Review Seeking Pleasure / Aloof:The Aloof's third album saw them sink still deeper into despondency, as titles such as "Lies", "Wasting Away" and "Alone" attest. Singer Ricky Barrow is less to the fore in an album punctuated by subdued instrumentals like "Morning Spangle". When he does appear, as on "What I Miss The Most", the album exceeds even "One Night Stand" in its epic melancholia. Seeking Pleasure shifts stylistically to some hitherto unoccupied terrain between The Cure and DJ Shadow, a sort of high techno-goth underscored with huge bass riffs, frantic drums and dark cloudbanks of synth. The album title and songs like "I Find Fun" depict hedonism as a desperate pastime, filling a void. Such despair was uncommon in 1990s dance music. -David Stubbs.

Review Debut / Björk:Her first album following the breakup of the Sugarcubes, Debut is Icelandic trickster Björk's statement of purpose: bringing curious experimentalism to the dance floor and putting her startling, expressive voice front and centre. Her perspective is a little alien-it's no accident that the first song talks about "getting close to a human"-but her levelling of genre distinctions has some wonderful results, especially the eroticised easy-listening reggae sway of "Venus As a Boy". Paired with producer Nellee Hooper (of Soul II Soul), she comes up with a series of invitingly artificial settings for her pipes, built from late-night beats and peculiar timbres and sings like she's overwhelmed with joy from all her senses. -Douglas Wolk.

Review Playgroup / Playgroup:He's remixed U2 and Massive Attack, designed sleeves for Eric B & Rakim and the Jungle Brothers, runs his own record imprint Output and now, under his nom de plume Playgroup, Trevor Jackson has made a classic record that pulls the disco rug from under Daft Punk's feet, without resorting to robot masks, irony, or really terrible guitar solos. Actually, in truth, Playgroup is a record that makes a spirit of eclecticism its central tenet, mashing funk, punk, hip-hop and new-wave into a funky whole, with guests including everyone from bequiffed Scottish crooner Edwin Collins and Happy Mondays' Rowetta to Le Tigre's Kathleen Hanna and Blurt saxophonist Ted Milton. But throughout, the mood is joyfully upbeat and permanently angled towards the dance floor-from the characteristically Princely sleaze-funk of "Number One", sung by Leila cohort Luca, to the odd wildcard, such as the dominatrix disco of "Make It Happen" or the deep boombox-dub rumble of "Surface to Air", peppered cheekily with mobile phone interference. Jackson can even make Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Love" sound cool, reworking it with juddering dancehall bass, Jamaican toaster Shinehead at the helm. Review A Special Album / Ralph Myerz:Norway's Ralph Myerz follows up his last buzz-heavy EP with the full-length A Special Album-a weightless yet pleasing mix of good-natured cheese and sunny down tempo. With a light trip-hop touch, Myerz draws from artists such as Bent and Gus Gus, while incorporating elements of dub and astral jazz. Some songs have a Martin Denny-esque exotica quality about them, such as "Casino" but the record plays it straight most of the time, infusing mellow electronics with dreamy reverb and throbbing bass tones. Myerz' experiments do occasionally go awry, for example, the retro-funk of "Funky Bizness" goes nowhere. Nevertheless, A Special Album promises great things in the future with its airy, off-kilter sensibilities. -Matthew Cooke.

Review Rendezvous / Jean-Michel Jarre:Just after his live performance in Houston to celebrate NASA's anniversary, Jean-Michel Jarre released Rendez-Vous, an appropriately cosmic-sounding album of glittering synth-pop. It consists of the same music heard at the Houston concert and shows Jarre moving closer to conventional rock territory, though still with his distinct blueprint. The final track, "Last Rendez-Vous: Ron's Piece," was composed by Jarre for astronaut Ron McNair and was intended to be the first musical piece played and recorded in space. McNair's historic duty was cut short, however, by the Challenger shuttle disaster of January 1986. -John Bush, All Music Guide.

Review Buddha Bar Vol.3: Mixed By DJ Ravin / Various Artists:DJ Ravin takes the wheel behind Buddha Bar III, the namesake compilation from Paris' answer to Studio 54. Ravin forgoes the Dinner-Party division that Claude Challe opted for on previous instalments of the series, and instead casts Dream versus Joy on this 2-CD set. Dream, leaning on the traditional (syrupy Greek strings, Japanese bamboo flutes, Persian harmonists) and new-age Enigma-Deep Forest side of things (Oliver Shanti and Friends, Vangelis engineer Frederick Rousseau) is frankly too restless to be truly dreamy. The frenzied run-through so many styles, seemingly for the sake of diversity alone, ultimately feels about as sincerely global as a mad dash through Disney's Epcot Centre. The second CD in the set, Joy, pays a tad more attention to a general vibe, resulting in a much better overall effect. Rhythm rules the day here, from tabla-riffic entries by Mercury prizewinner Talvin Singh and fellow Outcastes Badmarsh & Shri to 7-drum troupe Kodo. And don't forget Ekova's "Starlight in Daden". Nothing that features Dierdre Dubois's glorious voice can be all that bad. -Bob Michaels.
