Review Dreamtime Return / Steve Roach:

This 1988 masterpiece, inspired by Roach's visits to the Australian outback and his work with didgeridoo master David Hudson, set the template for much of Roach's future work. In some sense he has simply refined the album's organic blend of brush-stroke synthesizer colors and ethnic-inspired rhythms ever since, with many glorious results. But this journey into Australian aboriginal mythology-the Dreamtime was an Eden-like period of natural harmony presaged by the arrival of extraterrestrial ancestors-remains a trademark and a wholly original work. Like Bruce Chatwin's seminal book on aboriginal mythos, The Songlines, Return is an outsider's document that feels like the very lay of the land itself; the piece "Songline," with its driving dumbek rhythms, reflects the rocky terrain as ably as "A Circular Ceremony" evokes the vastness and mystery of the desert expanse. A true classic. -James Rotondi EN.

Review Zoomer / Schneider TM:

With giddy tunes and electronic whirligigs, Schneider TM's Zoomer blips and beeps its way into your brain, causing the same hyper-happy effect on adults that sugary cereal has on a nine-year-old. While 1998's Moist and the 2000 EP Binokular helped define blip-pop, Zoomer is yet more accessible, even introducing some hip-hop into Schneider's digital confections. Tracks like "Reality Check" and "Cuba TM" would be Britney-style pop songs in a world run by robots, but there's no mistaking the carbon-based hooks and melodies. Even mini-symphonies like "Hunger" depend on good old songcraft for their addictive effects, despite the layers of ultra-light, mechanical glee. Schneider TM's sound won't appeal to those looking for beats, and it isn't quite out there enough for the experimental future crowd looking for the next Oval or Mouse on Mars. However, if you like Tortoise despite their overt pretension and adore Stereolab when they aren't wandering aimlessly, Zoomer is worth a listen. -Matthew Cooke.

Review Low Kick and Hard Bop / Solex:

Low Kick And Hard Bop is possibly Dutch vinyl mistress Solex's most accomplished album to date. Like her previous volumes of found-sound hysteria, Solex has pillaged the recesses of the bargain bins in her Amsterdam record shop with typically fun results that defy categorisation. Solex can dabble in such diverse and bewildering realms as Hawaiian tiki, the game show Wheel of Fortune, and erm, "noisy deaf people", and still manage to find an accessible middle ground. Tunes with brilliantly weird titles such as "Honey (Amsterdam is Not LA)" and "Ease Up You Fundamentalist!" would sit comfortably alongside Beck, the Avalanches, Señor Coconut, or even the Chemical Brothers, while bluesier moments such as the title track wouldn't be that much out of place next to the White Stripes. Of course, all are punctuated with her excellently hyperactive stream-of-consciousness lyrics. We can't exactly pretend that the idea of bargain-bin archaeology is a new one, but Solex's vinyl experiments are unique and cohesive rather than cut-and-paste. She consistently treads the line between fun and kitsch and manages to stick to the right side of both. In short, this is brilliant. -Leslie Gilotti.

Review Bow Down to the Exit Sign / David Holmes:

David Holmes has always been pretty eclectic in his musical outlook. Starting life as a Northern Irish punk, his 12-year musical journey has seen him release nosebleed techno, off-kilter breaks and dubbed-out hip-hop. Famously, he's also written the soundtrack to a major Hollywood blockbuster (1998's "Out Of Sight"). With his third studio album, he's decided to change tack again, charging off in a darker, dirtier direction. Bow Down To The Exit Sign is a soundtrack. Holmes does his best to distort and disturb, fusing fuzzy funk, low-slung blues and organ-drenched psychedelia. There are a couple of twisted punk-rock numbers featuring Jon Spencer (of Blues Explosion) and Bobby Gillespie (of Primal Scream), and a soundtrack piece written with Bond composer David Arnold. If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, Tricky's former vocal foil, Martina sings a couple of tracks and beat poet Carl Hancock Rux adds harrowing narration to Holmes's intense hallucinogenic vision. Bow Down To The Exit Sign may be dark and disturbed, but it's also one of the most compelling albums in recent years. -Matt Anniss.

Review Metalheadz Platinum Breakz Vol.1 / Various Artists:

Welcome to the dark side. Goldie's label and Grooverider's club of the same family have earned the reputation of housing drum & bass's finest hardcore talents, and Platinum Breakz is an appetizing taster plate for those who like their beats and sounds forbodingly apocalyptic. This two-disc set includes late-night urban soundtracks from Photek, Dillinja, Lemon D, and J Magik as well as some hauntingly poignant vocal work. But the prize moments here belong to Doc Scott, who envelops the ears with waves of futuristic hardcore, and Source Direct, who drop the blackness about as deep, dark, and solid as drum & bass can get. Bristling as it does with cold technology and brutal breakbeats, Platinum Breakz is a perfect soundtrack for the millennial culture. -Steffan Chirazi.

Review All Back To The Mine / Moloko:

Most remix albums smack of weak marketing. Less about the music itself, they're often more concerned with fulfilling contractual obligations. Sadly All Back To The Mine is not an exception to the rule and represents an unnecessary pillage through Moloko's patchy back catalogue. Culled from five years' worth of archive, what you actually get are 21 mixes (10 of which have never appeared on any commercial UK format) of varying quality and style. Not all of them are worthless: there's a great, rubberised funk version of early single "Day For Night" replete with the kind of walking bassline and vocodered vocals that sounds amazingly contemporary; Swag's twitchy electro mix of "The Flipside" is cute and the glossy strings and bottom-end rumble of "Knee Deepen" work just fine. However, there's too much here that's simply dated, hollow or plain uninspiring. Of the three versions of "Time is Now", none tops the original's acoustic punch and nobody (unsurprisingly) makes a silk purse from the sow's ear that is "Indigo". Not a disaster but one for die-hard fans only. -Paul Tierney.

Review Production / Mirwais:

"Disco Science", his toweringly provocative debut single, demonstrated that Parisian producer, Mirwais' disco roots are evident but also distorted and twisted out of all recognition by wild pitch-shifting and taste for acid bassline. Production only emphasises this by taking some of the most popular sounds from late Seventies and early 80s dance floors-Moroder beats, vocoders, analogue synth sounds- and wilfully hammering them into fresh shapes on numbers such as "Naive Song" and "Junkie's Prayer". Mirwais' skills brought him to the attention of Madonna who sequestered them for her album, and returns the favour with this album's centrepiece number, "Paradise Not For Me". This exquisite blend of French monologue and treated English vocal married to swelling synths indicates why Mirwais was seen as the hottest, most chic French electronic producer from an apparently endless line of talent that continues to emanate from the city. Elsewhere Mirwais offers a nod to his compatriots on "I Can't Wait" which matches a pulverising stop start Daft Punk rhythm to buzz saw bleeps and also New York on "Definitive Beat", a juddering breakbeat layered with skidding turntable scratches. A devastatingly original album from a true pioneer. -Mike Pattenden.

Review Kiss House Nation 2001: Mixed By Alex P & Brandon Block / Alex P:

With Ibizan party monsters Alex P and Brandon Block at the helm, Kiss House Nation 2001 would be hard pushed to fail in the floorfiller stakes. With 38 tracks spread over two CDs, there is plenty on offer for all-from full-on party house anthems such as Modjo's "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)", Bob Sinclar's "I Feel For You" and Timo Maas' storming and squelchy remix of Azzido Da Bass' "Doom's Night", to garage scene stalwarts Craig David ("Fill Me In"), Artful Dodger (accompanied by Romina Johnson on "Movin' Too Fast") and Wookie ("Get Enuff"), along with a couple of unusual but extremely good reworkings of pop hits from Samantha Mumba (Tall Paul's Vocal Mix of "Body To Body") and U2 (Quincey and Sonance's Mix of "Beautiful Day"). It's a relentless beast of a dance mix CD, with very few down-tempo numbers to give any respite from the repetitive beats. This much fun ought to be illegal. -Helen Marquis.
