Review Natural Blues / Various:Blues is the roots of all other music and its descendants are the fruits-that familiar aphorism remains as true in the age of samplers as it did 40 years ago. Natural Blues is a well-timed compilation inspired by Moby's ubiquitous Play album which blended blues samples so effectively with synths and beats. Anyone curious to know what the originals of Natural Blues (Vera Hall's "Trouble So Hard") and "Find My Baby" (Boy Blue, Willie Jones and Joe Lees Joe Lee's "Rock") sounded like can hear them among 26 tracks that cover just about every shade of the blues from a cappella field recordings, delta, urban, jump and R&B. Familiar classics are present in the shape of Howlin Wolf¹s "Smokestack Lightning" and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Help Me". Few are as unfamiliar as "Death Have Mercy", Vera Smith's naked, chilling spiritual which closes the album. Concise sleeve notes too-if only all marketing tricks were as classy as this one. -Mike Pattenden.

Review John Lee Hooker Plays and Sings the Blues [CASSETTE] / John Lee Hooker:Like other recordings from Hooker's early studio sessions, these tunes bristle with driving energy and ripple with the power of his shouted declarations. This is back porch music from the heart of the Delta, jolted to larger-than-life proportions by the electricity powering Hooker's guitar and by his own strong desire to quit sweeping factories and begin cleaning up on the charts. Although he often reworked themes by earlier bluesmen during this period, it was rare that Hooker outright covered another artist's material. So his riveting interpretations of Muddy Waters's "Please Don't Go" and Big Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues" peak this collection of solo turns that were recorded for Chess in 1951 and '52. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Taj's Blues / Taj Mahal:Taj Mahal's dazzling 1968 debut provides the foundation for this 12-song overview of the bluesman's early solo years. Tracks like "Leaving Trunk" and "Statesboro Blues" from that first record signaled the arrival of a young black man grounded in tradition yet committed to innovation. Over the next half-dozen years, Taj fulfilled much of that promise. Taj's Blues eschews his previous island folk experiments in favor of country blues inspired by Sleepy John Estes and Mississippi John Hurt. -Steven Stolder.

Review King of the Delta Blues Singers [CASSETTE] / Robert Johnson:If there is a recording that is required listening for every blues fan, it's this one. Robert Johnson wasn't just King of the Delta blues; he was one of its founding fathers, and these re-mastered tunes are as timeless and important today as they were all those years ago. The songs that passed into the blues canon, to be covered by countless guitarists over the years, are here: "Crossroad Blues," "Preaching Blues," "Come On In My Kitchen," "Walking Blues," and more. And on this particular version of this often-reissued recording, there's an additional treat: a previously unreleased version of "Traveling Riverside Blues. " Absolutely essential. -Genevieve Williams.
