Review The Very Best of Cleo Laine [BOX SET] / Cleo Laine:

Blessed with both a natural jazz instinct and an extraordinary range covering several octaves, Cleo Laine is one of the outstanding singers of our times. Her husky low notes and astonishing forays in the upper registers make her voice uniquely identifiable. She makes the most intelligent use of an eclectic span of material and her recordings are always filled with delightful surprises. The sweep of music in this remarkable collection reflects all that and her lyrics here have been composed by some of the best writers of the times, starting with one W. Shakespeare, who has three of his best numbers-"O Mistress Mine", "It Was A Lover And His Lass" and "Shall I Compare Thee To A Summers Day"-treated with imagination and grace. Standards by Arlen and Alec Wilder rub shoulders with compositions by Laine's husband John Dankworth. The latter's "Dunsinane Blues" is a swinging and delightful exercise in Shakespearean gore and ghosts and his setting of an Auden poem is written with taste and purpose. Guests include guitarist John Williams-a most delicate partnership with Laine on three tracks-and pianist Dudley Moore. -Steve Voce.

Review The Original Four Seasons / Vanessa-Mae:

This recording achieves the Herculean task of rescuing Vivaldi's oft- performed concerti from the hackneyed oblivion of elevator music, and ingeniously resuscitating them in an arresting and enthralling manner. It as if the parched roots of these pieces have been watered with something rather bracing and slightly alcoholic, and suddenly shot into blooms of brilliant red and electric blue. Vanessa-Mae, her producer Pamela Nicholson, and the group of highly acclaimed soloists and professors which makes up the orchestra Laureate, have all contributed to these exciting arrangements. The starting premise was that Vivaldi would have expected his soloists to embellish and elaborate the solo parts for themselves: on this recording that has meant fleshing out the orchestral parts so that they stretch the techniques of everyone involved, and turning the solo part itself into a Paganini-esque jeu d'esprit. (Following Sir Thomas Beecham's advice, who said that a harpsichord sounds like "skeletons copulating on a galvanised tin roof", that instrument has judiciously been omitted!) And the wonderful thing is that the programmatic sense of the seasons- - birds twittering, teeth chattering, hay-gathering etc-is not mocked, but reinforced. -Warwick Thompson.

Review Vaughan Williams - A London Symphony (original version) / Chandos:

Penned between 1911 and 1913 and first heard in May 1914, Vaughan Williams's A London Symphony was dedicated to the memory of George Butterworth (whose ravishing 1913 idyll The Banks of Green Willow opens proceedings here). It's this original version that Richard Hickox and the LSO champion so eloquently on this sumptuous-sounding Chandos issue-and a very different beast it is from VW's final revision of 1933. For starters, there's more than a quarter-of-an-hour of extra material, much of it genuinely inspired and brimful of wondrous poetry. VW's scoring, too, was never more colourful and it's surely not too fanciful to detect many a foreshadowing of Holst's The Planets in particular. More significantly, the work takes on a darker, tragic dimension (nowhere more potently perhaps than in the slow movement) and there's an astonishing passage in the expanded epilogue that even anticipates the opening movement of the 1921 Pastoral Symphony. In hindsight, VW made all the right decisions (the scherzo's second half, haunting though it is, pales next to the shuddering intensity of the revised coda) but no one should miss the opportunity to experience his original thoughts in all their epic sweep and tingling vitality. Utterly compulsive listening then and a "must buy" if ever there was one. -Andrew Achenbach.

Review Sibelius - Finlandia; Karelia Suite / Naxos:

Opening this concert is Sibelius' overture Finlandia, composed for a gala in Helsinki to support the right of free speech at a time when the nation was under Russian domination. The work became a symbol of Finland's struggle for independence, and virtually the country's unofficial national anthem. Instantly recognisable, it is the most famous Finish music ever composed. Apart from his seven symphonies, Sibelius' major legacy is the series of tone poems he was inspired to write by Finish history and legend. The Karelia Suite is his revision of music originally written for a sequence of tableaux portraying the history of Karelia. Drawing on folk influences, this is melodic, celebratory and most attractive music. The major work on the album, though, is the Lemminkäinen Suite. Lemminkäinen was described by Sibelius as "the Don Juan of Finnish mythology". Here the philanderer undergoes a series of adventures, including a bleak sojourn in the underworld, before the mystical melancholy of the most famous movement, "The Swan of Tuonela", and the heroism of " Lemminkäinen's Return". This is an intelligently compiled programme, superbly played and recorded. [+]
Petri Sakari and the Iceland SO have also recorded Sibelius' Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3, which are worthy of further exploration. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Bach - Goldberg Variations / Hyperion:

The set of variations which Bach wrote for the young virtuoso Goldberg to play to their patron, the Russian ambassador, were intended to be heard either in groups or one at a time. Hewitt's sensitive and intelligent performance is particularly notable for its tact and sense of decorum. The use of piano instead of harpsichord brings a forensic clarity and a plangent sense of the music's emotional content without importing an inappropriate level of drama to the proceedings. She is particularly eloquent in some of the slower variations, such as the intense and private No. 25, but is also highly effective in the sprightlier dance movements, such as No. 19. -Roz Kaveney.

Review Shostakovich: The Jazz Album / Decca:

Riccardo Chailly has proved himself adept in the highways and byways of Shostakovich's output. You really feel he enjoys this music, conducting it with relish and not a hint of condescension. Admittedly the Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings has real pathos in its second movement to offset the brittle humour and high jinx elsewhere. Ronald Brautigam brings a Gershwin-like uninhibitedness to his performance, with Peter Masseurs incisive yet elegant in the trumpet part. The two jazz suites are peripheral Shostakovich, but great fun all the same. The Concertgebouw's resident jazzers would clearly give any professional combo a run for its money, especially in the lengthy Second Suite, assembled from film and theatre scores. Tahiti Trot is even more intriguing than it sounds: an orchestral transcription of the 1920s hit "Tea For Two", made in a matter of hours to win a bet. Its a far cry from Shostakovich as we tend to think of him, yet valuable for throwing light on the heady era out of which the mature composer forcibly emerged. -Richard Whitehouse.
