Review Legacy / Guy Davis:

Guy Davis started his performing career as an actor-he was Dr. Josh Hall on One Life to Live in the 1980s and he played Robert Johnson in the off-Broadway play Trick the Devil-and his first recordings, while quite good, sometimes sounded as if he were just playing the role of a bluesman. On Legacy, Davis's seventh CD, his honey-and-gravel voice has mellowed, his intricate guitar picking has sharpened, and all traces of his earlier staginess have gone. When he plays Mississippi John Hurt's "Pay Day" or Lightnin' Hopkins's "Come Back Baby" he brings an authority to the music that only comes from deep understanding. And his own songs, such as the moody and moving "I Just Can't Help Loving You" or the jittery, banjo-driven "Red Goose," show that he has assimilated the old styles and has found a way to bring them into the modern world without sounding like a mere imitator. Review Sometime Tuesday Morning / Johnny A.:

Sometime Tuesday Morning starts with a mysterioso Spanish-tinge deep-feel samba, guitarist Johnny A and his trio (it's guitar-bass-drums based, but not a power-trio by any means) showing that Charlie Hunter and Medeski, Martin & Wood aren't the only youngsters around who can go back to the 1960s and find fresh things to reinterpret. Johnny is firmly in the frame for great grooves, and as left-field a claim as it may sound, his blueprints seem more likely to be Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins and Hank Garland than Wes Montgomery, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. Johnny contributes well over half the compositions here, and most of them coalesce around the kind of quietly rollicking mid-tempo rhythm that organ trios used to favour in the early 1960s. His covers include a worthy shot at Lennon/McCartney's "Yes It Is" (although things get a little stodgy by the end), an excellent, strutting "Walk Don't Run" and a sensational ballad reading of "Wichita Lineman" that gets you reaching for the repeat button more than once. Impossible to categorise, this will have to be put down to "great guitar music". Bill Frisell be warned. -Keith Shadwick.
