Review Who Can You Trust / Morcheeba:Morcheeba served as the template for subsequent "trip-hop" combos, with a line-up that consisted of brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey (both steeped in a musical heritage ranging from Hendrix to roots reggae, from which they cherry-picked at will) and female vocalist Skye Edwards, whose languid vocals melted into the brothers' melange of slide guitars, scratch DJing dub and tablas like cream into coffee. "Who Can You Trust" didn't immediately win over the dance crowd, moving as it did at Mississippi pace through a marijuana haze of sound. The album's standout tracks, however, including "Tape Loop" and "Trigger Hippie", an almost edible concoction of dark funky ingredients, ensured that it became a slow-burning and widely imitated landmark mid-1990s album. -David Stubbs.

Review Winter Chill, Vol. 2 / Various Artists:Wave farewell to our ever-shortening summer season and concentrate on feeling autumnal for a while instead. You might think the deluge of chill-out comps is finished, but it's not, because the cold season is as good a time to "chill" as any, as compilers extraordinaire Hed Kandi are keen to remind us. It's merely a different kind of relaxation we require now apparently, and their much lauded Winter Chill and Serve Chilled compilations are just the ticket. This latest collection of tracks includes such wintry gems as "Makes Me Feel" by Balearic superstars Afterlife, the impossibly good "Porcelain" by Moby, Bent's glorious "Swollen", "Deliver Me" by The Beloved, "Lebanese Blonde" by Thievery Corporation and "Dive Into You" by futuristic jazz-master Hefner. Review Pomme Fritz / Orb:A downright minimal 40-minute outing from a pioneering English techno duo who on earlier discs required that long to warm up. And with six discrete "pieces," there are more ideas and musical themes here than is the norm with both the band and the genre. Review I Com / Miss Kittin:I COM presents another immensely listenable collection of Miss Kittin's varied musical influences: electro and 80s synth-tinged pop with a side-serving of house. But let's not try to pigeon-hole the creative influences of this talented French superstar DJ and just enjoy the end product. I COM has something for everyone; you could well imagine chic urban types with sharp haircuts grooving along to "Requiem for a Hit" in one of those clubs with concrete bars. The punky and energetic "Meet Sue Be She" is a real gem among the numerous chilled, downbeat tracks such as the beautiful "Happy Violentine" and "Allergic" on which Kittin ditches the straight-talking vocals for a softer melodic sound. But it's not all sweetness and light; her German accent on "Neukolin 2" brings back the dark edge that is so much a part of Kittin and the Hacker's sound. "Soundtrack of Now" is evocative of those endless nights of debauchery in a "VIP area" that is so often mentioned on Kittin tracks, while the title track is a curious whispered discourse about a "new wireless creation of musical technology". As a whole, the album is a real mixed bag of sounds and moods that presents something new each time you listen to it. -Angela Boodoo.

Review Darkdancer / Les Rythmes Digitales:If you're one of those lucky souls blessed with the gift of synesthesia, you may not feel so lucky when listening to this album. What you'll picture in your mind's eye when you hear Darkdancer is the worst music video you've ever seen: feather-haired folks in red leather jackets with a surfeit of diagonal zippers wandering through a landscape of fluorescent geometric shapes. At the climax, everything moves in slow motion. Welcome back to the '80s. Les Rhythmes Digitales, a. k. a. Jacques Lu Cont (an Englishman despite the name), digs that woebegone decade enough to make up for everyone else's lack of enthusiasm. On what is for all intents and purposes his debut, he's aimed his arsenal of vintage analog synths at your nostalgia and pleasure zones. The result is a smooth tour of Eurythmic bass lines, vocoderizations, and a guest appearance from Canadian big-in-the-U. [+]K. '80s singer Nik Kershaw. Considering how gimmicky the conception is, it's a surprisingly amenable listen from start to finish, though only on the astonishing single "Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat)" does he tweak his source material enough to make clear he's capable of keeping some distance from his silliest indulgences. -Jeff Salamon.

Review The Stanton Sessions / Stanton Warriors:In this post-modern age of mix'n'match beats, the boundaries of style and genre have undergone dramatic evolution. The Stanton Sessions is the latest attempt to push the dancefloor envelope just that little bit further, bringing with them a hybrid stew of beefed-up electro, pounding breakbeats and anything else sufficiently deep and streetwise. As producers in their own right, home-grown cuts and remixes feature highly on this rough and ready session, yet when they're as good as the Harold Faltymer-aping "Da Antidote" or their subtle reworking of "Dooms Night", few would care to complain. Add to this a string of relentless break-driven monsters such as Layo & Bushwacka's killer mix of "The Phantom", the acapella mash up of "Can U Feel It" featuring Busta Rhymes, or the pure vocal punch that is T. Power's "Amaziree" and you're left with an album of sterling credentials.
