Review An Equal Music / Verwandte Stimmen - Music From the Novel / Vikram Seth:Vikram Seth's novel An Equal Music is as evocative a portrait of the world of chamber music as you could wish for, but Seth is the first to say that words "can only attempt to describe what cannot truly be described". This two-CD set adds the inevitably missing dimension to a great book, with performances of works which feature in the story. They include the world-premiere recording of Beethoven's String Quintet in C minor, an obscure work which is central to the plot. This, like the rest of the selection, is beautifully played and recorded, for this is not a collection of second-rate recordings cobbled together to suit the theme. Vikram Seth himself has chosen the performances and, with performers of the stature of Iona Brown and Andras Schiff, the playing is as good as it gets. Included in the selection is Schubert's celebrated "Trout" Quintet. If the book gives a taste for the music and vice versa, these CDs will also get us delving further into this delightful and infectious repertoire. -Keith Clarke.

Review Viaggio Italiano / Andrea Bocelli:Opera is in fashion, and the woods are full of pop vocalists who think they have the chops to sing arias. The best contender so far is Andrea Bocelli, who at least has a real voice, if a small one, and sometimes manages a really exciting tenor sound. Unfortunately, he is inconsistent in his tone and production, and, despite the fact that he's singing in his native language, he often sounds as though he has only the barest idea of what the words mean. The Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, plays stodgily. Anyone with a real interest in tenor arias would be much better advised to check out recordings by the young Luciano Pavarotti. -Sarah Bryan Miller.

Review Bram Stoker's Dracula Original Soundtrack / Columbia:Francis Ford Coppola took an inspired gamble in hiring the Polish composer to realise his Gothic stage production made for the cinema screen. Nothing about Kilar conforms to Hollywood. His classical works and earlier European films for the likes of Polanski and Zanussi, show a style based upon a repetitive form that insinuates itself upon the ear until it becomes unforgettable. "Vampire Hunters" is a superb example, being a cyclic string and brass motif that develops an exciting dynamic by revolving between keys. A pounding drum keeps time and rhythm for a flawlessly edited scene of destroying the vampire's lair. There is also the exquisite theme for Mina and Dracula, which in "Love Remembered" is presented on the composer's favoured instrument, flute. Again, it's through instrumental interchange across repetitions of the theme that the piece achieves its effect. A little sound design ("The Ring Of Fire") offers pause before the tender choral dénouement. Despite the tail-end pop song, this was a blockbuster debut without precedent. -Paul Tonks.

Review The King`s Singers / King's Singers:As the line in the opening track "The Peanut Vendor" says: "Fifty million monkeys can't be wrong. " And back in 1971 the buyers of this debut LP (originally The King's Singers: By Appointment) found overwhelming proof in its vinyl grooves that a refreshingly new quality product was on the market. Soon the unlikely lads (Nigel Perrin, Alastair Hume, Alastair Thompson, Anthony Holt, Simon Carrington and Brian Kay) were all over our television screens in the company of the likes of Val Doonican, Shirley Bassey and Nana Mouskouri-also, of course, performing bucketloads of serious repertoire in concerts. For those who rushed to buy the original, this re-release is a real trip down memory lane, the excellent sound enhanced by the extra detail and colour in the CD transfer (though, please note, there is less than 35 minutes of music). "Cherry Ripe", "Scarborough Fair", Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" and lots more, performed with that familiar mix of vocal perfection and effortless poise, complemented by the discreet contribution of the Gordon Langford Trio. The annoying thing nonetheless is that such dazzling accomplishment was in the long run subject to mere fashion, at least in the UK. The current King's Singers dazzle just the same, but they are more to be seen on foreign TV screens than ever at home. Shame! -Andrew Green.

Review John Rutter: Music for Christmas / Hyperion:In an introduction to this disc of Christmas music, John Rutter tellingly commends the Christmas carol as one of the few forms that permits "serious" composers to write tunes, regardless of whatever political correctness rules the avant-garde of the day. And he's been exploiting that licence with a vengeance ever since, as a Cambridge student, he composed the jaunty little number that remains his greatest hit-"The Shepherd's Pipe Carol". Needless to say it's on this disc, along with the good, bad and indifferent of his Christmas output through the past 40 years, immaculately sung by one of the most accomplished professional choirs in the business under its superlatively accomplished founder-director Stephen Layton. And I defy anyone inclined to marginalise Rutter as middlebrow not to be touched by the eloquence, charm and craft of his work when it's done like this, in ideal conditions. At its worst the music is derivative but fun. At best it's irresistibly endearing. Not for nothing does he rival Howard Blake as English music's Mr Christmas, and this seasonally timed release delivers the evidence encyclopaedically-it's a perfect stocking-filler. -Michael White.
