Review Softly With These Songs - The Best of Roberta Flack / Roberta Flack:As an interpreter of other people's material, Roberta Flack was peerless, capable of investing even sugary trifles like "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" and "Feel Like Makin' Love" with a rare warmth and sensuality. And when given something worthy of her talents-"Killing Me Softly With His Song", for example-she positively shone; her reading of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (the undoubted highlight here) ranks as one of pop's most unforgettable moments, a genuinely transcendent masterpiece. But times change, and nowhere is the decline in Flack's artistic fortunes more evident than in her choice of collaborator: from her work in the 1970s with the brilliant Donny Hathaway (who duets here on "Where Is The Love" and "Back Together Again"), through the 1980s, and the wretched Peabo Bryson ("Tonight, I Celebrate My Love"), right up to the obligatory "House Mix" of "Uh-Uh Ooh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", a moronic slice of euro-disco. Yet despite the paucity of the material, that voice could still melt a glacier. -Andrew McGuire.

Review J.Lo / Jennifer Lopez:Like Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez has entered the singing, dancing, acting, can-do-anything zone of the bona fide superstar and has developed an ego to match her talents. J. Lo, the follow-up to her multi-platinum 1999 debut On The 6, makes little attempt to tinker with the latino soul formula she patented back then, employing an army of co-producers and writers (including partner Puffy) to assemble a slick, 15-track affair. If anything, her sound is safe, retro even, with some tracks looking back to the 1980s, particularly the Michael Jackson-influenced "I'm Real" and the funky, impressive "Play". Her Puerto Rican background comes to the fore on a handful of Spanish numbers, notably "Cariño", which samples Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria's "Sofrito" to impressive effect. It goes badly wrong on the "La Isla Bonita" sound-a-like, "Ain't It Funny", which merely serves to reinforce the impression that Lopez is happy to settle for being the latino Madonna. -Mike Pattenden.

Review I Care Because You Do / Aphex Twin:None of the chirpy, intricate, eclectic tracks on I Care Because You Do sound dated, certainly not in any heinous way. Richard James's work stands outside any genre cages and continues to satisfy dedicated listeners. This is at least partially due to James's twisted, bad-boy sense of humour: the title of the disc alone is something of an ironic display. I Care is a sound introduction to James's peculiar, personal work, which ranges from symphonic to spartan to relaxing to unnerving, though it generally manages to be all those at once. The disc is cleverly constructed and juicily modern and it's easy to see why critics, struggling to understand James's emergent "ambient techno" early on compared him to minimalist composers such as Philip Glass and Steve Reich. James was clearly influenced by these pioneers, but his music is more about stretching the limits of what one perceives to be music, of sound itself. -Mike McGonigal.

Review Dread Meets Punk Rockers Uptown: the Soundtrack to London's Legendary Roxy Club December 1976-April 1977 / Various Artists:For all the acres of music press newsprint whipped up by the British punk explosion, in late 1976, actual quality punk rock records were scarce. The movement-the fashion, the attitude, the sense of rebellion-had arrived long before the record companies could capture it on vinyl, so London's Roxy club catered for the discerning clubber with another edgy rebel sound: dub reggae. Compiled by the club's rastafari DJ Don Letts-a future Big Audio Dynamite member, and one-time manager of punk-reggae maidens The Slits-Dreads Meets The Punk Rockers Uptown showcases a selection of the era's breaking Jamaican sounds. There's a wealth of bona fide dub classics here, in the shape of King Tubby's "Bag Of Wire Dub", Augustus Pablo's "King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown", Lee "Scratch" Perry's "The Tackro", and The Congos' "Fisherman". The most intriguing tracks, however, are those included as a signpost towards punk's evolution: see Junior Murvin's "Police And Thieves", later to be covered by The Clash, marking punk's shift away from posturing white guitar rage, and towards defiant, anti-authoritarian multicultural statements.
