Review Strange Familiar / Russell Mills:Originally released as Undark in 1996, and then named among the Albums Of The Year by both The Wire and DJ Magazine, Russell Mills' debut now comes remastered and beautifully repackaged by Mills himself in impressionistic 4AD style (unsurprising, given Bella Union is the label of ex-Cocteau Twins Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde). Due to his heavy-duty reputation in the world of multi-media art and sonic exploration, Mills here draws together an absurdly prestigious array of guests, including Guthrie, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, U2's The Edge, Japan's David Sylvian and both Brian and Roger Eno. Each contributes tellingly to mesmerising techno-soundscapes intended to reflect the sweet harmony, churning menace and uncontrollable unruliness of nature (and our unsteady place within it), as well as the way everyday objects and patterns can, when seen from a different perspective, be revealed as unsettlingly odd. Rhythmically complex and (Sylvian excepted) deliberately burying its occasional vocals and guitars in the mix, Strange Familiar is exactly what it claims to be. Moreover, as it draws you in gradually, it's eventually totally overpowering. -Dominic Wills.

Review Oxygene / Jean-Michel Jarre:Jean Michel Jarre, son of film composer Maurice Jarre, is one of the true pioneers of electronic music. Oxygene is one of the original e-music albums. It has withstood the test of time and the evolution of digital electronica. Jarre's compositional style and his rhythmic instincts were his strong points in 1976. While his popularity has escalated exponentially over the years, he never quite achieved the quality of this amazing recording. The innocence and freshness provide most of its charm. Jarre's techniques and ability provide the rest. This epic CD will appeal to fans of Tonto's Expanding HeadBand, Tangerine Dream, Synergy, Kraftwerk, and Klaus Schulze. -Jim Brenholts, All Music Guide.

Review Big Sounds Of The Drag / Junkie XL:Whatever dictionary Holland's Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) uses, there are clearly a few words missing, including subtlety. His second album, picks up the post-Chemical Brothers breakbeat thrash sound of his Saturday Teenage Kicks debut and is another incessant slab of heavy metal dance floor action that's low on craft but very big on high-octane cartoon thrills. Dropping the cheesy samples favoured by his British big beat brethren, Holkenborg instead goes for lost seventies power chords, Wagnerian strings and brain-pummelling breaks. All very Prodigy, all very sub-Moby. And yet there's such an epic pop energy and pretension-free adrenaline-soaked mania to "Zerotonine", "Power Of Big Stacks" and "Legion" that make it hard to resist a fleeting grin and grind. When he turns his twiddles to tranced-out house on "Gettin' Lost" and "Bon Voyage", you can see why Sasha and Carl Cox have been getting their dance floor kicks from this deranged Dutchman. Not clever, but very big. -Calvin Bush.

Review Instinct / Mandalay:The tang of exotica in the name is no accident. After splitting up with former Thieves partner David McAlmont, Saul Freeman teamed up with instrumentalist and vocalist Nicola Hitchcock to form Mandalay, whose music is, if anything, even more luxuriant and romantic. Hitchcock has the vocal range and style of an intelligible Liz Fraser, and it's in The Cocteau Twins' richly coloured impressionism that Mandalay find their nearest ancestor. Instinct, their second album, comes across almost as breathy, electronic chamber music; it's very much in the spirit of the 4AD albums of the 1980s, with the technology updated and the pretensions muted-a little, at least. Despite being lumped in with trip-hop at their inception, Mandalay have survived to create a sound which, although far from unique, has a distinctive quality and clarity. One to accompany the floating candles in the bathtub. -David Bennun.

Review Untilted / Autechre:If proof is needed that one man's tuneless bleeping is another man's electronic masterpiece, exhibit A would surely be Autechre. From the title on down (Untilted-geddit?), this is an album that will have conservative rock fans pulling off their ears, howling at the lack of 'real tunes' contained herein, whereas those with ears more accustomed to off-kilter beats, strange noise and a penchant for finding melody and beauty buried in the near-random soundscapes, will have a field day. The tracks ('songs' doesn't quite seem like a justifiable description) contained on here echo some of Autechre's finest work, both as artists and as remixers. Opener "LCC" melts from its initial metallic percussion loop into a softer, textured ambient mood piece, and the running time is enough to allow the song to complete a gradual shift, without sounding laboured (indeed, most of the tracks on here stretch to nearly 10 minutes, with closing masterpiece "Sublimit" - reminiscent of Tortoise's "Djed" in its multipart Teutonic structure-clocking in at 15). As the album flies by, so do the various sounds, ping-ponging between channels like super-fast flies and adding to the ambience sculpted within. Danceable it ain't, but as a think-piece, it's very effective. -Thom Allott.

Review Never Trust a Hippy / Adrian Sherwood:Sherwood has been a key figure on the margins of the UK dub reggae scene since the days of punk so it's somewhat surprising to hear that Never Trust a Hippy is only his first full-length release. Which isn't to say he hasn't already built up a pretty mean legacy: as the power behind the influential On-U Sound label he's worked as producer for the likes of Primal Scream, Nine Inch Nails and Lee "Scratch" Perry, mashing together dancehall tempos, clanking dub skankiness, rootsy world-music and electronic industrialism under one pioneering banner. Never Trust a Hippy is the logical culmination of one man's quest, a collection of tracks with a very definite grounding in dub's spiritual reverence for echo, delay and heavy bass. Made diverse through a number of contributors that add their own unique spin on the sound, excellent digital dancehall producer Lenky, Indian vocalist Hari Haran, reggae greats Sly & Robbie and Sherwood's young daughters who sing vocals on "The Ignorant Version". Cultures are packed so densely that it comes out sounding virtually rootless, making Never Trust a Hippy sound dizzyingly unique. -Louis Pattison.

Review Richard D. James Album / Aphex Twin:If techno ever does become the sound of young America, don't expect Richard James to be its poster boy, deserving though he may be. A native of Cornwall, England, James is obsessed with the mechanics of music making: As a kid, he took apart and reassembled the living room piano. Under the names Aphex Twin, Polygon Window, AFX, and other aliases too numerous to mention, he showed that he could make entire tracks with the sounds produced by tapping on a Coke can. Like the indie rockers of yore, he revels in his marginality because of the creative freedom it gives him. His full-length U. S. debut, Selected Ambient Works Volume II (1994), includes some of the most serene sounds this side of the Orb, but his favorite hobby is the not-at-all-blissful pastime of driving a Daimler Ferret Mark 3 tank through his parents' backyard. None of his recordings have captured the competing impulses to lull you to sleep and blast out your eardrums as well as Richard D. James, his third and best album. As the title indicates, James has turned inward for inspiration, painting aural pictures of real and imagined scenes from his west country childhood. [+]
"Goongumpas" is a fanciful, playful tune that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. As his adventures with the family upright indicate, James was a bit of a devil even as a child. "Beetles" is the sound of a boy frying bugs on the sidewalk with a magnifying glass, and "To Cure A Weakling Child" shows flashes of the sort of sadism found only on preschool playgrounds. If you still doubt that young Richard developed early on, the romantic Nino Rota-style strings on "Girl/Boy Song" are just made for passionate seductions, and the tune appears in three mixes, each one hot and hornier than the one before. The raucous undercurrents of even his calmest tunes and the sources of many of his most common sounds are what link James to the rock tradition. With Richard D. James, the artist solidifies his position as an electronic music mastermind who has earned a spot beside such well-respected innovators-whether or not he's destined for stardom. Jim Derogatis.

Review Vanguard / Finley Quaye:The urban dub-reggae and super sunny disposition of his debut album, Maverick A Strike-which spawned five singles, including the ultra chilled "Even After All" and his calling card "Sunday Shining" and won him Best Male Solo Artist at the 1998 Brits-made Finley Quaye a house hold name. Due predominately to the fact that Maverick was the perfect summer soundtrack, Finley's success also owes a part debt to the fact that he, his voice and his sound were, at the time, unique. Two years on and very little has changed. Finley still has no competition when it comes to spirit lifting dubpop and his new album has just as many effortlessly cool tunes as its predecessor. Most importantly, Finley still knows how to take the rootsiest grooves and organic beats and turn them into instantly memorable pop tunes. Be it single "Spiritualized", with that other classic Quaye trait, wacky lyrics; "Paint the wall/fix the plugs/gonna fill this room with Persian rugs" and a rock powered guitar groove or the Desmond Decker reggae sway of "Burning", everything on Vanguard is topped with a contagious melody. Not a revelation, then, but a reassurance that Maverick A Strike was no flash in the pan. If anything, Vanguard is just that little bit sunnier. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Orbital / Orbital:In the late 1980s, as American house and techno imports flooded Britain and the Acid House movement was sweeping the nation, brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll were busy building Britain's own interpretation of the sound. Named for the illegal "Orbital" raves taking place around the M25, they dragged their equipment from party to party, playing live PAs of their homegrown dance music to enthusiastic crowds of revellers. Their 1990 single "Chime" was (and still is) the anthem of many a British raver, and their self-titled 1991 debut remains a classic. Opening with the exquisite mid-tempo anthem "Belfast", and containing the "Chime", "Satan", and "Fahrenheit 303" singles, this album captures the innocence and energy of the nascent rave scene. -Matthew Corwine.
