Review Christmas Hits: 50 Festive Favourites / Various Artists:The first disc of Christmas Hits is dominated by songs from the 70s and early 80s-the golden era of the mobile DJ and Christmas number ones, when people sang about "Father Christmas" or "snow" and couples tenderly proclaimed their love by calling each other "scumbag" or "maggot". And there are plenty of pop songs here that although not ostensibly about Christmas, are certainly in the spirit of things. Just listen to "The Power of Love" (Frankie Goes To Hollywood's poignant last single) or E17's "Stay Another Day" and try not to weep openly through Robson & Gerome's "I Believe", no really, try. Disc two is more laid back, with classics from Bing Crosby, Elvis and Tony Bennett mingled with some soulful covers of traditional songs like "Silent Night" and modern classics such as "Last Christmas" and "Walking in the Air". Unfortunately, both of the latter are tortured by Human Nature and Declan Galbraith respectively, and its here that the compilation starts to fall apart. Some of the covers are interesting, but often they highlight just how much better the originals were. There have been plenty of great versions of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", not to mention the original so why do we get Michael Bolton? The inclusion of Eva Cassidy's "Over the Rainbow" is also a little confusing. It's poignant sure, but since when has it been associated with Christmas? Still, there's plenty here to keep you amused until its time to put the baubles and tinsel back in the loft. -Jenny Winwood.

Review Andrea Bocelli - A Night In Tuscany [1997] / Universal Island:Part concert, part documentary, part travelogue, this video hit duplicates the success of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's albums and underscores his unique crossover appeal. Critical response to Bocelli has been confined to fusillades of scorn from classical and opera writers, but the bullet-proof superstar is better understood in the context of a mainland European tradition of pop-classical fusion. Bocelli cheerfully ignores the supposed wall between high (classical) art and low (pop) kitsch with his mix of operatic chestnuts, soft pop and traditional Italian songs. Indeed, despite interview segments in which he proclaims his love of opera or proudly recalls an apprenticeship to operatic veteran Franco Corelli, Bocelli comes across as more fan than virtuoso. But if his voice can prompt technical cavils from hard-core opera buffs, the blind singer's emotional directness and relative lack of onstage preening explain much of his populist appeal. Featured songs include warhorse arias, leading off with the "Louie, Louie" of tenor showpieces, Turandot's "Nessun Dorma" and duets with gruff Italian pop-rocker Zucchero and sopranos Nuccia Focile and Sarah Brightman (who buddies up for the tear-jerking closer, "Time to Say Goodbye"). Even with the marquee bonus of those guests, however, A Night in Tuscany gets its biggest boost from the seductive Italian countryside, prominently featured in between-song segments, and in the romantic concert setting, Pisa's Piazza dei Cavalieri. -Sam Sutherland.

Review Various: Russell Walton - Reprise / Universal Classics:On Reprise, his third album, Russell Watson continues to bring together classical pieces with light songs-have Bizet and "Bohemian Rhapsody" ever shared a disc before? Probably not, and with good reason-it's rather unsettling to hear Leoncavallo's devestating "Vesti la giubba" (from Pagliacci) tagged on after a dreary rendition of the aforementioned Queen hit. He may have been dubbed "the people's tenor", but Watson is at his best-and most comfortable-at the lighter end of the repertory. He sings the lilting "That's Amore" with charm and humour, a smooth performance which compares to Robbie Williams on Swing When You're Winning. Nicholas Dodd's swooning orchestrations give Reprise a grandiose feel. Sadly, Watson's voice cannot match their intensity; his version of the famous duet from The Pearl Fishers (yes, he sings both parts) sounds strangled and his performance of "Core 'ngrato" is distinctly unmemorable. Watson is credited as Reprise's producer. If he maintains that role on album number four, he should concentrate on the light songs and ballads, which he performs so well, in this instance not just "That's Amore" but also "The Living Years", "I don't know how I got by" and "The best that love can be". -Rebecca Agnew.
