Review A Shocking Hobby / Speedy J:What do you get if you fuse the speaker-shredding violence of Alec Empire to the lava-lamp ambience of The Orb? A Shocking Hobby, that's what. Speedy J is the pseudonym of Rotterdam-based psycho-ambient producer Jochem Paap, and he's been making convoluted, intelligent, and ever so slightly unhinged techno since the early 1990s. Hardly the hobby that the title suggests, then-but this is by no means your typical dance music by numbers day job, either. A Shocking Hobby approaches the creation of chill ambience from a similarly brutal perspective as Plastikman or the Aphex Twin. While the Twin's results are strictly hit-or-miss, though, Speedy J clearly understands that there's some merit in crafting a consistent album. The beauty of A Shocking Hobby is in the way that it reconciles its disparate styles-see "Ferber Mudd", where Paap mashes together incandescent walls of ambience with twisted, off-beat techno rhythms, or "Manhasset" where highbrow orchestral sounds slowly segue into a sinister, primordial fuzz. -Louis Pattison.

Review Tiny Reminders / Two Lone Swordsmen:The Two Lone Swordsmen, Andrew Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood may be long-acquainted partners in the field of techno innovation, (before Two Lone Swordsmen, they worked together throughout the mid-1990s as part of seedy post-acid house rogues Sabres Of Paradise) but they've never fallen into the po-faced techno-trap of over-intellectualising their music. You didn't need a degree to enjoy previous album Stay Down-a work that joyfully explored the boundless territory of the burble, the parp and the squelch-and happily, while this, their third album offers a change in direction, it's one that delves into the endless possibilities of the buzz, the fizz, and the bleep in typically idiot savant style. "Tiny Reminders" is a driving seventy-three minute journey into the depths of electro-minimalism, peppered throughout with very characteristic bursts of the Swordsmen's deadpan humour - see the Aphex Twin-esque gastric rumble of "Rotting Hill Carnival" and the valium-addled steel drum workout of "It's Not The Worst I've Looked. Review Love Philtre Magick / Akasha:Since emerging as one of the most innovative signings to the Wall Of Sound stable in the mid 1990s, Damian Hand and Charlie Casey have kept a low profile. In the space between Love Philtre Magick and their debut Cinematique in 1999, Hand took up playing flute with a travelling circus and Casey has collaborated with the likes of DJ Assassin. Their return is a peculiar album. Echoing the mayhem of Hawkwind, the coffee-table groove of Air and even the heaving keyboard-led rock of the Doors, it's immediately entrancing, often funky and occasionally plain bizarre. The 11-minute psychedelic stomp "21st Century Boy" kicks-off proceedings with a looped bassline, bamboo flute, electric guitar and Nordic synth swirling and gathering pace before taking an ambient break and building upon a gorgeous Fender Rhodes groove only to drift off with a bird song. Elsewhere Casey's vocals resemble the brooding baritone crooning of Nick Cave and "Mugwamp Mondo", a twisted ode to a snake-charming girl Hand met at the circus, exposes a flare for descriptive lyricism: "She did a sleazorama Tijuana rattlesnake dance / She put the whole damn freakshow in a zombified trance. " With their music having a similar effect, Akasha's long awaited sophomore album is fuelled by freaky funk, furnished with acid-tinged jazz and on a heady trip into aural oblivion that's just too crazy too miss. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Cybotron / Dillinja:Cloaked in the guise of Cybotron (one of many aliases), drum and bass assassin Dillinja's debut album opens impressively with Shaolin-sized strings set against an ominous declamatory voice-over before launching straight into the compressed beats and bone-smashing bass of his trademark "Valve Sound". But the record quickly falls foul of the banal soul-stylings from a brace of female singers on tracks such as "Nasty Ways", "What's The Deal" and "Funky Flow" which only detract from the Dillinja's devastating funk dynamics. And the answer-phone interludes from drum and bass notables between tracks are an irritating distraction. But once it gets its groove on again there's little amiss. The MC Fats-featuring "I Told You How To Rock" uses bass as a battering ram for dancefloor domination. "Human B Bop" pitches Dillinja's own burbling be-bop accapella against honky-tonk piano and an urgent rhythm. On "Never", the only vocal track that really cuts it, Cybotron's cyborg worldview is given flesh and blood feeling by Lorreia Loushy's siren-like vocal against chilling staccato strings. Steel drums tap out an apocalyptic clarion call on the fearsome squall of "All Aboard". When the visceral cacophony takes control, dispelling the ghastly apparition of plastic soul, listening to Cybotron is an awe-inspiring experience. -Chris Campion.
