Review Holy Wood / Marilyn Manson:The impact of Marilyn Manson's subversive musical agenda has waned, and what's left is a provocative, talented artist writing affecting, powerful and, yes, controversial songs. Although Holy Wood is the third title of a trilogy that began with 1996's Antichrist Superstar, this is an album that stands on its own. Rife with references to the Beatles and the Dead Kennedys, and full of pop-culture barbs, Holy Wood is a musically diverse and powerful statement. The memorable sing-along "Disposable Teens" boasts the same kind of staccato, Teutonic, fist-thrusting power introduced with "Beautiful People", while "Fight Song" sounds like the Sex Pistols meets Blur by way of Nirvana. While a futuristic, nihilistic tint pervades Manson's work, passion is also prevalent, notably in the spooky acoustic number "A Place in the Dirt" and the brutal "Death Song". Like Marilyn Manson the man, Holy Wood is intelligent, dynamic and multifaceted, with myriad charms that are evident to the tuned-in listener. -Katherine Turman.

Review People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm / Tribe Called Quest:People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is, quite simply, one of the finest albums in hip-hop. It's easy to argue that A Tribe Called Quest reached their zenith on this, their debut album: though they went on to produce another world-class disc (The Low End Theory) and broadened their palates and their consciousness, never again were they quite this naturally free and easy. Q-Tip and Phife's delivery is deceptively simple, flowing like wine and tasting like candy, and Jairobi adds some contrast. The music, so self-assured that it never raises its voice to make a spectacle, follows suit. Four albums later, on their last tour, songs from Paths of Rhythm still were at the top of the set list. -Randy Silver.

Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes corral a host of special guests to populate their barbed soundscapes and their knack for finding the perfect environment to bring out the best in their chosen guest is as sure as ever. Liam Gallagher excels himself on the title track, inspired by cult filmmaker Kenneth Anger's celebrated movie, Paul Weller brings just the right measure of disdain to a simmering version of Gene Clark's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby", while Hope Sandoval's sultry tones bring a sensual glow to the storming finale "Help Yourself". Review To All New Arrivals / Faithless:Faithless's fifth studio album, To All New Arrivals, is a tribute of sorts to the brand new babies that band-members Rollo and Sister Bliss recently (and separately) brought into the world. Lead single "Bombs", with its chugging, understated beat, social analysis and decidedly anti-war stance, makes for an impressive start. From there the album gets a little bogged down in the rose-tinted sentimentality of 'new parent' syndrome. "Spiders, Crocodiles and Kryptonite" has someone uttering childish inanities in a silly voice (its saved by an extended segment of the Cure's "Lullaby" - but only just); the uplifting "Music Matters" (with Cass Fox) is marred by mawkish lyrics; "I Hope" offers similarly trite messages of parental hope, and the title track plots sounds like a song for Children In Need. All this is doubtless well meant, but comes across as naïve, even vacuous in places. Fortunately the music fares better. Aside from the wishy-washy "Last This Day" (with Dido) and the nondescript "Nate's Tune," the robust "Hope & Glory", the wonderful "A Kind Of Peace" (with Cat Power), the catchy "The Man In You" and the bristling finale, "Emergency", show that Faithless are still capable of writing rousing club sounds. -Paul Sullivan.
