Review Northern Exposure: Mixed By Sasha & John Digweed (UK 2 Disc Edition) / Various Artists:

The Rolls Royce of trance-house mixes, and every bit as cool as the polar bear on the sleeve, this first edition of Sasha and John Digweed's Northern Exposure sets is the tightest and most effortless of the series. With 11 superbly arranged cuts from the likes of William Orbit, Rabbit in the Moon, and the Future Sound of London, not one moment is wasted. The disc's flavor is decidedly organic and wholly evocative of all-night mountain raves or desert parties. Starting with the early-morning stretch of Keiichi Suzuki's delightfully sunny "Satellite Serenade," the duo swiftly build the tempo up to the breezy ambient plateau of Morgan King's "Free" before heading into harder house territories. The metronomic pulse and atmospheric chanteuse vocals of Fuzzy Logic's "Obsession" form an incremental crescendo with Orbit's "Water from a Vine Leaf. " Being a condensed version of the European release, the closing salvo from Banco de Gaia's "Last Train to Lhasa" confirms the since-validated fact that these Exposure journeys have infinite potential; Sasha and Digweed are among the first DJs to create mix sets that tap into earthy, human emotions. It is precisely this unique flavor that will make you yearn for a dance floor, beach, or campsite, packed with deliriously dancing bodies. Yes, really. -Steffan Chirazi.

Review Essential Millennium: Mixed By Pete Tong/Fatboy Slim/Paul Oakenfold / Pete Tong:

Whereas other compilations in Pete Tong's Essential Selections series of DJ mixes have featured one or two big-name jocks, Essential Millenium features three-Tong himself, Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold. With arguably the three biggest DJs of 1999 on board, it really should be something special-and most of it is. All three DJs stick largely to their own musical style, leading to three vastly different discs. Oakenfold steals the show with a breathtaking mix of melodic, uplifting trance that's tough, tuneful, euphoric and nigh on brilliant. Fatboy Slim spins a tight set of party favourites, effortlessly moving between big beat, hard acid house and funky hip hop; though it doesn't come close to matching the brilliance of his own On The Floor At The Big Beat Boutique mix album, it's still quite good. Pete Tong proves to be the loser of the lot, completing the set with the weakest-yet most commercially accessible-mix, chopping together disco house anthems (Phats and Small,Basement Jaxx, Stardust, Armand Van Helden) and Ibiza favourites (Bob Marley vs Funkstar Deluxe, Paul Johnston). Tong's cheesy house-set aside, this collection is as essential as the title implies. -Matt Anniss.

Review Segundo / Juana Molina:

Prior to Segundo, Juana Molina set aside the budding musical career she'd pursued since childhood to become one of TV's most acclaimed comedians in her native Argentina. Her original muse may have been denied for seven years, but was never forgotten; indeed, Molina has managed something of an unexpected musical delight here. Her breathy, gentle vocals haunt unusual song structures and the album's quiet, playful production seems like some restless ghost, wandering a sonic landscape that's as electro as it is Latin. That pan-cultural, less-is-more sense is rare on any collection, let alone on a sophomore album (Rara was released in her native country in 1996) cobbled together between club gigs while living in Los Angeles. Driven by an insistent, plaintive guitar and producer/collaborator Alejandro Franov's delicate, bubbling synth riffs, Molina's unusually structured songs often seem to float in on a breeze and escape on a daydream. She's claimed the album was recorded in moments near the edge of sleep, and that stream-of-unconscious tack variously involves rhythmic choruses of barking dogs, ticking watches and rainforest soundscapes-most so delicately rendered they sometimes seem an auditory illusion-seasoned with impossibly plastic washes of synth and carried by Molina's sweetly somnambulistic vocals. More impressive, Molina's songwriting sense seems as inscrutably subconscious. This is a rare, true musical adventure from first track to last. -Jerry McCulley, Amazon. com.

Review The Outernational Sound: Mixed By the Thievery Corporation / Various Artists:

Although generally regarded as producers, Thievery Corporation have also got great ears for a tune and an extensive record collection. The Outernational Sound is best likened to a branded downbeat compilation such as Back to Mine or Late Night Tales. Beginning with David Snell's "International Flight", a jazzy bass-driven piece, the mix goes through all manner of styles, dips and troughs until it ends with the roots reggae of Delroy Wilson on "Better Must Come". Intelligent drum&bass is well represented well by Thunderball's "Vai Vai"; classic breaks come in the shape of Breakestra's "Cramp Your Style", introduced by the classic sax loop made famous by the 45 King's "900 Number"; and the big tune is Mathar's 1994 Acid Jazz reworking of "Indian Vibes" which features Paul Weller on electric sitar. The Outernational Sound doesn't hold many surprises, it is what many would expect from a Thievery Corporation mix album, but this is no bad thing. The songs are well chosen, the mixing, although unadventurous, is solid and the song selection is diverse and well considered. A good stop-gap before their next artist album. -David Trueman.

Review Soundphiles / Kinobe:

Julius and Blackie's debut longplayer starts off deceptively with the bugging hyperkinetic bounce of "Biological Break" and eases into the arid dark skank of the Benjamin Zephaniah collaboration, Theatricks. Scary stuff. Don't let that put you off however, because Kinobe shine with a more exotic and feel-good sheen elsewhere. Their previous 3 EPs on Pepper were all lush sonic imagings that floated in bluesy and warmer musical waters. After the aforementioned opening confusion, every track on Soundphiles is tailor-made lush soundtrack material-Kinobe never stray too far from the visual ethic. This record is perfect headphone food for daily travels across towns, cities and beyond. The highest points: "Hammock Island" and the Englebert Humplerdinck sampling "Slip Into Something More Comfortable" (with vocals by Ben and Jason) need little explanation as to their chill-out destination. This is the most essential downtempo gem of the summer. I'll have two please. -Dan Stacey.

Review Between Darkness And Wonder / Lamb:

Springing from the trip-hop revolution, Lamb have proved themselves to be masters of their genre. With Between Darkness and Wonder, they consolidate earlier advances rather than invade new territories. Recorded in a farmhouse just outside Bath, their fourth album has singer Lou Robinson and techno-wizard Andy Barlow in fine form. Though the opening "Darkness" is a mess of burbles, scratches and disjointed synths, they quickly find their feet with the quiet clatter and beautifully blended vocals of "Stronger" and the smooth bass and swirling effects of "Sugar 5". Following the instrumental "Angelica", they introduce a deft folky guitar for the excellent and eventually storming augury of "Till the Clouds Clear", and this remains in place for the intimate, innocent "Wonder" and mildly rocking "Sun". Throughout, Barlow creates a series of blissful, sometimes turbulent backdrops for Robinson's sweet voice, cast somewhere between Beth Gibbons and Victoria Williams. In turn, she explores the minutiae of problematic relationships while remaining ever positive. The album suffers somewhat from the addition of three extra remixes, MJ Cole's take on "Gabriel" being inappropriately festive and clunky, while Nellee Hooper's version of the same track is tasteful but, naturally, reminiscent of Bjork. Between Darkness and Wonder could easily stand without them. -Dominic Wills.

Review Sound of Water / St. Etienne:

St. Etienne remain one of the most intelligent, pop literate acts around. Their previous album, 1998's Good Humour, found them breaking with their own conventions by dropping samples and effects in favour of real musicians. However, Sound Of Water sees them blending the two with immaculate good taste: strings and woodwind (arrangements by the High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan) sit alongside bubbling keyboards and quietly throbbing beats while guitars (courtesy of Doves' Jez Williams) rub up against buzzing synths. German electronic pioneers To Rococo Rot chip in with some minimalist, arty arrangements but only in the context of some beautifully sculpted songs. And what songs: "Sycamore", "Don't Back Down", "Downey CA" all swell with the sort of lush, gossamer melodies that breeze through your consciousness like a warm breeze through a curtain. Sarah Cracknell sounds like she's going to expire at any moment, while Wiggs and Stanley breathe life into every musical phrase. -Mike Pattenden.

Review Generation / Audio Bullys:

Two years ago the Audio Bully's delivered their visceral, zeitgeist-capturing debut album Ego Wars. This sophomore effort wisely avoids echoing the same nihilistic manifesto (see "We Don't Care"), drawing instead on a broader palette of sounds and some genuinely effective attempts at songwriting. It wouldn't be an Audio Bully's album without a couple of obligatory floor-wreckers of course, which is what "Keep On Moving" and "Shot You Down" are there for. But the best cuts on Generation are not beefed-up house-rants, but the more introspective recordings like the gritty "Made Like That" (featuring Roots Manuva) and laid back songs such as "Get Myself On Track", "I'm in Love" and "Struck By Sound". Lyrically and musically, Generation is more cerebral than their debut, providing unequivocal evidence that this talented duo are much more than simply a "Streets Pt 2". -Paul Sullivan.
