Review Anatomic / Afro Celt Sound System:

Their debut album broke down many tediously outdated barriers. Now the Afro-Celts are back with another genre-bursting, non-preachy, multi-culti soundscape. There has never been anything bland or generic about the ensemble's output as their concept of one-world music is less color-blind than color-appreciative; in other words, they don't ignore our differences but celebrate them. Anatomic continues an ongoing pilgrimage of respectful collaboration, wherein Western studio mastery abuts Irish flutes and percussion, harp-like West African koras, keening bagpipes, and gutty Greek bouzoukis, all presented over a resonant, crunchy bottom with beats and electronica for days. Iarla Ó Lionáird sings in English and Gaelic, sitting in with Sevara Nazarkhan from Uzbekistan (who is lovely if disembodied on "My Secret Bliss") and Dorothee Munyaneza, a genocide survivor whose soulful pipes made such a strong impression on the soundtrack to Hotel Rwanda. As always, Simon Emmerson's guitar fulfills dual roles as a melodic vector and tireless rhythmic powerhouse. -Christina Roden.

Review Full Moon / Brandy:

It's hard to believe that Full Moon is the young Brandy's fourth album. Despite her youth, the former Moesha TV star has had an admirable career. Her debut single, the hyperkinetic "I Wanna Be Down" boasted rap support from female MCs, Lyte, Yo Yo and Queen Latifah-not bad for a teenager! Since then all her subsequent singles, from "Baby" to her irreverent cover of Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise" have been radio-friendly A-list hits. And let's not forget her duet with Monica, the classic "The Boy is Mine". Like her previous albums, Brandy has an on-form, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins in the producer's chair and her deeper vocal power and technique are never in question. Not only does this emphasise her growing maturity, but the songs are as good as ever. The single, "What About Us" with its jerky syncopated R&B-hip-hop rhythms has smash written all over it but luckily this isn't a one-hit wonder album. The title track and "I Thought" are cut from the same elegant and funky cloth and should get even the more jaded fan jumping. Brandy updates her style very well showing off her versatility throughout. Just cock an ear to the bouncing "All of Me" and "It's Not Worth It" with their atypical two-step rhythms, the Aaliyah-like "Anybody" and the lovely ballad, "Nothing" and you will understand why Brandy has the potential to cross over into even bigger mainstream success. Review MTV Unplugged 2.0 / Lauryn Hill:

Everybody knows Lauryn Hill's a brilliant artist but MTV Unplugged No. 2. 0 just confirms it. This double CD acoustic set recorded for the music television channel contains snippets of material from her debut album, but mostly it's all new "L Boogie" folks. Hill gives a raw, honest performance that comes after a shocking period of depression and unhappiness for the ex-Fugees singer. According to reports Hill lost her creative light after copyright lawsuits over her debut) and a tempestuous relationship with her partner Rohan Marley (son of Bob). Now she's divested herself of emotional and physical baggage (though not Rohan), evident in this stripped down performance that is basically just Hill and her unplugged guitar. The material's release has been long delayed, no reasons have been given but this session's highly spiritual nature may lie behind it. Hill's found spirituality in a big way. New material includes "I Find It Hard To Say (Rebel)", a blistering comment on the shooting of African immigrant Amadou Diallo by the New York police in 1999. [+]
Throughout Hill's voice is rough and throaty giving the performance an earthy, heartfelt pull. She cuts across musical styles from bossa nova ("Just Like Water") to Marley-esque rebel songs ("Oh Jerusalem", "The Conquering Lion", "Freedom Time"). And Hill's lyrics are deeply personal. She sings of stepping away from her public persona to keep from being trapped by the image fame created for her. She rails against everything from self-delusion to government corruption to religious dogma without being overbearing or pretentious. In destroying her old artistry she discovers a new creative force. And all the while she stays mesmerisingly, enchantingly musical. Who else could leave Alicia Keys sounding like a wannabe? This is an instant classic. -Jake Barnes.

Review 200 km/h In The Wrong Lane / T.A.T.U.:

Two comely teenage lesbian lovers from Russia who happen to sing? That seems more like a marketing masterstroke than pop music likelihood, so it's fair to question the authenticity of t. A. T. u. 's English language debut 200 Km/h in the Wrong Lane. It's impossible to know where t. A. T. u. 's talent begins and ends and just how much influence their various handlers and producer Trevor Horn had over the record but it's probably a moot point to the intended demographic. [+]
Horn's background working with electro-pop dandies Pet Shop Boys and Frankie Goes to Hollywood is evident in the crisp, driving synth cushioning singers Lena Katina and Julia Volkova's gossamer vocals. Wink-nudge lyrical references to girls loving girls-presented in serviceable if phonetic English-are in evidence, though they're more coy than graphic. "All the Things She Said", a sparkly, chorus-driven rave-up, seems to make the case for sexual equality, while "Show Me Love" (which appears in regular and extended versions) is a dancefloor missive aimed straight at the clubs. Best, though is an unintentionally ironic cover of the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now". The song, a benchmark of loneliness and hopelessness, is utterly transformed into a chirpy duet which, all things considered, may be the best gimmick of all. -Kim Hughes.

Review G. Love & Special Sauce / G. Love:

Despite emerging in the same year that Beck released his Mellow Gold debut, G Love is still a relative unknown in the UK. It's a shame, because the Philadephian's take on slacker hip-hop deserves a wider audience, not just for the deep soul, funk and even country grooves that he entices the listener to embrace, but for the inventiveness of his format. Steeped in blues licks, the album was recorded practically live with just an acoustic trio of upright bass, piano and drums accompanying G Love's guitar. Admittedly the vocals, which veer too much toward a lounge singer trying to do a lazy rap, are an acquired taste, but several years on, this album sounds fresh and at the end of the day all it really lacked was a killer track like "Loser". -Tim Perry With Beck's unexpected commercial breakthrough, everyone's suddenly interested in a new kind of music best described as "slacker-rap. " Although it uses the sing-song cadences of hip-hop, it's the polar opposite of gangsta rap; in both its laid-back delivery and self-deprecating lyrics, slacker-rap acknowledges vulnerability and failure. It was done first and best by Washington's Basehead, but it gets an invigorating twist on "G. Love and Special Sauce," the eponymous debut album from this Philadelphia trio. G. Love not only looks like Michael Stipe, but he has the same mealy-mouthed vocal delivery. [+]
If Stipe ever decided to record his first rap album with an unplugged blues trio, it'd probably sound a lot like "G. Love and Special Sauce. " Recorded live with no drum machines, samples or overdubs, the album creates a fresh, distinctive sound with its odd blend of lazy rapping and funky acoustic blues. Unfortunately, G. Love's absurdist observations on life aren't as funny as those by John S. Hall of King Missle, and the laid-back minimalism of the music wears thin after a while. Only "Baby's Got Sauce," which boasts a pop hook and a valentine to a domineering woman, holds up on repeated listens. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review Future Days (Remastered Sacd/CD Hybrid) / Can:

The second wave of Can reissues, freshly remastered by bassist/studio wizard Holger Czukay, keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, and engineer Jono Podmore repeats the trick pulled on the first batch, stripping away background hiss and muddiness and leaving these epochal recordings sounding impossibly fresh. The pick is undeniably Future Days, considered by many to be the group's finest hour: the last album to feature deranged Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki, it sees the band working as one, crafting long vistas of blissful ambient sound powered by Jaki Liebzeit's steady, machine-like drumming. 1974's Soon Over Babaluma is an underrated Can moment, however: guitarist Michael Karoli switches to violin on "Dizzy Dizzy", even adding a hushed, mantric vocal, while the eleven-minute "Chain Reaction" offers the first taste of Can's disco-influenced future. Something of a mixed bag, Unlimited Edition is most interesting as an example of Can's musical breadth: a compilation spanning five years, it features everything from the cranked Velvets garage of "Mother Upduff" - featuring original vocalist Malcolm Mooney - to "Cutaway", seventeen minutes of dizzying tape-splice experiments. Finally, 1975's Landed: it's far from a highlight of Can's back catalogue, but "Hunters And Collectors" and the raging "Vernal Equinox", featuring some furious Karoli soloing, are not without their charms. -Louis Pattison.

Review The Supreme Clientele / Ghostface Killah:

A spell in Rikers obviously hasn't done Ghostface Killah any harm. The Wu member remains as grounded as ever in the realities of life on his second set Supreme Clientele. Musically, the album is a juiced-up model of the classic soul prototype provided by "Iron Man", over which Ghostface delivers a sermon of sexual healing and violent provocation, pitched precariously somewhere in between Marvin Gaye and Malcolm X. The intro plays out over a vintage voiceover from an Iron Man Saturday-morning cartoon, then jumps straight into "Nutmeg", where the repeated groove of a soul classic provides the perfect stuttering accompaniment for Ghostface to spit a selection of nasty, nanotech-constructed rhymes. "Apollo Kids" pastes together a dramatic backdrop from orchestrated musical punctuation marks, while the primitive R&B grunt of "The Grain" sounds like it could have been recorded live at the Apollo. And over the rest ofSupreme Clientele's 60-odd minutes, Ghostface keeps the classics coming like a real pro. -Chris Campion.

Review Eden / Everything But The Girl:

Everything but the Girl hit the ground running with their first album, Eden; in some ways, they wouldn't equal the effort again for years. Though both Tracy Thorn and Ben Watt learned how to use their voices to better effect over the years, their vocal talents are evident here. Singing over a gentle, tropical-toned combo, Thorn sounds strong and free, and, when the occasion calls for it, vulnerable. Watt may be a little melodramatic on "Tender Blue", but the affecting "Soft Touch" more than makes up for it. Meanwhile, "Another Bridge" presages "Me and Bobby D" (from The Language of Life); "The Dustbowl" succinctly captures a post-break-up reflection with only a modicum of regret; "Frost and Fire" reaches out from daughter to mother; and "I Must Confess" neatly sambas its way out of a finished relationship. Mature, intelligent, and unflinchingly romantic, it ranks among EBTG's best work. -Randy Silver.
