Review A Christmas Present From Motown - Volume 2 / Various Artists:A Christmas Present From Motown Volume Two contains a further 18 festive offerings from the Sound Of Young America. Once again, selections include traditional carols, seasonal standards and newly penned yuletide numbers, mostly recorded during the 60s. Not surprisingly, there is yet another version of "White Christmas". This time Diana Ross & the Supremes provide a schmaltzy Disney-esque reading. bah humbug. Far better is Diana and the gals' "Little Bright Star", a stomping pocket symphony. Remarkably, the titan-tonsilled Kim Weston injects genuine emotion into hubby William "Mickey" Stevenson's otherwise flimsy "Wish You A Merry Christmas". More substantial is a stately "Silent Night", which finds the Four Tops hooking up with Aretha Franklin. [+]
The Four Tops also contribute a bizarre version of "'Twas The Night Before Christmas", which appears to be narrated by a black Detroit equivalent of "the laughing Policeman". Also entering into the mood of rosy cheeked capering are the Jackson 5, who gleefully scamper through the aptly frivolous version of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". -Chris King.

Review Cathedral Voices / Classics:Anyone who has ever sung in a church choir or choral society will enjoy this two-disc compilation of religious choral music. Some 29 tracks of complete short works or excerpts from larger pieces, written over the past 500 years, have been selected from recordings by cathedral, chapel and professional choirs. They range from Tallis's Spem in Alium to Arvo Pärt's De Profundis and Britten's A. M. D. G. , and include the Schütz Choir of London singing a chorus from Brahms' German Requiem, Harry Christophers and the Sixteen performing a Poulenc motet, the Taverner Consort, which provides six tracks, and the Bamburg Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (with soprano Christiane Oelze as soloist) singing Bruckner's setting of Psalm 150. Much of this music is more familiar today in the concert hall than in a liturgical setting, and whether some of the composers were religious or not, or even believed in God, hardly matters. The sound of combined human voices and the words they had to set inspired them all to produce music that is simultaneously calming and uplifting, allowing them to create music that continues to reach deep into the human psyche. -Richard Fawkes.

Review The McGarrigle Christmas Hour / Kate and Anna McGarrigle:Kate and Anna McGarrgile have a storied recording career that spans a slate of five-star albums that includes original music and songs from the French Canadian world, American ragtime and other "old world" genres. They would appear to be quaint to most ears if they weren't so damn good at blending the past and their modern sensibilities in memorable verse and song. Enter their Christmas record into that same framework, as the sisters and a few friends (Emmylou Harris) and family members (Rufus and Martha Wainwright are the children of Kate)mix up the old and new. The French song "Il Est Ne" is rounded out with a shimmering round of vocal backing harmonies while Rufus' "Spotlight on Christmas" (penned a couple years ago) and his wonderfully fey reading of "What Are Your Doing Christmas Eve?" prove to be just three highlights of another five-star effort. Although it will be an acquired taste to some, the McGarrigle Christmas Hour is like spending quality time in Kate and Anna's parlor. There the piano, fiddles, other instruments and friendly voices are ready to satisfy with old world charm that could never be mistaken for old school insignificance. -Martin Keller.

Review A Christmas Present From Motown - Volume 1 / Various Artists:Pop music wise, Christmas is traditionally soundtracked by that "blimmin' Slade tune" and a host of even more irksome ditties. So, thank the Lord for Berry Gordy and his Hitsville roster, whose A Christmas Present From Motown Volume 1 features 18 soulful seasonal songs. Selections include traditional carols, Christmas evergreens and a smattering of specially written festive numbers, mostly recorded during Motown's 60s and early 70s heyday. The Temptations offer a swoonsome croonsome Bing-like reading of "White Christmas", alongside their doo-wop gospel take on "Silent Night". On a more up-tempo tip are Smokey's self-penned shuffler, "Christmas Every Day", and the Jackson 5's playful "Frosty The Snowman". The Four Tops are dreaming of a blues Christmas with the bourbon soaked "Merry Christmas Baby"; Marvin Gaye's "Purple Snowflakes" is a balmy beauty; and Stevie Wonder contributes a trio of tunes in the supper club soul style of his early Tamla hits. Somewhat predictably, Diana Ross provides the only mawkish moment. "Children's Christmas Song" is as hideous as it sounds and yes, there's a vomit-inducing spoken interlude and a kids chorus. Program your CD to skip this track and have a merry Christmas. -Chris King.

Review Now - the Christmas Album / Various Artists:Tis the season to be jolly, and what better to kick of the proceedings than Slade and Wizzard with those perennial seasonal favourites "Merry Xmas Everybody" and "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday". The Now Christmas collection stands head and shoulders above the field of festive compilations as it actually has a lot of unusual tracks-the titles may be familiar, but the artists doing them are all quite unexpected. Hence you get Kylie purring her way through "Santa Baby", the Spice Girls indulging in some "Christmas Wrapping" before taking you on a "Sleigh Ride", Samantha Mumba telling us "All I Want For Christmas", Billie Piper casting her eye back to "Last Christmas" and Ronan Keating teaming up with Maire Brennan for a "Fairytale Of New York". These tracks work to varying degrees, but there are plenty more traditional originals on offer to sate the most hearty of holiday appetites-from Bing Crosby crooning his way through "White Christmas" to Aled Jones taking his Snowman by the hand while they go "Walking In The Air". No Christmas compilation should be without Cliff Richard, and sure enough he puts in an appearance with "Mistletoe And Wine" and "The Millennium Prayer". A worthy addition to the Now stables, and a thoroughbred through and through. -Helen Marquis.

Review Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics [EXPLICIT LYRICS] / Various Artists:Third time's the charm! Chef Aid was padded with "inspired by" songs, and the Bigger, Longer, & Uncut soundtrack by gratuitous remixes. Here at last is an album containing nothing but the series characters warbling away. From the show itself is "Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo" (embellished with some randomly inserted lyrics), "The Lonely Jew On Christmas" (with a special guest impersonation), and "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel" (with the whole Broflofski family suffering Cartman' s anti-semitism). Guaranteed instant new favourites are "Merry F***ing Christmas" (from Mr. Garrison in fine voice), "I Saw Three Ships" (Shelley Marsh getting ribbed for her teeth braces), and "The Most Offensive Song Ever" (Kenny and Mr. Hankey thinking the virgin birth through). In addition there' s contributions from Satan, Hitler, Chef, and Mr. Mackey-all made that bit more special by Marc Shaiman' s arrangements. The real success of this disc (as always) are the songs from Cartman. [+]
"O Holy Night" reaffirms what makes the holiday for kids-presents! And "Swiss Colony Beef Log" is possibly the best song the show has ever produced. It' s a mod-rock parody with the "big-boned" boy bewailing the absence of his favourite Xmas snack. In a word: sweeeeeeet. -Paul Tonks.
