Review Medulla [Digipak] / Bjork:Normally, an artist such as Bjork with a mass audience across the globe steadily eases off as the back-catalogue starts to grow. However, Medulla, the fifth proper studio album from Bjork is without a doubt the most challenging collection of music she has ever released. For the most part, the album is made up of layers uponlayers of processed vocal parts arranged in either harmony or dissonance such as "Vokuro" and "Oll Birtan", respectively. Some, such as "Show Me Forgiveness" are simple acapella, the aforementioned sounding like a vocal cut from Debut minus the music. Another echo of Bjork days gone by is "Desired Constellation", a slow trancy pulse underpinning her distinct vocals. "Where is the Line", "Who Is It" and "Triumph of a Heart" are a bit grimier with a semi-urban twist, the latter a fantastically funky beatbox number with an outstanding introduction, the closest moment to a pop song appearing on Medulla. Although traditional instruments and breaks have been removed from this album, Medulla is no great departure for Bjork but in a sense it is radically different from any of her previous work. Some will love it, some hate it, and some just wont be sure what to think. -David Trueman.

Review Another Late Night - Rae & Christian / Rae & Christian:Given the success of their own soul inspired long-players, Rae & Christian are the most obvious contributors so far to compile a home mix tape of preferred late-night listening for the Another Late Night series. Having previously collaborated with the likes of soul legend Bobby Womack, it's little surprise that vintage funk is their main focus. Starting from the imposing horns of Trendsetter's "Heavy Worker", every ghetto strut from sleazy disco (Joshua's "Come On") to Latin boogaloos (Aromadozeski Therapy's "Strudel Strut") via easy down-tempo (Riton's "Put That On My Momma") and hi-tech electro (Mr Scruff's mix of Capoeira Twins "Four") is covered on route to a glorious climax with flamenco guitarist Jose Feliciano's aching cover of the Mamas and the Papas classic "California Dreaming". With so much funk and so many break beats on offer, this third instalment of Another Late Night is as much a gift to disillusioned hip-hop heads as it is dance-floor weary clubbers in search of something stylish to unwind to. Review Singles 90/98 (11 CD's/63 Tracks) / Massive Attack:Though perhaps not as relentlessly stylish as their contemporaries Underworld, Massive Attack are still easily the most influential dance-related act of the 1990s. But on this special, limited-edition boxed set, they've also got style to spare: the box itself is gloriously groovy, constructed from a heat-sensitive material that changes colour whenever somebody handles it. And then there's the music: 11 CDs, comprising 63 tracks that include album versions, B-sides and some of the best remixes around. Though the package could have fit on fewer discs-making for fewer trips to the CD player-there's ample reasons to pull the box off the shelf repeatedly: rediscovering classics like the Bond theme-ish "Sly", the relentlessly funky Brixton bass Mix of "Daydreaming" and the subversive, lustful Underdog's Angel Dust Mix of "Protection" among them. -Randy Silver.

Review The Saint Ost / Original Soundtrack:This '90s update of the classic U. K. television series of the '60s was roundly criticized for its murky, convoluted plotting and quirky performance by Val Kilmer in the title role of Simon Templar. But its soundtrack-a typically market-driven collection of modern pop-is actually one of the better efforts of the '90s. Leaning heavily on electronica influences (Orbital's conservative rendering of Edwin Astley's TV theme, Moby's driving "Oil," The Chemical Brothers' "Setting Sun," and others), The Saint at least holds together as a cohesive musical statement, something many similar collections can't claim.
