Review Not the Same Old Blues Crap Vol. 2 / Various Artists:When you buy a Fat Possum record you're buying an attitude. A title like Not The Same Old Blues Crap II probably hints as much. The Oxford, Mississippi label exists to record old bluesmen-not respectfully, for the archives, but as if they were still capable of working an audience and making a bit of noise in the music business. Hence the jokey titles, occasional freakish mixes and, here, the King Of The Hill-style cover art. The listener's feelings about all this will probably depend on his or her response to the label's artists. The nine on this sampler range from entirely convincing blues practitioners-R. L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough (hypnotic in "Meet Me in the City"), Robert Belfour, the unique Scott Dunbar-to more limited figures such as Asie Payton or Paul "Wine" Jones. If you don't know these bluesmen and haven't encountered the philosophy-in-action of Fat Possum Records, you should, and you could hardly do better than start here. -Tony Russell.

Review California Blues / Sonny Terry:The vocal and acoustic interplay of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee is one of the most instantly recognizable sounds in the blues canon. Brownie's intricate fingerpicking and Sonny's colorful harp playing were forged from years of playing with pioneers like Blind Boy Fuller and Leadbelly. But while they recorded excellent material earlier in their careers, it wasn't until these recordings in 1957 that they were swept up by the folk movement and into the national spotlight. California Blues contains their first two albums for the Fantasy label, and folk-blues dominate the proceedings. Personalized versions of traditionals like "John Henry" and "Motherless Child" are affecting, but the true highlights are the playful tunes like "I Got Fooled" and "I Done Done," which showcase the duo's harmonizing. Repeated listenings reveal a lulling sameness to many of these tracks, but the playing is up to their usual high standards and Sonny's trademark whoops and hollers always entertain. -Ken Hohman.

Review The Very Best of Lightnin' Hopkins / Lightnin' Hopkins:Sam Lightnin' Hopkins made his first recordings back in 1946. He was always the archetypal cranky porch strummer, his parched vocals and free-time guitar embellishments putting him amongst the best of the authentic blues troubadours. This Texas bluesman's catalogue is so vast that it's an impossibly tall order to claim a single disc for "Very Best Of" status. This one makes a valiant try, picking from his early-1960s period when Hopkins was starting to reap rewards from the US folk-blues boom. The booklet is thin on documentation, but the music speaks strongly for itself. Tradition virtually double their sometimes skimpy playing time to an hour, presenting Lightnin' in solo acoustic mode, with small electric-band settings to round off the collection. To start with, Hopkins dismantles evergreens like "Trouble In Mind" and "See See Rider", the later live band cuts featuring guest appearances from Big Joe Williams , Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Then, the idiosyncratic "Shaggy Dad" and "Mr. Dillard's Store" are bolstered by bass, drums and swaggering trombone, Lightnin's guitar amp vibrato turned right up to full power. -Martin Longley.
