Review Two Horizons / Moya Brennan:A lovely work notable for both its cohesiveness and its aural richness, Two Horizons stands as probably the most broadly appealing solo disc (now numbering five) yet released by Clannad vocalist Moya (aka Máire) Brennan, the oft-overshadowed elder sibling of Enya. Brennan uses a mythic tale involving a much-travelled harp (a totem for all things virtuous) as the disc's thematic centre, yet it is the recording's composite sound-resonant, sumptuous, never quite overblown-that inspires repeated listenings. Brennan, who takes several turns on harp, explores a satisfying middle ground between mod and medieval, blending traditional Irish instrumentation with understated electronics and, on occasion, gently propulsive rhythms (akin to what you might hear from Dido), then adorning the whole with a gossamer New Age veil. The effect, as displayed in transitions throughout the disc (such as the shift from the dreamy "Is It Now" to the techno-spiced "Mothers of the Desert"), can be mesmerising. Like morphing clouds in an expansive sky, the disc's 15 core tracks float by in an enchanting, atmospheric procession, with no jarring disruptions (other than a tacked-on club remix at the disc's conclusion) to break the spell. -Terry Wood, Amazon. com.

Review Gesualdo: Tenebrae / ECM New Series:Vocal ensemble performance doesn't get any more technically polished or musically affecting than this offering from the Hilliard Ensemble-an example of what happens when a group of individual singers performs as a spiritual entity. Of course, the music-the liturgically solemn tenebrae responsories-makes a perfect medium for such a performance, but these works by late-16th/early 17th-century composer Carlo Gesualdo are notoriously difficult, owing to their unorthodox harmonic and melodic language. For this recording the Hilliards augmented the group's usual four male voices with three additional singers, countertenor, tenor, and bass, fully exploring and exploiting Gesualdo's rich tonal landscape while conveying the work's profound spirituality. The sonorities' effects are alternately chilling, unnerving, calming, and comforting. The sound is exemplary. -David Vernier.

Review For the Stars / Elvis Costello:For the Stars is the result of a unique collaboration between songwriting legend Elvis Costello and Anne Sofie Von Otter, one of the world's leading mezzo-sopranos. Working with a host of acclaimed musicians, including Abba's Benny Andersson, Costello takes Von Otter out of the concert hall and off the opera stage, and into Stockholm's Atlantis studios, birthplace of Abba's early albums. The outcome is an hour-long disc of 18 perfectly-crafted tracks, including several new numbers penned by Costello as well as songs by the likes of Tom Waits, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and Lennon and McCartney. Throughout, Otter's warm and elegant voice is utterly captivating, adding a new dimension to many familiar songs (I defy anyone not to be touched by her heartbreaking rendition of "Baby Plays Around"). On the handful of tracks where both Otter and Costello sing, her controlled and refined tones contrast with-and complement-his familiar gruffness.
