Review Remembering Big Bill Broonzy: the Greatest Minstrel of the Authentic Blues / Big' Bill Broonzy:Long before hip-hop got into bed with rock and Jazz flirted with soul, the blues entertained not only cross-country relations with jazz and the worksong, but also cross-continental rhythms with European folk and immigrant culture. This CD personifies this, painting Broonzy as a kind of reactionary of this era, flexing blatant tongue in cheek protest on "Get Back" (". Whites alright, Browns stick around, Blacks get back!"), whilst taking on differing influences-such as the vigorous folk strut of "John Henry" and the big band assisted "Walkin' Down A Lonesome Road". Vocally, Broonzy has the capacity to bark and growl in blues tradition, but "Willie May" is probably the best display of his signature sound. Robbed of his ability at 58 through cancer, Broonzy left a legacy to inspire millions, and these 11 tracks serve as a fine introduction to both beginners and enthusiast alike. -Found Sounds.

Review Backwater Blues / Sonny Terry:Few blues partnerships were ever as successful and satisfying as the union of Sonny Terry's down-home harmonica work and Brownie McGhee's polished guitar lines. This generous, 18-tune live session catches the late acoustic blues brothers in their physical prime and at their musical best, rolling through an energetic set of conversational blues with casual virtuosity and seemingly telepathic interplay. Terry, a stone-cold traditionalist, contributes a raw-boned, backwoods feel with his heavily textured singing and harp solos while the modern McGhee's smooth vocals and clean picking provide a perfectly compatible counterpoint and complement. Either artist could carry the show by himself, but when the divergent styles musically intertwine they create a wonderful blues synthesis unlike any other the blues has known. The dynamic duo jumps right in with a reconfigured rendition of "Sittin' on Top of the World" and doesn't let up until the end. With Terry whooping and hollering between harp breaks and McGhee opening songs with comic asides the session is an unusually personable one. It's all undeniably authentic and eminently enjoyable, as well as positive blues proof that on very rare and fortunate occasions the whole is much greater than just the sum of the two parts. -Michael Point.

Review John Lee Hooker The Complete 50's Chess Recordings / John Lee Hooker:Hooker was already making hits (for Modern) when he started to record for Chicago's legendary Chess Records in 1952. So he's at the peak of his powers on these solo sides from 1952 to '54, and with Eddie "Guitar" Burns, pianist Lafayette Leak, and drummer Fred Below in 1966. The '50s numbers stomp and grind through Hooker's typically down-'n'-dirty songwriting. "Ground Hog Blues" is especially gritty, as he describes how he'll poison his woman's lover. Those cuts also show the influence of pre-war blues personalities Sleepy John Estes (on "Worried Life Blues"), Tampa Red ("Sugar Mama"), Sonny Boy Williamson ("Louise"), Johnny Temple ("Please Don't Go"), and Big Joe Williams ("Bluebird"). The '66 band recordings include his classics "The Waterfront" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer". -Ted Drozdowski.
