Review Muddy Waters at Newport 1960/Muddy Waters Live / Muddy Waters:

Muddy Waters (born McKinley Morganfield) was already the greatest living practitioner of the blues when he stepped on stage at the 1960 Newport Blues and Jazz Festival. But while his recordings had made an impact in blues circles, their effect on rock & roll had yet to pronounce itself in his native land via the British Invasion. Instead, Waters toiled in front of small yet devoted crowds who sat mesmerized by his incredible vocal control. The version of "I've Got My Mojo Working" included here illustrates his backing ensemble's strength. But it's really the way Waters curls his voice around a note in such standards as "I Got My Brand on You", "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", and "Baby Please Don't Go" that make this a surefire classic. -Rob O'Connor.

Review The Best of the Vanguard Years / Odetta:

Odetta is one of the last American folksingers with ties to the authentic folk tradition. Mentored in the early '50s by Woody Guthrie cronies Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Pete Seeger (whose "If I Had a Hammer" is covered here in a strangely unmelodic manner), as well as by Harry Belafonte, Odetta is easily identified by her husky voice-a strong influence on both Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman. While with Vanguard, she made a spiritual claim to tunes already associated with Leadbelly ("Midnight Special," "Cotton Fields"), not to mention slave spirituals, pop gospel ("He's Got the Whole World"), and even "Battle Hymn of the Republic. " Classic-rock fans will recognize "Down on Me," which was later electrified by Janis Joplin. The best tracks here, however, are the four unreleased gems that close the CD, running from terrific jazzy blues and R&B (including the great standard "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out") to her take on "House of the Risin' Sun. Review Phantom Blues / Taj Mahal:

This 1996 album picks up where Dancing the Blues left off three years earlier, with producer John Porter and most of the same studio cast. There is more of a New Orleans flavour this time, with barrelhouse pianist Jon Cleary contributing a couple of originals to go with such classics as Jesse Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" and Fats Domino's "Let the Four Winds Blow".
