Review Soundphiles / Kinobe:Julius and Blackie's debut longplayer starts off deceptively with the bugging hyperkinetic bounce of "Biological Break" and eases into the arid dark skank of the Benjamin Zephaniah collaboration, Theatricks. Scary stuff. Don't let that put you off however, because Kinobe shine with a more exotic and feel-good sheen elsewhere. Their previous 3 EPs on Pepper were all lush sonic imagings that floated in bluesy and warmer musical waters. After the aforementioned opening confusion, every track on Soundphiles is tailor-made lush soundtrack material-Kinobe never stray too far from the visual ethic. This record is perfect headphone food for daily travels across towns, cities and beyond. The highest points: "Hammock Island" and the Englebert Humplerdinck sampling "Slip Into Something More Comfortable" (with vocals by Ben and Jason) need little explanation as to their chill-out destination. This is the most essential downtempo gem of the summer. I'll have two please. -Dan Stacey.

Review Another Late Night - Rae & Christian / Rae & Christian:Given the success of their own soul inspired long-players, Rae & Christian are the most obvious contributors so far to compile a home mix tape of preferred late-night listening for the Another Late Night series. Having previously collaborated with the likes of soul legend Bobby Womack, it's little surprise that vintage funk is their main focus. Starting from the imposing horns of Trendsetter's "Heavy Worker", every ghetto strut from sleazy disco (Joshua's "Come On") to Latin boogaloos (Aromadozeski Therapy's "Strudel Strut") via easy down-tempo (Riton's "Put That On My Momma") and hi-tech electro (Mr Scruff's mix of Capoeira Twins "Four") is covered on route to a glorious climax with flamenco guitarist Jose Feliciano's aching cover of the Mamas and the Papas classic "California Dreaming". With so much funk and so many break beats on offer, this third instalment of Another Late Night is as much a gift to disillusioned hip-hop heads as it is dance-floor weary clubbers in search of something stylish to unwind to. Low slung and wilfully eclectic, it's also every inch a Rae & Christian album. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Charango / Morcheeba:It's no surprise that Morcheeba's fourth album Charango has been given a summer release to catch the chillout boom. Since bursting into the charts and national consciousness with 1998's sophomore album Big Calm, the trio have carved a veritable niche as purveyors of evocative nuevo-lounge and dreamy ambience. While 2000's Fragments Of Freedom saw the South Londoners' first tentative step out of the "coffee table" pigeonhole, Charango is the sound of them relaxing, infusing influences such as hip-hop, country and cinematic scores into a joyous blend of humour, romance and soothing melancholy. There are vintage moments such as the lush lethargy of "Slow Down" and the string-laden single "Otherwise" but some of the most interesting tracks are the result of collaborations. Having written "What New York Couples Fight About" and "Undress Me Now", Lambchop frontman Kurt Wagner lends his achingly-emotive vocal to the former, while providing Skye with some charming lyrical raunch on the latter; "Using Your Mind / Imagine Our Skin / Joined At The Hip / Joined From Within". "Women Lose Weight" meanwhile is far less romantic; featuring rapper Slick Rick's dulcet tones, it's a tongue-in-cheek tale of a husband driven to murder by his overweight wife. Recorded soon after Rick was released from prison for shooting his cousin, it's of dubious taste if nonetheless entertaining. Adventurous and inspired yet dripping with Morcheeba's trademark languid rhythms and tranquil melodies, Charango is at the very least a return to form and arguably their best work to date. -Christopher Barrett.

Review Singles 90/98 (11 CD's/63 Tracks) / Massive Attack:Though perhaps not as relentlessly stylish as their contemporaries Underworld, Massive Attack are still easily the most influential dance-related act of the 1990s. But on this special, limited-edition boxed set, they've also got style to spare: the box itself is gloriously groovy, constructed from a heat-sensitive material that changes colour whenever somebody handles it. And then there's the music: 11 CDs, comprising 63 tracks that include album versions, B-sides and some of the best remixes around. Though the package could have fit on fewer discs-making for fewer trips to the CD player-there's ample reasons to pull the box off the shelf repeatedly: rediscovering classics like the Bond theme-ish "Sly", the relentlessly funky Brixton bass Mix of "Daydreaming" and the subversive, lustful Underdog's Angel Dust Mix of "Protection" among them. -Randy Silver.

Review Abductions and Reconstructions / Thievery Corporation:It's fitting that Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, the duo behind Thievery Corporation, run both a club and a label that have the name Eighteenth Street Lounge: all of the music (which shares the same dubby, acid-jazz flavour) on the label is perfectly suited to the club. Abductions and Reconstructions, however, is different from previous ESL releases, such as Dubbed Out in D. C. , in that it's easily the label's most accessible album to date. It consists of 15 Thievery remixes of artists from Stereolab to David Byrne to Baba Maal and tends to be a lot more active than the duo's original compositions. Still, the tracks here bear only a passing resemblance to their original forms-in Thievery's hands, the songs are drawn out, tranced up, mellowed down, but each has its own flavour. The end result is an album that's both diverse and consistent and completely enjoyable. You could just as easily dance to these tracks as sit and lounge to them-the perfect soundtrack for either a great bar or your next party. -Randy Silver.

Review Reeled and Skinned: the Snapper, Swank & Hot Flush Eps / Red Snapper:Critics, bless them, didn't quite know what to make of Red Snapper. Were they jazz? (They kept playing at the legendary London jazz club Ronnie Scott's. ) Electronica? Trip-hop? Of course, this very contrariness was the band's great strength, lending their music a fractious, busy quality that set them apart from the vast majority of their peers. The aim was simple enough: to achieve the mesmeric textures of loops and mixes, through a clash of live and electronic instrumentation-the former including such comparative oddities as saxophone, clarinet and double bass. Mostly it worked, and the result was sublime. Prince Blimey was their first album (Reeled And Skinned is a collection of their first three singles and EPs), and the sound is often reminiscent of a late 1960s British gangster flick-an impression reinforced by titles like "3 Strikes And You're Out" and "Thomas The Fib". At other times, it imagines some inspired fusion of King Tubby, Miles Davis and Dick Dale. Indescribable, really. Ultimately, the best tag might be one coined by the band themselves: "Fuck-Off Jazz". Nice. [+]
