Review The Greatest Opera Show on Earth / Decca:This really is a remarkable collection, and anyone even remotely interested in opera is bound to be vastly entertained by it. Almost everything and everyone is here, albeit in small doses: Tebaldi, Pavarotti (a lot), Bjoerling, Bartoli, Sutherland, Solti, Karajan, Troyanos, Gheorghiu, Nucci; the composers are Puccini, Verdi, Bizet, and all the other usual suspects. There are plenty of fine compilation sets on the market, and this is one of the best. One can only hope that it whets listeners' appetites for whole operas. -Robert Levine.

Review A Danish Christmas / Naxos:Offering 77 minutes of music and a 28-page booklet with Danish and English texts, A Danish Christmas is an anthology comparable to the best full-price releases. Insightful notes by Andrew Smith explain the significance of carols in the traditional Danish Christmas celebrations, helpfully setting the scene for this celebratory collection. Here is elegantly appealing music by composers famous (Carl Nielson's tender, "My Heart Always Wanders"), unfamiliar (Egil Harder's "The Christmas Tree With Its Decorations") and unknown-for many of these carols derive from the folk tradition. "Praise Be To You, Jesus Christ" is one of four carols to feature exquisite soprano singing from one of Musica Ficta's excellent soloists, though the majority depend purely upon the ensemble's finely balanced choral sound. Formed in 1996 by composer and conductor Bo Holton, this group are splendidly accomplished, whether it be with simple monophonic lines, or the more complex and thrilling polyphony of "What A Great Throng And Noise". They have also recorded a programme of church music by Ockeghem, which includes a fine Requiem. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Vaughan Williams: Job/The Lark ascending / Naxos:Job-A Masque for Dancing was composed between 1927-30, inspired by the Old Testament and by William Blake's watercolours comprising his Book of Job, as well as by early English dance and the masques of the Restoration. This concert version was actually premiered with Vaughan Williams himself conducting, eight months before the stage version made its definitive mark on English ballet. Composed just prior to the Fourth Symphony, the work is itself of symphonic length, though divided into nine pictorial scenes, anticipates both the composer's commitment to film and his programmatic Sinfonia Antarctica. For this drama of the enduring power of faith, Vaughan Williams wrote for orchestra augmented by a wide range of percussion, organ, and as the voice of Satan, a sensuous, sinuous saxophone. The result is a poetic, richly imaginative work, which in this dynamic, detailed reading by David Lloyd Jones comes to fervent, ferocious yet intensely lyrical life. The coupling is the enduringly popular Lark Ascending, a pastoral romance for violin and orchestra. Here soloist David Greed seems to breathe the very essence of the English countryside, his violin singing in deeply expressive tones to express rapturously the timeless folk-like beauty of one of Vaughan Williams's best loved works. -Gary S. Review Copland the Populist / Red Seal:The three Copland classics on this disc-Billy the Kid, Appalachian Spring and Rodeo-are all ballet scores, and from the very first bars of Billy, with its evocative depiction of the wide-open prairies, you are firmly in the territory of music that tells a story. But you don't need to follow all the ins and outs of each story to enjoy music which paints as vivid a picture of rural America as you could hope for. If the sprightly "Hoe Down" from Rodeo brings a splash of colour to concert programmes, the remarkable thing about so much of the music in these three pieces is how quietly sensitive it is. And while Michael Tilson Thomas does not hold back in wringing every last ounce of splashy razzmatazz, he is equally the master of introspective music which clearly demonstrates that you don't need to be loud to be a populist. The recordings were made in the San Francisco Symphony's home, Davies Symphony Hall. You couldn't hope for more authentic performances than this-more than 76 minutes of dyed-in-the-wool Americana. -Keith Clarke.

Review Maria Callas - La divina / EMI:If you want to know the reason behind all the fuss about Maria Callas, buy this CD. Callas's great gift was not purity of tone or emission, reliability, or sheer loveliness; it was, rather, her ability to change her vocal colour and style to suit not only particular periods of opera but to get under the skin of the individual characters she portrayed. Here you will hear the 18-year-old Butterfly imagining the return of her beloved; the sultry, adult Carmen seducing all around her; the youthful Wally telling her cruel father that she will go off into the cold wilderness rather than give up her boyfriend; the sly Rosina planning to outfox her guardian; the priestess Norma performing a sacred rite; Dalila wrapping Samson around her little finger and more; Gioconda contemplating suicide when all hope is gone; Gilda recalling the name of the boy she's just fallen for; and the icy princess Turandot reliving the rape of her ancestor and swearing that no man will possess her. And you'll believe them all. At times Callas's vocalism is a bit wiry (Juliette sounds stressed, for instance); but, in all, this is like a visit with 16 women, all of them interesting, and all of them great singers! -Robert Levine.
