Review Ministry of Sound Trance Nation 2 / Various Artists:As trance continues its ascendancy of of the world's club scene, so to rises the chequebook DJ-an unscrupulous type that cobbles together a ropy compilation in order to con those sun-addled punters eager to re-capture that Balearic daze. Thankfully, Trance Nation 2 was pieced together for Ministry Of Sound on the decks of Ferry Corsten, the man behind System F, and at the time of release, one of trance's hottest names. Eager to come on like the definitive article, Trance Nation 2 is plain in its intention and clearly aims to be the be-all, end-all if-you-only-buy-one-trance-compilation, but that's not to cast aspersions on its ruthless appeal. Remember that this stuff only tore the charts to pieces in the first place because it filled so many dancefloors, and there's no room to be sniffy when the likes of Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone", ATB's "Don't Stop" and System F's "Out Of The Blue" are plainly such cast-iron anthems. -Louis Pattison.

Review Echo Dek / Creation Records:Remix albums are tricky things to pull off. Often, the remix compilation is the record label's way of eking the last drops from a commercially successful artist whose popularity is beginning to wane. Of course, this is not always the case. Echo Dek, a total dub overhaul of Primal Scream's excellent Vanishing Point, stands alone as a great album. This is largely thanks to the inspirational decision to employ legendary dub reggae producer Adrian Sherwood as chief remixer. Sherwood pays the originals much respect, yet still stamps his authority on proceedings. The resultant dubs-spacious, bass-heavy, multi-textured creations-are as good as anything Sherwood has done in the last five or 10 years. Tracks like "Kowalski", "Burning Wheel" and "Trainspotting"-which employed dub soundscapes in original form-are taken to the cleaners with great effect. There are a couple of clangers, but overall the result is stunning and at times invigorating. Echo Dek is one of the better remix albums, on a par with Massive Attack's dub remix No Protection. [+]

Review Mezzanine: Limited Edition [VINYL] / Massive Attack:By the release of 1998's Mezzanine, critics were suddenly of the understanding that Massive Attack were one of the most important bands in the world. Bristol's original trip-hop pioneers had, on previous albums Blue Lines and Protection, fused turntable wizardry to the warmest of soul. With Mezzanine, however, the party had ended; revisiting the murky soundscapes so favoured by former partner and fellow Bristolian Tricky, the comeback single "Rising Son" muttering edgily about "cheap beer filled with crocodile tears", over the deepest bass. Tensions were heightened by the news that the making of Mezzanine was riven by inter-band rifts. The friction, though, seems to have create some gems; "Inertia Creeps" is drenched in menace, and "Teardrop" features the ethereal vocals of Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins-both of these a benchmark not just for the band, but for the trip-hop genre. Bleak, but powerfully beautiful. -Louis Pattison.

Review behind the sun / Chicane:Since the release of his debut album, Far From The Maddening Crowds, Chicane's Nick Bracegirdle has been a bit of a busy chap. After tastefully reupholstered the Clannad classic "Theme From Harry's Game" into a melodic-trance masterpiece, he then confounded all expectations by taking rock atheist Bryan Adams to the top of the charts with the friskily euphoric "Don't Give Up". These pop-dance lovelies only paint half the picture though. In between the strident hooks and glacial breakdowns which characterise his Ibizan leanings, Bracegirdle also demonstrates a not-to-be-wasted classical training. The rest of the album pitches moist, velvety pads against ear-tickling flute and a smooth, cocooning ambience. The wistful "Autumn Tactics" glides along like a loved-up Beth Orton-distant guitars chiming over whispered breakbeats, while "Low Sun" taking the baton from A Man Called Adam is like a pure Balearic dawn. All in all, prerequisite summer listening. -Paul Tierney.

Review The Battleship Potemkin / Pet Shop Boys:Although generally happy to hide their more highbrow concerns beneath a postmodernist pop sheen, on Battleship Potemkin, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe let their artistic ambitions run free. Inspired by Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein's desire that his revolutionary 1904 classic of the same name be furnished with a new score every decade to keep it fresh, here Tennant and Lowe have teamed up with the Dresden Sinfoniker orchestra in order to remake the original score with a contemporary flavour. One clue to the sound is through the presence of composer Torsten Rasch, who has formerly reworked the music of German industrial provocateurs Rammstein: the likes of "Nyet" and "Night Falls" share something of that band's deadpan hybrid of Wagnerian doom and pulsing electronics. More familiar to Pet Shop Boys fans will be three vocal originals-"Our Daily Bread", "No Time For Tears" and "After All (The Odessa Staircase)"-that boast lyrics inspired by the original subtitles (although the latter also contains pointed allusions to the Iraq war). Reviews have been mixed, some critics accusing Tennant and Lowe of overpowering the film with a showy, inappropriate score. As a stand-along piece, however, it's a modest success-thematically adventurous, and clever without allowing itself to get bogged down in an ironic morass. -Louis Pattison.

Review Come from Heaven / Alpha:Alpha-Corin Dingley and Andy Jenks-are among the best of the trip-hop generation. Signed to Massive Attack's Melankolic label, their debut owes debts to Scott Walker, Burt Bacharach, and John Martyn, weaving shreds and swatches into something new. Yes, it is downbeat, the kind of music for long, lonely nights, but it is absolutely perfect for those nights. Guest vocalists help out as Dingley and Jenks manipulate the sounds and the strings, fill it all out beautifully. Crafted and inspired, one of '97's standouts. -Chris Nickson.

Review Chilled Out Euphoria: Digitally Mixed By Solar Stone / Various Artists:The term "chill out" has been used intensely to market LPs over the past few years. What it usually indicates is a compilation stuffed full of the downtempo, balearic and leftfield tracks that have been big over the summer. The Euphoria series is a light exception to the rule in that its choice of tracks isn't quite so obvious. Tracks like TallPaul vs INXS "Precious Heart", Chicane's "Overture", Dido's "Take My Hand" and Jakatta's "American Dream" have all appeared on their fair share of compilations over the last few months, but they are joined by more considered choices such as Tangerine Dream's "Love an a Real Train", Talvin Singh's "Disser", Art of Noise's "Moments in Love", Future Sound of London's"Papua New Guinea" and some exclusives from Solar Stone and Push. The album also has the advantage of being mellifluously mixed (digitally, by Solar Stone) so that your relaxed mind state isn't distracted too much by gaps and breaks. Not the most essential listen, but certainly one to get you into the chilled zone without repeating the formula too much. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Nympho / Armand Van Helden:Having found mainstream chart success with his anthem "My My My", Armand Van Helden follows it up with Nympho, a full length album on Norman Cook's Southern Fried label. If the aforementioned hit was your introduction to Armand or you only remember him from "You Don't Know Me", the maniacal screeching of Virgin Killer on the opening title track might come as a surprise. In short, Nympho is a rock/dance crossover with the emphasis on dance music that rocks. For the most part each tune consists of a dark, distorted bassline with guitars and angry vocals, such as "Brainwashing" and the fantastically dark (in spite of its childlike rhyming) "Got Over You". There is respite from the aggressive assault in the shape of 2nd single "Hear My Name" and the grin-inducing terrace anthem "When the Lights Go Down"-both exude the same sing-along poppiness as "My My My", also included here. The nearest comparison to the sound of Nympho would be Deep Dish's "Flashdance" although as ever, Armand's production is rougher, more raw and dirtier that any of his peers. A great album for club kids, maybe not crossover enough for rockers, but if you like crunching guitars in your house and don't mind the odd cowbell, this is definitely the album for you. -David Trueman.

Review Solaris / Photek:It may come as a shock to the purists, but after two albums of pushing abstruse drum & bass to minimalist and epic extremes, the East Anglian producer has thrown a heap of new sounds onto his percussive palate. To some, Solaris is going to sound like a chicken in search of a roost: both "Can't Come Down" and "Mine To Give" are pure 1988 old-school Chicago house. The latter even features that era's legendary vocalist, Robert Owens. "Terminus" and "Junk" pay loose homage to the nu-school breakz template, while "Halogen" and "Lost Blue Heaven" are beautifully poised, damaged electronic torch songs. There's even some drifting ambience too. But what's missing in terms of coherence is more than made up for by the visceral power of Photek's production. Intense, stripped back and wielding more brute force than Leftfield's "Swords", there's a menacing beauty at work here that reinforces Photek's reputation for tingling sonic sculpturing on a grand scale. -Calvin Bush.

Review Production / Mirwais:"Disco Science", his toweringly provocative debut single, demonstrated that Parisian producer, Mirwais' disco roots are evident but also distorted and twisted out of all recognition by wild pitch-shifting and taste for acid bassline. Production only emphasises this by taking some of the most popular sounds from late Seventies and early 80s dance floors-Moroder beats, vocoders, analogue synth sounds- and wilfully hammering them into fresh shapes on numbers such as "Naive Song" and "Junkie's Prayer". Mirwais' skills brought him to the attention of Madonna who sequestered them for her album, and returns the favour with this album's centrepiece number, "Paradise Not For Me". This exquisite blend of French monologue and treated English vocal married to swelling synths indicates why Mirwais was seen as the hottest, most chic French electronic producer from an apparently endless line of talent that continues to emanate from the city. Elsewhere Mirwais offers a nod to his compatriots on "I Can't Wait" which matches a pulverising stop start Daft Punk rhythm to buzz saw bleeps and also New York on "Definitive Beat", a juddering breakbeat layered with skidding turntable scratches. A devastatingly original album from a true pioneer. -Mike Pattenden.

Review Blue Lines [VINYL] / Massive Attack:The critical and commercial triumphs of Portishead, Tricky and Roni Size have established Bristol as a centre of slow-burning creativity, but it was the staggering impact Massive Attack made with their debut album which first put the West Country town on the musical map and made reluctant superstars of Mushroom, 3-D and Daddy G. Blue Lines provided a blueprint for the sound which would become known as trip-hop, combining the raw soundsystem vibe of the Wild Bunch parties with immaculate production and the distinguished vocal talents of Tricky, Shara Nelson and Horace Andy. From the understated beats and deftly-arranged ensemble rapping of the title track to the smokey paranoia of "Five Man Army" and the unrepeatable melancholic splendour of "Unfinished Sympathy", the album is a modern classic through and through. It won the Mercury Music Prize in 1992 and remains the finest work of a frighteningly talented group. -Ed Potton.
