Review The Braindance Coincidence / Various Artists:

When listening to Braindance, it's somewhat hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the inception of Rephlex Records but Richard D James and Grant Wilson-Claridge's legendary imprint is indeed the latest in a recent plethora of dance labels to reach its first decade. The pair choose to mark the occasion with a mid-price package, Braindance, which brings together back catalogue highlights from their impressive artistic array. The Gentle People open proceedings with the sublime "Journey" but it isn't long before the broken percussives and squealing analogues that have defined much of the output start to raise their head. Global Goon, Ovuka and the Railway Raver offer a rich emotive take while Squarepusher and Cylob bring the noise, the former ravaging "Psultan" by way of drum & bass beats while the latter lays down his inspired robot-voxed, post-pop "Rewind". With so much ground covered in the 16 tracks, all of the material boasts its own strengths though it is m-Ziq's "Swan Vesta" which stands out - bouncing wood block b lines and crazed atmospheres rising to through a rail slamming melodic to a spine crumbling crescendo. -Kingsley Marshall.

Review The Outernational Sound: Mixed By the Thievery Corporation / Various Artists:

Although generally regarded as producers, Thievery Corporation have also got great ears for a tune and an extensive record collection. The Outernational Sound is best likened to a branded downbeat compilation such as Back to Mine or Late Night Tales. Beginning with David Snell's "International Flight", a jazzy bass-driven piece, the mix goes through all manner of styles, dips and troughs until it ends with the roots reggae of Delroy Wilson on "Better Must Come". Intelligent drum&bass is well represented well by Thunderball's "Vai Vai"; classic breaks come in the shape of Breakestra's "Cramp Your Style", introduced by the classic sax loop made famous by the 45 King's "900 Number"; and the big tune is Mathar's 1994 Acid Jazz reworking of "Indian Vibes" which features Paul Weller on electric sitar. The Outernational Sound doesn't hold many surprises, it is what many would expect from a Thievery Corporation mix album, but this is no bad thing. The songs are well chosen, the mixing, although unadventurous, is solid and the song selection is diverse and well considered. A good stop-gap before their next artist album. -David Trueman.

Review Live on Brighton Beach / Fatboy Slim:

On a crystal clear English summer's evening in the summer of 2001, Norman Cook played his most celebrated DJ set Live On Brighton Beach. In front of an estimated 30,000 loved-up Brightonians dancing on the pebbles, the man known to millions as Fatboy Slim took to the decks for two hours of typically hedonistic party mayhem. It's these two hours-or, at least, an edited version of them-that make our Norm's first mix album in yonks and a perfect souvenir of the night now known as "Normstock". Sound wise, the album sees Mr Zoe Ball doing what he does best-mashing up thumping dancefloor favourites in a sweat-drenched party stylee. Those expecting classic big beat belters are in for a shock, though, 'cos these days the Fatboy is more into straight-up house and techno-albeit with the aforementioned party twist. So, we get some of 2001's biggest records-Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?", Raven Maze's "The Real Life", a couple from Santos-alongside a smatering of classics (Leftfield's "Phat Planet", an anthemic version of Underworld's "Born Slippy") and the off Fatboy number to keep the punters sweet. The result is a hot, sweaty, grimy mix that perfectly captures the sound and feel of Norman Cook's DJ sets, even if it does feel a touch out of date. -Matt Anniss.

Review Sao Paulo Confessions / Suba:

First heard on the Brasil 2Mil compilation, the late Suba was part of a new generation of South American musicians (although he was originally from Central Europe) who married airy melodies and percussion with the electronic scene. His music worked especially well because he was a trained musician, and he contributed not only programming but also keyboards to this record. Aided by various vocalists and percussionists, he created grooves that were a million miles from Latin dance but spoke both to Brazilians and club goers. There was a lushness to his sound that captivated, and when the percussion exploded, it came on like fireworks, not a firestorm. This is the sound of one of the world's biggest cities, where darkness can lurk even under the blue skies. It's a shame there'll be no more music from Suba. -Chris Nickson.

Review Plunkett and Macleane - Score / Craig Armstrong:

Electronica artists are increasingly in demand as film scorers. Overall this is good news, and this heavily instrumental music fits especially well with action or sci-fi movies (cf. Pi). Since Plunkett & Macleane is set in the 18th century, choosing Massive Attack associate Craig Armstrong was a bit of an odd choice-one that's mostly paid off. Here Armstrong mixes up Carl Orff-style pomp, string-laden trip-hop, and a somber ambience reminiscent of late 1980s Goth. And despite Lewis Parker's inept (and incongruous) rapping, a cover of Talking Heads' "Houses in Motion" provides a soulful break from the heavy-duty atmospherics that make up most of this CD. We're not talking Miklós Rósza here, but this definitely is an encouraging piece of work. -Elisabeth Vincentelli.

Review Conjure One / Conjure One:

Conjure One, is the self-titled debut from ambient music veteran Rhys Fulber, who previously was a member of production outfits such as Front Line Assembly, Delirium Noise Unit and Intermix. He is also an in-demand producer and his fingerprints can be found on a plethora of records by everyone from metal gurus Fear Factory to the one and-thankfully-only Sarah Brightman. Conjure One is Fulber's first solo outing; hiring a broad range of vocalists including Sinead O'Connor, Israeli chanteuse Chemda, the Argentinian Marie-Claire D'Ubaldo, the American Poe and England's Mel Garside, he has created a conceptual yet personal LP that draws heavily on music from the Middle and Far East. Fusing live instrumentation with plush studio production, Fulber has come up with his own no-holds-barred take on these exotic musical traditions. Unfortunately, as happens with so many projects of this nature, he has overcompensated for his cultural voyeurism by writing overly epic songs that are so saturated with "heartfelt" emotion that they end up simply being nauseating. One or two tunes stand out but the real charms for dance-music heads lie in the bonus CD, which contains some tastefully minimal remixes from the likes of Hybrid and Max Graham. -Paul Sullivan.
