Review Handel: Ombra mai fu / Harmonia Mundi:Andreas Scholl is without doubt one of the most extraordinary singers to have exploded into public prominence within recent years. With some counter-tenors, it sometimes feels as if one is listening out of duty, or out of respect to "authentic" practice-with Scholl, as with all truly great singers, you listen because you can't stop. His voice is crystal pure throughout its range, and perfectly controlled by a remarkable technique. But more than that, he performs with such engaging warmth that whether he is being romantic, angry or lachrymose he is always totally convincing. On this disc of opera arias by Handel, he gives the impression that the composer had him in mind when he wrote them, so completely does he get under the skin of each one. In addition to performing the classics of the counter-tenor repertoire, such as "Verdi prati" and "Ombra mai fu", he also explores some unfamiliar territory with a delicious aria from the little-known Admeto. He is accompanied by the Akademie für Alte Music, who match his phrasing with almost shocking accuracy and support him with effortless ease. - Warwick Thompson.

Review Debussy / Franck / Ravel: Sonata for Flute, Viola & Harp / Sonata for Violin & Piano etc. / Kyung Wha Chung Radu Lupu Osian Ellis The Melos Ensemble Of London:Kyung-Wha Chung and Radu Lupu collaborate on the most musical account of the Franck sonata in the catalogue, one that restores to the work its Gallic elegance, a quality that rarely survives the passion of most performances. Their reading is intimately expressive, almost fragile, and in Chung's playing the dreaminess of the score is beautifully evoked. With his brilliant technique and sparing use of the pedal, Lupu manages an extraordinary revelation of detail in the piano part, transforming what usually sounds like a furnace going full blast-lots of heat and noise, but not something you'd want to get too close to-into a source of poetry. The recording, made in 1977, is warm and approachable, like the performance. At mid-price, and generously filled out (with Ravel's Introduction and Allegro, and Debussy's Sonatas for Violin and Piano and for Flute, Viola, and Harp) this is as basic as a disc can get. -Ted Libbey.
