Review Bach: Solo & Double Violin Concertos (BWV 1041-1043, 1060) /Manze · Podger · AAM / Andrew Manze:It is well known that most of Bach's harpsichord concertos began their lives as violin concertos. Since only three violin originals survive-the ones designated as BWV 1041-43-and since these are among his greatest instrumental works, musical scholars and performers have been reversing the process, turning the harpsichord concertos back into violin originals. BWV 1060 is one such case, a concerto for two harpsichords, which sounds much less clangy and bangy in this reconstructed version for two violins. Now Andrew Manze is simply the finest baroque violinist alive, and so this recording is self-recommending on that count alone. It is just about perfect. -David Hurwitz.

Review Russell Watson: The Voice / Decca:Russell Watson's story is a classic rags-to-riches fairytale: the former welder, after years of singing in pubs and clubs, travelled from Salford, his hometown, to London. He turned up unannounced at the Decca offices and was promptly signed up by one of the most important classical labels in the world. Vocal coaching followed, as did a number of successful live appearances supporting Cliff Richard. Now we have this 14-track CD which explores a wide range of musical styles. Watson's Italian is a little ponderous in tracks such as "Amor ti vieta", but this is more than compensated by his captivating and utterly natural-sounding tenor voice. The inevitable popular arias are there, namely "La donna è mobile" and "Nessun dorma!", sung with a refreshing and youthful vitality. Pop tracks, including Ultravox's classic 1980s hit "Vienna" and a witty cover version of "Barcelona" sung with former Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder as well as two new songs sit comfortably on the disc-Watson performs them with integrity, not simply paying lip service to the music of his generation. Watson has the potential to do for classical music what Jamie Oliver has done for cookery, and there are few people to whom this debut CD will not appeal. -Rebecca Agnew.

Review Amour - The Voice of Romance / Natasha Marsh:With her versatile soprano, stunning good looks and unflinching passion for opera, Natasha Marsh has become a firm favourite with classical fans. Amour, her debut album, may come as a surprise to those familiar with her classical repertoire however, since it showcases not only her love of arias but her fondness for classic pop songs and movie soundtracks too. While Marsh's voice is inevitably capable of hitting the soaring heights demanded of pieces such as Verdi's "Si Un Jour" (theme from Jean de Florette, which opens the album), Satie's "Gymnopedie No. 1" and Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadix," Marsh sounds surprisingly comfortable when tackling non-classical material - the sweeping romance of "Autumn Leaves," for example, or the dreamy undulations of Ewan McColl's "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face. " Likewise, her love of films (she studied music and drama and is equally passionate about both disciplines) adds an interesting undercurrent to the album, in particular her stirring renditions of Nino Rota's "Al Giochi Addio" (a. k. a. the theme from Romeo & Juliet) and Bacalov's "Mi Mancherai" (the theme from Il Postino). Overall, Amour is sure to further establish Natasha Marsh as a seriously sonorous and highly accessible all-rounder. -Danny McKenna.

Review Williams: Schindler's List Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] / MCA Records:Because he's long been stereotyped by the rousing neo-romantic adventure scores for the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park franchises, it's easy to forget that composer John Williams is hardly idiomatically challenged. When Steven Spielberg gratifyingly used the clout of his enormous commercial success to produce and direct this brave Holocaust drama, his long-time musical collaborator used the opportunity to display both the depth and maturity of his musical gifts and training, producing a score with sad, evocative melodies frequently carried by the violin of the great Itzhak Perlman. Rich with ethnic nuance and showcasing the composer's masterful orchestral/choral subtlety, Williams's emotionally compelling score for Schindler's List also won the Academy Award for Best Dramatic Score. -Jerry McCulley.

Review Pärt: Tabula Rasa / ECM New Series:This package presents two of Arvo Pürt's most familiar works-already indisputable classics-Tabula Rasa and Fratres. For all of their "minimalist" technique, there's a fathomless-call it timeless, if you will-beauty to these scores the deeper you plunge into their hypnotic sound world. The best place to discover them remains ECM's breakthrough release Tabula Rasa. Unlike Gidon Kremer (the superb interpreter of that recording), and despite an epiphany he mentions in the booklet-likening this music to the desert landscape of Utah-Gil Shaham doesn't seem to grasp one of the key components of that beauty: its austerity, its distance, as through a glass. There's an exquisite finish to his tone, to be sure, but Shaham essentially over-romanticises this music, coating it with a lovely but undifferentiated sheen, although he does hint at the vocal character of his lines. Passages of Fratres thus sound curiously tamed, as if we could be listening to such pastoral blandishments as The Lark Ascending or, in Tabula Rasa, to a Vivaldi andante. Despite this disappointment, the disc offers a thoroughly compelling account of the Third Symphony (1971) by its dedicatee, Neeme Järvi. It's fascinating to hear Pärt's points of origin-Soviet music, chant from the Orthodox Church, the fascination with bell sounds-so clearly delineated and transmogrified as in this work. Järvi molds its colourful but sombre scoring into vividly dramatic shapes, hinting at Shostakovich in the chasm-deep bass lines tugging against the piercing treble or-as in the haunting opening solo-at the bleak majesty of a Sibelius landscape. The very success of Pärt's better-known works has tended to obscure the quality of such earlier pieces, but this performance helps widen the perspective to a more inclusive one. [+]
