Review Untilted / Autechre:

If proof is needed that one man's tuneless bleeping is another man's electronic masterpiece, exhibit A would surely be Autechre. From the title on down (Untilted-geddit?), this is an album that will have conservative rock fans pulling off their ears, howling at the lack of 'real tunes' contained herein, whereas those with ears more accustomed to off-kilter beats, strange noise and a penchant for finding melody and beauty buried in the near-random soundscapes, will have a field day. The tracks ('songs' doesn't quite seem like a justifiable description) contained on here echo some of Autechre's finest work, both as artists and as remixers. Opener "LCC" melts from its initial metallic percussion loop into a softer, textured ambient mood piece, and the running time is enough to allow the song to complete a gradual shift, without sounding laboured (indeed, most of the tracks on here stretch to nearly 10 minutes, with closing masterpiece "Sublimit" - reminiscent of Tortoise's "Djed" in its multipart Teutonic structure-clocking in at 15). As the album flies by, so do the various sounds, ping-ponging between channels like super-fast flies and adding to the ambience sculpted within. Danceable it ain't, but as a think-piece, it's very effective. -Thom Allott.

Review Back to Mine - The Voodoo Sessions / Lamb:

Part 18 in the popular downbeat series, Back to Mine: the Voodoo Sessions comes from Lambproducer Andy Barlow. As ever the selection is eclectic and unusual with all manner of styles jostling for space. The appropriately titled "Intro" by Martina Topley-Bird sets the voodoo mood well with her vocals sounding eerily ancient and rich in mysticism, which is the key to the hypnotic songs found here. The chanting world blues of Dr John's "I Walk on Guilded Splinters" maintains the atmosphere as things gently start to pick up with a deep, tribal MAW remix of Nina Simone's "See-Line Woman". The tempo really kicks in for Barlow's own "Sacred Space", world influenced progressive techno inspired by the Glastonbury stones. This pace continues until the closing few tracks, Chris Thomas King's version of "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues" bringing it back to a gentle acoustic level until Damon Albarn's Nabintou Diakite project ends things in a fittingly spiritual manner. Back to Mine: the Voodoo Sessions is another great compilation in the series. The mixing is nothing to make a fuss of but the song selection and running order makes for a good way to spend an hour. -David Trueman.

Review Old Skool Euphoria: Mixed By Altern 8 / Altern 8:

The nostalgia industry grinds onward ever onward, but along the way, it throws up a few real gems. If the reported long-term effects of ecstasy are anything to go by, Old Skool Euphoria should be a barely-reminiscent series of fluffy, disposable dance tunes. Remarkably, though, a decade on, these tunes still sound bright, brash and refreshing as the enormous smily that adorns this album's cover. Old Skool Euphoria spans the broad dance terrain of the early 1990s, from the chart-friendly pop-rave overground to the darker strains of emergent techno, jungle and progressive house, and surprisingly, for a compilation mixed by boiler-suited acid-house commandos Altern-8-an act once mocked as the novelty face of hardcore-it's remarkably gimmick-free. No "Ebeneezer Goode" or "Sesame's Treet" here: instead, ancient rave treasures such as LFO's "LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix)" and Renegade Soundwave's "Phantom" rub up against joyful pop epiphanies such as Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era's "Far Out" and Snap's "Rhythm Is A Dancer". Classics one and all, this is the perfect reminder of a day when dance music was unpretentious and a whole lot of fun. -Louis Pattison.

Review So Tough / Saint Etienne:

This eclectic second disc from the graceful London trio features dub-dance grooves, cafe folk, Rush samples, a Van Dyke Parks arrangement, Eno-meets-rap experiments, and a gentle pop single ("You're In A Bad Way") that could have been sung by Cilla Black in 1965. A puzzle worth solving. -Jeff Bateman.

Review Electro Bamako / Mamani Keita:

Electro Bamako is dead-centre cutting-edge world music, being an eclectic and uncompromising combination of African and Euro-American performing traditions. So you get the African melodies and words, that wonderful rhythmic lilt that the West African states are so adept at, plus the studio production techniques and improvisatory practices of Urban Western man circa 2000. Just reading the musician credits tells it own revealing story about this particular combination of elements: vocals, guitars, balafon, n'goni, cello, piano, saxophone, trumpet, bass and treatments are just a selection of the full line-up. Mamani Keita has a voice and a method of delivery that does justice to her family's status in African music, while Marc Minelli produces convincing musical backdrops for her to perform within. The rhythms are hypnotising, the texture of the music sensuous but beautifully patterned and coloured. The album can be enjoyed on many different listening levels and in equally diverse audio environments, though it's best heard loud. The long and informative booklet notes are all in French, by the way. -Keith Shadwick.

Review Do You Know Squarepusher / Squarepusher:

With a clutch of album releases under his belt and a growing reputation, it seems a little strange that Tom Jenkins still feels obliged to include a lengthy synopsis to his musical standpoint in relation to popular culture (hence Do You Know Squarepusher). Maybe this is the result of a bad review or confused audience feedback, or simply about that time when justification was finally met. Logically it follows that the musical template remains a hallmarked cacophony of splintered beats and fractured sonics that find an aggressive medium of balancing melody in and around contorted backdrops. Lyrically it's a pastiche with "F-Train" coming across as The Streets played off and out by The Anti-Pop Consortium. Not a particularly comfortable thought, but then Squarepusher doesn't necessarily do easy listening. The closest to that comes on the latter half of the album ("Mutilation Colony") where the beats are dropped in favour of soundscaping, that again combines abstract parts (akin to Carlos and Richter) although still finds a path for more conventional or should that be "accessible" pieces too. Rounded off with a passable version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" it's another astute album with a hint of ageing and acceptance. -Found Sounds.

Review Seventh Tree / Goldfrapp:

Seventh Tree unveils an Alison Goldfrapp quite different to the one we saw on her career highpoint to date, 2005's Supernature. Whereas that album was grandiose, glammy, and almost aggressive in its brash, thrusting sexuality, Goldfrapp's fourth album is no less sensual, but rather more subtle in its approach. Recorded with longtime collaborator Will Gregory out in rural Somerset, Seventh Tree feels like an attempt to fuse the pagan folk of cult English horror classic The Wicker Man to a lush backdrop of woozy electronics and a restrained orchestral sweep reminiscent of '70s-era Serge Gainsbourg. In practise, this means much of Seventh Tree goes where earlier Gainsbourg disciples such as Air have gone before: chilled-out, soporific electronica with a light organic edge. Luckily, Goldfrapp remains a compelling enough figure to keep matters on the right side of ethereal: the gorgeous "Clowns" imagines the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser guesting on some long-forgotten Nick Drake out-take, rustic folk with an all-but-indecipherable vocal and an undercurrent of desolation, while "A&E" shows Goldfrapp's pop urge has not deserted her, uplifting electronica with a warm, bucolic twist. -Louis Pattison.

Review Another Late Night - Groove Armada / mixed by) Groove Armada:

Following in the footsteps of Fila Brazilla, Howie B, Rae & Christian and Zero 7, Groove Armada make their contribution to the Another Late Night series. Selecting their favourite downbeat tunes and effortlessly mixing them, the duo un-earth such gems as Tim Love Lee's "Java Jam", "Standing in the Rain" by Don Ray and "Day Dreaming" by Aretha Franklin. Two standouts to look out for are Groove Armada's own exclusive cover version of the standard "Fly Me to the Moon" and their mix of Roy Ayers' "The Memory" with Jeru the Damaja's "Ya Playin' Yaself". -Georgina Collins.

Review Counterfeit Vol.2 / Martin L. Gore:

One thing that Counterfeit proves is that Martin Gore has exemplary taste in music. The Depeche Mode songwriter's first full-length solo excursion is a covers album in the tradition of Bowie's Pin-Ups. The 11 tracks range from obviously classic works by rock lords Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop and John Lennon to a pop trash wild card-a winsome version of David Essex's "Stardust". What's more, most of the songs fit in with Depeche Mode's key themes of masochism, drugs, decay, disillusion and general perviness. The problem lies in Gore's lack of emotional and musical range. Fans will take great comfort in the set's familiar moody minor chords, electronic glitches, echoey darkness and Gore's Dave-Gahan-lite vocals. But the end result is a sameness of texture and tempo and songs as originally powerful as "In My Time of Dying" or Cave's "Loverman" just seem to float into the background, deprived of edge and individuality. Still, Gore plays Weill's "Lost in the Stars" piano-and-strings straight, and seekers of tasteful ambience may enjoy the idea of various cult rock, folk and country songs being transformed into Mode-ish mood music. -Garry Mulholland.

Review Rough Trade Shops - Electronic Vol.1 / Various Artists:

London's Rough Trade store has occupied a central and important role in the arena of worldwide electronic exchange for more than two decades. Their compilations are generally well presented and exquisitely put together, and this latest offering is no exception. Spanning over 50 years of electronic enterprise, this collection positions modern producers such as Aphex Twin ("D. C. D. O. A"), Oval ("Kardamon"), Matmos ("Freak N You") and Schneider TM ("The Light 3000") with early pioneers such as John Cage ("Radio Music") and Pierre Henry ("Atelier"), Krautrockers Can ("I Want More"), 1980s industrialists Throbbing Gristle ("Hot on the Heels of Love"), electronic pop bands such as the Human League ("Being Boiled") and New Order ("586") and a host of other seminal electronicists such as Brian Eno, Raymond Scott, Kraftwerk, Non, Aux 88, To Rococo Rot and Fischerspooner. More than any other compilation, this shows the astonishing and near-impossible breadth and range of electronic music in the 20th-century. A must-have for music and technology enthusiasts alike. -Paul Sullivan.
