Review At Newport 1960/Live / Muddy Waters:

Muddy Waters (born McKinley Morganfield) was already the greatest living practitioner of the blues when he stepped on stage at the 1960 Newport Blues and Jazz Festival. But while his recordings had made an impact in blues circles, their effect on rock & roll had yet to pronounce itself in his native land via the British Invasion. Instead, Waters toiled in front of small yet devoted crowds who sat mesmerized by his incredible vocal control. The version of "I've Got My Mojo Working" included here illustrates his backing ensemble's strength. But it's really the way Waters curls his voice around a note in such standards as "I Got My Brand on You", "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", and "Baby Please Don't Go" that make this a surefire classic. -Rob O'Connor.

Review A Bothered Mind / R.L. Burnside:

John Lennon once claimed that "the blues is a chair…the first chair," explaining the music's primacy in the grand scheme of things. That notion is richly underscored on this follow-up to late-blossoming North Mississippi bluesman R. L. Burnside's initial 1998 remix collection. While Kid Rock's rollicking duet cum roadhouse free-for-all on "My Name is Robert Too" further grounds his rootsy reinvention, Bay Area hip-hopper Lyrics Born lays a lugubrious guitar groove on "Goin' Down South" and kicks up "Someday Baby" with a word-tripping nod to Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues. " But those flashy guest turns shouldn't distract from the real attraction here: Burnside's own earthy, rhythmically propulsive acoustic (the moody "Bird Without a Feather" source recording dates to 1968) and electric performances, as deftly refocused and punched up by producers Mike E. Clark and Tino Gross. Listeners familiar with Burnside's re-worked contributions to the hit Sopranos soundtrack and its follow-up will find this collection a rewarding shotgun wedding of something borrowed and something new-a smart, modern take on the blues. -Jerry McCulley.

Review The Wheel Man / Watermelon Slim & Workers:

This Oklahoma City singer and slide guitarist is at the creative apex of traditional blues. He took the roundabout route to get there-fighting in the jungles of Vietnam, officiating at funerals, and working as a trucker, forklift operator, saw miller, firewood salesman, and collection agent until a near-fatal heart attack compelled him to find his calling as a bandleader in 2002. Slim's fourth album since then is even sharper than 2006's critically heralded breakthrough Watermelon Slim & the Workers. It's a devil's playground for his weathered-oak voice and Delta-fueled six-stringing, full of stories of crime ("The Wheel Man"), lust ("Peaches"), and sin ("Jimmy Bell"). For Slim, that's par for the course, but this time he's drafted Chicago blues stalwart Magic Slim for a terse, burnished solo and vocal turns on the title tune and piano great David Maxwell to make three other numbers sparkle and jump. Yet some of the most compelling songs, like the howling a cappella "Jimmy Bell" and the slide 'n' vocal turn "Judge Harsh Blues" are Watermelon Slim alone. And that's enough. His sound and his soul are packed with true, natural grit. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review From Spirituals to Swing / Various Artists:

In many ways, these 1938 and 1939 Carnegie Hall concerts ushered in an exciting period of black music for the American public. While great bandleaders like Benny Goodman had been blurring the color line for years, From Spirituals to Swing was the first prominent Carnegie Hall production to present African American performers to an integrated audience. Besides the racial and political implications of John Hammond's controversial shows, the producer was able to bring together some of the era's finest talent in jazz, blues, and gospel music. Recorded straight onto lacquer discs before the advent of long-playing albums and first released in 1959, this three-CD set includes two dozen previously unreleased performances by the likes of the Count Basie Orchestra, bluesman Sonny Terry, the Golden Gate Quartet, and James P. Johnson. There are several notable moments in Hammond's Carnegie collection, previously unreleased and otherwise. Naturally, this includes swinging presentations by a Basie band that showcase star-studded soloists like Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Herschel Evans, and Harry "Sweets" Edison. There are also three dynamic performances by the Kansas City Six, which feature the rare pairing of tenor saxophonist Lester Young with early guitar great Charlie Christian. The box set also includes wonderful vocal contributions from Joe Turner, Helen Humes, and Jimmy Rushing as well as blues icon Big Bill Broonzy and gospel matriarch Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Unusual artistic combinations make these Hammond productions particularly distinctive. [+]
The live trio collaborations between boogie-woogie pianists Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, and Pete Johnson are fast-paced and terrifically exciting. The New Orleans Feetwarmers showcase the Basie rhythm section of bassist Walter Page and drummer Jo Jones alongside Sidney Bechet and piano legend James P. Johnson for some real Dixieland music. While gospel contributions from the Golden Gate Quartet and Mitchell's Christian Singers are powerfully emotive, it's the seasoned work of Benny Goodman that tops off this fascinating set of performances. With a group that included Charlie Christian, Lionel Hampton, and pianist Fletcher Henderson, Goodman presents classic compositions like "I Got Rhythm" and "Stompin' at the Savoy. " With a jam session finale of "Oh, Lady Be Good," From Spirituals to Swing sums up two historic musical events that should not forgotten. -Mitch Myers.

Review Hoodoo Lady / Memphis Minnie:

True to her billing ("plays guitar like a man"), Minnie held her own in a genre dominated by male artists. She had a gutsy voice and a no-nonsense guitar style. These 20 prime cuts were done in Chicago for the Vocalion and ARC labels. Recorded in the late '30s, many contain small band accompaniment that included Charlie McCoy's dynamic mandolin as well as legendary pianists Blind John Davis and Black Bob. Two cuts, "Please Don't Stop Him" and "I'm Going Don't You Know," feature Arnett Nelson's smooth clarinet work. Although Minnie would continue to record for several more decades, she would never be better than she was during these sessions. -Lars Gandil.
