Review O Brother, Where Art Thou? / Various Artists:Joel and Ethan Coen have long established themselves as film stylists without peer: from Blood Simple to Fargo, their movies have never been less than fascinating, and there has never been any question that their films could not have been made by anyone else. In T-Bone Burnett, the producer of the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, they have finally met their match: Burnett's work in assembling a collection of pieces for the Depression-set film is as skilled and entrancing as the film itself. Despite the presence of Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, the stars here are the songs themselves, a host of traditional songs augmented by archival recordings. The collection is also a showcase for a host of lesser known and forgotten bluegrass masters: The Cox Family, collaborators with Krauss; Norman Blake, a sideman for Bob Dylan and June Carter Cash; country gospel group The Whites, who once counted Ricky Skaggs as a member (and who, here, cover the Carter Family); and young bluesman Chris Thomas King among them. All bring life to their songs, and the results are sublime-and, at times (Krauss and a choir's take on "Down To The River to Pray", Blake's instrumental version of the oft-repeated "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow"), downright entrancing. Some of these songs can be found on Alan Lomax collections. If you enjoy this album, we also highly recommend the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music and Woody Guthrie's Asch Recordings series. -Randy Silver.

Review Hard Again / Muddy Waters:It's seems strange now to think of Muddy Waters's having to make a "comeback," but that's what the 1977 Hard Again came down to. The great bluesman's first post-Chess recording after 30 years with that company, it marked Waters's major-label debut and eventually went gold. The over-60 Waters lived up to all the attention with one of his most energetic, sustained performances, bettering his original version of "Mannish Boy," pushing "Bus Driver" to a raging peak, and generally sounding like the wisest man on record. Harp player James Cotton and producer-guitarist Johnny Winter are among the support; they both stay out of Waters's way and give as good as they get. -Rickey Wright It's seems strange now to think of Muddy Waters's having to make a "comeback," but that's what the 1977 Hard Again came down to. Review The Very Best of Lightnin' Hopkins: Blues Masters / Lightnin' Hopkins:Hopkins may have enjoyed unprecedented world-wide popularity as a blues and folk artist during the 1960s, but his best work was mostly recorded in the previous two decades. This Rhino selection, put together by James Austin, culls tracks recorded for labels such as Aladdin, Sittin' In With, Gold Star, Jax, Folkways and Bluesville, from 1946 to 1961. Specialists will want the complete Gold Star and Aladdin material in particular, but this is a fine sampling of Hopkins in a variety of settings most typical of his career. The 1946 "Katie May Blues" documents his early partnership with pianist Thunder Smith (hence the nickname "Lightnin'" for plain Sam Hopkins) and also shows why he felt the need to strike out on his own soon after. For most of his life Lightnin' preferred playing as a solo, and his uncanny, tersely moving guitar accompaniment for his stark, often cryptic vocals shows that this was a wise as well as economically ideal choice. The brooding "Automobile", from 1949, drives this point nicely home. In a well-balanced selection, two of the four 1961 tracks feature Sonny Terry. -Keith Shadwick.

Review King Of The Delta Blues Singers / Robert Johnson:When this collection was first released, back in 1961, it soon became the bible of that decade's folk-blues revival, a set of songs which had scorched deep lines in the blues psyche, subsequently modified, electrified and boogie-fied. This reissue also includes a freshly exhumed alternative take of "Travelling Riverside Blues", as good an excuse as any to upgrade from old vinyl. The original album pulled together all of Johnson's classic songs, his ghost suddenly made corporeal for a generation that had only heard of the rare 78s via whispered rumour. "Cross Road Blues", "Terraplane Blues", "Hell Hound On My Trail": they're all tortured cries for help, Johnson most likely at the end of his teens when he recorded his only two sessions, first in 1936, then 37. He was a complete individual: these songs may well be fodder for countless cover versions, but few modern artists can hope to reproduce the originator's stylistic mannerisms. Johnson favoured uneven lines, unpredictable emphasis, strumming and plucking around an implied central melody. For the experienced listener, it's probably wise to invest in Complete Recordings, but as an introduction to Johnson's unique art, this disc has certainly stood the test of time. -Martin Longley.

Review Anthology / Muddy Waters:Muddy Waters should need no introduction. Not only did he provide a name for the world's greatest rock & roll band, but he also created the Chicago electric blues sound that's dominated the genre since he first hit the windy city in the late 1940s. His bands also featured what would become a who's who of electric blues: Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and the list goes on. The Anthology covers Waters's most important period: his first years at Chess through the late 1960s. All his best-known songs are featured in their definitive versions, providing the perfect introduction to a blues master who doesn't need one. -Mike Johnson.

Review The Complete Recordings: All 41 Recordings / Robert Johnson:This two-CD box contains all 41 recordings Johnson made, including 12 alternate takes, and each cut remains a classic. This set's release in 1990 caused quite a stir, selling more than 500,000 copies and, on the basis of endorsements from Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, introduced a great number of rock fans to Delta blues. Amazingly, Johnson built his enormous legacy on the strength of just two recording sessions: the first session, in November of 1936, produced among others "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom", "Sweet Home Chicago", "Cross Road Blues" and "Walkin' Blues", making it perhaps the most influential single session in blues' history. -Marc Greilsamer.

Review The Wheel Man / Watermelon Slim & Workers:This Oklahoma City singer and slide guitarist is at the creative apex of traditional blues. He took the roundabout route to get there-fighting in the jungles of Vietnam, officiating at funerals, and working as a trucker, forklift operator, saw miller, firewood salesman, and collection agent until a near-fatal heart attack compelled him to find his calling as a bandleader in 2002. Slim's fourth album since then is even sharper than 2006's critically heralded breakthrough Watermelon Slim & the Workers. It's a devil's playground for his weathered-oak voice and Delta-fueled six-stringing, full of stories of crime ("The Wheel Man"), lust ("Peaches"), and sin ("Jimmy Bell"). For Slim, that's par for the course, but this time he's drafted Chicago blues stalwart Magic Slim for a terse, burnished solo and vocal turns on the title tune and piano great David Maxwell to make three other numbers sparkle and jump. Yet some of the most compelling songs, like the howling a cappella "Jimmy Bell" and the slide 'n' vocal turn "Judge Harsh Blues" are Watermelon Slim alone. And that's enough. His sound and his soul are packed with true, natural grit. -Ted Drozdowski.

Review The Rough Guide to Delta Blues: Sounds from the Cottonfields of the Deep South / Various Artists:It isn't often a CD conjures magic out of the past the way The Rough Guide to Delta Blues does, but as Johnathan Ogle puts it in his excellent sleeve notes, these sounds from the Deep South cotton fields really are the cornerstone of American popular music. One by one, in tracks that are blissfully uncleaned-up, the well-chosen voices take it in turns to assert their own particular brand of down-home beauty. There are murderers and preachers aplenty, sometimes blind, sometimes in possession of an alarming physical dexterity; the oldest recordings-like that of herbal medic Robert Wilkins-are the most intensely characterful. But there's an enormous range of styles represented here, from the nifty slide guitar and chameleon tones of Robert Johnson to the heavy rasp of Charley Patton and the unmistakeable timbre of Big Bill Broonzy. Every track has its own fascination, whether it's barrelhouse pianist Louise Johnson extolling the virtues of doing it standing up, Fred McDowell demonstrating his "slash and drone" guitar technique, or Alfred Lewis rapidly alternating between whoops, hollers and blasts on his harmonica. And in Tommy Johnson's deft falsetto we see where latter-day falsettist Bobby McFerrin got his inspiration. -Michael Church.
