Review John Lee Hooker Plays and Sings the Blues [CASSETTE] / John Lee Hooker:

Like other recordings from Hooker's early studio sessions, these tunes bristle with driving energy and ripple with the power of his shouted declarations. This is back porch music from the heart of the Delta, jolted to larger-than-life proportions by the electricity powering Hooker's guitar and by his own strong desire to quit sweeping factories and begin cleaning up on the charts. Although he often reworked themes by earlier bluesmen during this period, it was rare that Hooker outright covered another artist's material. So his riveting interpretations of Muddy Waters's "Please Don't Go" and Big Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues" peak this collection of solo turns that were recorded for Chess in 1951 and '52. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review Tarbox Ramblers / Tarbox Ramblers:

Where folk revivalists too often take a neutered, pedigreed approach, the Tarbox Ramblers prefer a mongrel mix with plenty of growl and bite. Much of the material on this Boston, Massachusetts quartet's debut album comes from the Mississippi Delta, with the music's bluesy spirit reinforced by Michael Tarbox's unvarnished vocals and the slash of his slide guitar. Yet fiddler Daniel Kellar sounds like he was borrowed from a traditional bluegrass band, while the stand-up bass and stripped-down percussion recall the rhythms of skiffle or jug-band music. The Ramblers' garage-band dynamic blows the dust off standards such as "The Cuckoo", "St. James Infirmary" and "Stewball", but what's most encouraging for the band's future are a couple of atmospheric originals: "Third Jinx Blues" and "No Harm Blues". What the Pogues did for traditional Irish music, the Tarbox Ramblers could do for traditional American. -Don McLeese.
