by Harry Christophers, is one of the greatest proponents of this sort of choral music in the world, and they don't disappoint here: The Allegri "Miserere," with its wickedly beautiful ascent to high C by soprano soloist, is ravishing; Barber's own arrangement of his "Adagio for strings" for chorus (1967) is polyphony at its most "renaissance" without actually being so, and Gorecki's "Totos Tuus" is otherworldly in it mysticism. The selections by Byrd, Tomkins, et al. , are, like the others, impeccably performed. Even an early piece by contemporary composer John Tavener, normally the master of excruciatingly pretentiousness, is lovely. This recording is a gem. [+]

Review Serenade / Katherine Jenkins:Following on from the heady success of albums like Premiere, Second Nature and Living A Dream, Welsh mezzos-oprano and sometime fashion model and music teacher Katherine Jenkins now presents her fourth collection of classically-rendered hymns, arias and pop classics. Serenade seems an understated title for someone with such a soaring voice and dynamic range, yet fans will know Jenkins is more than capable of balancing her operatic cartwheels with moments of real tenderness. This is evidenced immediately on the album's opening track, an elegant version of Bryan Adams' "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You", sung in Italian with Adams himself featured on guitar. The same undulations of quietude and drama unfold throughout the rest of the LP as Jenkins recreates timeless classics such as "Dear Lord And Father", "Lisa Lan", "Chance In A Lifetime" and "O Mio Babbino Caro" with characteristic grace and aplomb. -Danny McKenna.

Review Puccini: La Bohème / Decca:From the exquisite phrasing of the opening orchestra, this recording establishes itself as the standard by which all others should be measured. Herbert von Karajan's orchestra is no less than perfect, as much a virtuostic performer as the singers, evoking each moment's unique mood. Can there be any doubt that Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni were born to sing Puccini? Their sweet, creamy voices splendidly blend, creating a complete aural portrait of the bohemians' souls. Elizabeth Harwood is a wonderfully high-strung Musetta, with the vocal talent to support her many moods. The greatest recording ever of the world's most beloved opera. -Barbara Eisner Bayer.
