Review Bach: Christmas Oratorio / Erato:Like that of the Easter and Ascension oratorios, the music of the Christmas Oratorio was compiled mainly from Bach's secular cantatas. That said, individual texts and scores were also considerably reworked for the composer to come up with a densely argued and pristinely shaped structure which assumes the form of a six-part arch, taking the Nativity story from Birth, via Annunciation, Adoration, Circumcision and Naming to the Coming of the Magi and their eventual climactic Adoration. Reciprocally well argued and formed is Tom Koopman's fastidious reading with his own well-drilled Baroque Orchestra and Choir. From a festive and rustic opening onwards-trumpets and timpani bristling with energy and attack-Koopman rightly treats the oratorio as a journey of discovery. And what lavish treats lie in store along the way, not in the least the immaculate contributions of all four vocal soloists, especially the velvety alto of Elisabeth von Magnus and the rich bass of Klaus Mertens. Propulsive tempi assist in keeping both the drama and the momentum going, and there's some sharp split-second editing to ensure that recitatives, arias and choruses really flow. Add the pristine playing of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, plus fine recording balance between them, soloists and choir for a thrilling and first-rate rendition. -Duncan Hadfield.

Review Christmas Carol: The Movie / Various:All the emotions and feelings associated with Christmas-hope, joy, excitement, peace, mystery and wonder, as well as a little melancholy-are explored on the soundtrack to the 2001 animated film Christmas Carol: The Movie. Based on Charles Dickens' novel, the film features the voices of actors including Nicolas Cage, Simon Callow, Rhys Ifans and Jane Horrocks, as well as Kate Winslet, who contributes to the soundtrack with the moving ballad "What If". Two other songs are performed by Charlotte Church as are a host of Christmas carols from the Tiffin Choir. These include favourites such as, "Deck the Hall", "The Coventry Carol" and "The Holly and the Ivy", as well as pieces which deserve to be performed more often, like Peter Cornelius's "Three Kings" and childhood favourite "Cradle Lullaby". This soundtrack is bound to warm even Scrooge's heart. -Rebecca Agnew.

Review Christmas Album [Us Import] / Michael Crawford:Backed by lush orchestration and a choir of quite formal carolers, Michael Crawford's A Christmas Album plays as an elegant concert rather than a random collection of seasonal ditties. An entertainment embracing the good news of Christ's birth, A Christmas Album is thankfully not something we'll hear booming all over town as we shop till we drop. Instead, this is precisely the type of recording one might enjoy at home with family while making an advent wreath or preparing holiday goodies to be shared with loved ones. Crawford's rich theatricality and classical arrangements invoke a joyful sense of spirit in readiness for the Holy babe who came to light the world. There is comfort here. Following ritual and tradition in this timeless mode of celebration, one is both warmed and delivered by the heralding tones of Crawford and his army of singing angels. -Paige La Grone.

Review The Christmas Jazz Album / Various Artists:Compilations on non-musical themes might seem like oddities in a world full of collections by artist and idiom, but they have the advantage of throwing up some unusual juxtapositions. As well as warming the seasonal cockles, The Christmas Jazz Album is a little catalogue of jazz style, bringing together mellifluous, fireside jazz in Tony Bennett's "Chestnuts Roasting", smooth jazz in Grover Washington's "Merry Little Christmas", lush vocal harmony in the Manhattans' "Santa Claus", sprightly solo stride piano in Marcus Roberts's "Winter Wonderland" and Christmassy jazz baroque in Grover's "Jesu". Anyone with a weakness for the Christmas spirit ought to find themselves glowing with rosy benevolence after a few minutes in this company. Meanwhile, the resolutely grumpy jazzer who can't wait for it all to end should find happy refuge in the such timeless jazz making as Wynton Marsalis's big band reading of "Let It Snow!" and Terence Blanchard's cool, Milesian treatment of "Christmas Time Is Here". -Mark Gilbert.

Review A Christmas Album / Amy Grant:Amy Grant's first Christmas album is not only one of the best recordings of her career, it's easily one of the best contemporary Christmas collections available. Grant's Christian beliefs have been incorporated into her music for years, and maybe it's the artistic translation of the depth of her faith that makes these songs so inspiring. "Emmanuel" and "Angels We Have Heard on High" have Grant's vocals soaring, especially on the sustained chorus of the latter. Her country roots show nicely in "Tennessee Christmas," while "Sleigh Ride" is as fun as it is romantic. "Heirlooms" is particularly poignant-maybe not to the point of "hand me a tissue," but it's powerful all the same. A must for fans, and a good holiday addition for those looking for a Christmas record that comes without the cobwebs. -Steve Gdula While many recording artists secular and religious leave their normal musical style on record store shelves when setting out to record a Christmas album, Amy Grant stays true to herself and her listeners. Since Amy swept up Grammy and Dove Awards this year her fans have eagerly awaited her next release. Although a season LP, A Christmas Album (Myrrh) offers completely new material for Amy. From the instrumentation to the backup vocals, Brown Bannister's production on A Christmas Album is tight. [+]
Amy's vocals are lively and full of "umph. " Side one opens with the countrified ballad "Tennessee Christmas," written by Amy and husband Gary Chapman. Later, a three-song extravaganza follows a well-harmonized version of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. " First comes "Preiset Dem Koing! (Praise to the King), a hopping keyboard instrumental written by Shane Keister. Following that, Michael W. Smiths "Emmanuel" stunningly begins with eight synthesized bass beats, building up to the rock chorus based on Isaiah 9:6. The beat then segues to a new innovative rock version of "Little Town. "Side two contains fresh renditions of "Sleigh Ride" and "The Christmas Song. " Amy, Smith, and Keister share the credit on the uptempo pop tune "Love Has Come. " The entire project flows from one song to another, making an inspiring seasonal disc. Now this is a Christmas album! - Vicki Sterud (c) 1983 CCM Communications, Inc.
