Review A Christmas Present From Motown - Volume 1 / Various Artists:

Pop music wise, Christmas is traditionally soundtracked by that "blimmin' Slade tune" and a host of even more irksome ditties. So, thank the Lord for Berry Gordy and his Hitsville roster, whose A Christmas Present From Motown Volume 1 features 18 soulful seasonal songs. Selections include traditional carols, Christmas evergreens and a smattering of specially written festive numbers, mostly recorded during Motown's 60s and early 70s heyday. The Temptations offer a swoonsome croonsome Bing-like reading of "White Christmas", alongside their doo-wop gospel take on "Silent Night". On a more up-tempo tip are Smokey's self-penned shuffler, "Christmas Every Day", and the Jackson 5's playful "Frosty The Snowman". The Four Tops are dreaming of a blues Christmas with the bourbon soaked "Merry Christmas Baby"; Marvin Gaye's "Purple Snowflakes" is a balmy beauty; and Stevie Wonder contributes a trio of tunes in the supper club soul style of his early Tamla hits. Somewhat predictably, Diana Ross provides the only mawkish moment. "Children's Christmas Song" is as hideous as it sounds and yes, there's a vomit-inducing spoken interlude and a kids chorus. Program your CD to skip this track and have a merry Christmas. -Chris King.

Review Christmas Songs / Diana Krall The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra:

As the song goes, "Merry Christmas" has already "been said many times, many ways". Diana Krall's Christmas Songs is a worthy-though not particularly unique-addition to the holiday catalogue. Krall excels with an approach mastered long ago: elegant delivery that gives extra polish to a very familiar lineup. Some might find her style frosty at times, but that will come as a relief to those who want their carolers to cut through some of the holiday treacle and create a festive, yet grown-up vibe. And Krall does show off her playful side with little, personal touches. In "Winter Wonderland" she promises to "frolic and play the Canadian way", which should draw smiles from her native land. Elsewhere, she ends "Jingle Bells" with the girlishly giddy statement, "I'm just crazy about horses". Well…can't argue with that. -Leah Weathersby.

Review Platinum Christmas / Various Artists:

With a fairly even mix of pure pop and R&B, Platinum Christmas should be on every chart fan's wish list for the festive season. On the pop front, Britney Spears ("My Only Wish (This Year)"), S-Club 7 ("Perfect Christmas"), Backstreet Boys ("Christmas Time") and N-Sync ("I Don't Wanna Spend One More Christmas Without You") keep the seasonal goodwill at an all-time high with plenty of sleigh bells and winter warmers, only to be let down by Steps with an appalling cover version of one of the all-time greatest Christmas songs ever, Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody", which they desecrate with vocoders, plinky-plonky synths and some of the weakest vocals ever committed to disc. On the R&B front, things fare a bit better with Monica ("Grown up Christmas List"), R. Kelly ("World Christmas"), Whitney Houston ("Who Would Imagine A King") and TLC's startling, yet strangely compelling, reworking of Phil Spector's classic "Sleigh Ride". With the exception of TLC, the cover versions tend to be the less compelling tracks, with the original material proving a far fresher take on the Christmas theme. As for Steps-they'd obviously been at the sherry. -Mel Roberts.

Review The McGarrigle Christmas Hour / Kate and Anna McGarrigle:

Kate and Anna McGarrgile have a storied recording career that spans a slate of five-star albums that includes original music and songs from the French Canadian world, American ragtime and other "old world" genres. They would appear to be quaint to most ears if they weren't so damn good at blending the past and their modern sensibilities in memorable verse and song. Enter their Christmas record into that same framework, as the sisters and a few friends (Emmylou Harris) and family members (Rufus and Martha Wainwright are the children of Kate)mix up the old and new. The French song "Il Est Ne" is rounded out with a shimmering round of vocal backing harmonies while Rufus' "Spotlight on Christmas" (penned a couple years ago) and his wonderfully fey reading of "What Are Your Doing Christmas Eve?" prove to be just three highlights of another five-star effort. Although it will be an acquired taste to some, the McGarrigle Christmas Hour is like spending quality time in Kate and Anna's parlor. There the piano, fiddles, other instruments and friendly voices are ready to satisfy with old world charm that could never be mistaken for old school insignificance. -Martin Keller.

Review The Christmas Album Vol.1 / Neil Diamond:

Neil Diamond has always fancied himself a man of many styles, which probably helps explain why he tries to flaunt each and every one of them on this diverse, sometimes dizzying Christmas disc. He plays it relatively straight on "Silent Night" and "The Christmas Song," but really lets loose on a version of "White Christmas" that recalls the doo-wop of his teen years in the 1950s. Diamond even expands his palette to include a choir-accompanied take on John Lennon's pacifist classic "Happy Christmas (War is Over). " It's the kind of intermingling that makes his fans go wild, but casual admirers should watch out for those stylistic U-turns. -David Sprague.

Review Andrea Bocelli - A Night In Tuscany [1997] / Universal Island:

Part concert, part documentary, part travelogue, this video hit duplicates the success of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's albums and underscores his unique crossover appeal. Critical response to Bocelli has been confined to fusillades of scorn from classical and opera writers, but the bullet-proof superstar is better understood in the context of a mainland European tradition of pop-classical fusion. Bocelli cheerfully ignores the supposed wall between high (classical) art and low (pop) kitsch with his mix of operatic chestnuts, soft pop and traditional Italian songs. Indeed, despite interview segments in which he proclaims his love of opera or proudly recalls an apprenticeship to operatic veteran Franco Corelli, Bocelli comes across as more fan than virtuoso. But if his voice can prompt technical cavils from hard-core opera buffs, the blind singer's emotional directness and relative lack of onstage preening explain much of his populist appeal. Featured songs include warhorse arias, leading off with the "Louie, Louie" of tenor showpieces, Turandot's "Nessun Dorma" and duets with gruff Italian pop-rocker Zucchero and sopranos Nuccia Focile and Sarah Brightman (who buddies up for the tear-jerking closer, "Time to Say Goodbye"). Even with the marquee bonus of those guests, however, A Night in Tuscany gets its biggest boost from the seductive Italian countryside, prominently featured in between-song segments, and in the romantic concert setting, Pisa's Piazza dei Cavalieri. -Sam Sutherland.
