Review Shostakovich: The String Quartets / Fitzwilliam String Quartet:The Fitzwilliam Quartet is English by birth but shows a lot of Russian soul in these works, which were recorded in consultation with the composer. Their technique is flawless, their immersion in the music total, their interaction with one another and with the music spontaneous and intense. Priced competitively with the Borodin Quartet, they do not have any added attraction to match the Piano Quintet in that set, but this close-up stereo recording is significantly better. Highlights of the set include the relaxed, folk-flavoured No. 1; the tense, autobiographical No. 8, which recalls the terrors of World War II, quotes a lot of Shostakovich's earlier works, and mourns for the "victims of fascism and war"; the contrasts of quiet beauty and fierce intensity in No. 10; and the bold structure of No. 15, Shostakovich's last quartet, in which he looks at death, steadily and without blinking. -Joe McLellan.

Review Einstein on the Beach / Philip Glass:Phalanxes of woodwinds, organs, and voices pulse through Philip Glass's most famous opera like nothing so much as a migratory flock engaged in acrobatics overhead. There is no centre to the kinetic activity; the down beat might shift, in split-second hindsight, to the up beat, and the synthesiser might suddenly upstage the libretto of nonsense syllables. The exuberant cacophony of overlapping scripts makes the term "counterpoint" seem inadequate, antiquated. Such was Glass's hope, of course, when on the 200th anniversary of the founding of the USA, he consolidated influences as diverse as raga, minimalism and progressive rock to produce one of the few canonical works of late-20th-century opera. The title subject might be taken as a pretext for mathematical reverie, but as much as this is "experimental" music it is a work of art, not science. The ostensible absence of narrative-despite strong voice-over-like recitatives, written in part by the vocalists-is made up for by the lengthy work's dramatic setting, staged by Robert Wilson, and the intense forward momentum of Glass' composition. -Marc Weidenbaum.

Review New Year's Concert 2003 / Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra:The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year Concert, which has taken place annually since 1941, is possibly the most famous musical event in the world. Broadcast live from Vienna's Musikverein to dozens of countries, the concert has a worldwide audience in excess of 50 million people. Equally impressive is the time it has taken for Deutsche Grammophon to produce this two-CD live recording-just 27 days. The 2003 concert, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, was the usual Straussfest, with favourites such as The Blue Danube, the Emperor Waltz and the Radetzky March. For the first time, music by Brahms (his Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 and 6) and Weber (Berlioz's orchestration of Invitation to the Dance) were on the programme; they fit in perfectly. The New Year Concert is always a joyous occasion, conveyed here not only by the energetic and poised performances from the Vienna Phil (clearly no hangovers from the previous night's celebrations!) but also by the receptive audience whose cheers and applause can be heard throughout. Also included is Harnoncourt's short address-delivered in German but with no English translation given. -Rebecca Agnew.
