Review The Soul Sessions / Joss Stone:Joss Stone is blessed with a strong voice and a will to sing old-school soul and The Soul Sessions is worthy of more than novelty status. Not every 16-year-old Caucasian, English girl can hang with the likes of Betty Wright ("Clean Up Woman") and Angie Stone (no relation). Wisely avoiding iconic songs by the genre's biggest names, Stone and a production team that includes Wright opt for lesser-known tunes by the likes of Laura Lee, Joe Simon and the Soul Brothers Six-not to mention their digging out (with guest coproducer ?uestlove from the Roots) the great soul lyric in the White Stripes' "Fell in Love with a (Boy)". Joss Stone occasionally misses a connection; her "Some Kind of Wonderful" is listless and when she develops a bit more subtlety, it'll be welcome. Review Come with Us / Chemical Brothers:If anyone's suffering from new-year blues, Come With Us will shake them out of their narcolepsy. This fantastic album roars out of the starting blocks like a supercharged dragster, blowing up a heady fume of hip-hop techno flavoured with the Chemical's new found post-rave happiness. Their fourth album shows all the passion of their earlier works coupled with a sophistication beyond the mere wish to knock people's musical heads off. Impressively after over six years of making music and touring they've lost none of their enthusiasm. In fact their longevity seems to inspire them to greater achievement in a field that traditionally feeds off the new, the novel and the young. Best of all, the Brothers have developed the ability to communicate heartfelt emotions, evident on tracks such as the Beth Orton sung "The State We're In", the Pink Floyd-like "Pioneer Skies" and magnificent album closer "The Test". That doesn't mean that there aren't the "traditional" Chemical Brothers' dancefloor killers. The opener and title track "Come With Us" is easily the pulsating equal of "Hey Boy Hey Girl" or 1995's "Block Rockin' Beats". Both already released singles, the bizarre "It Began in Afrika" and the Donna Summer-meets-Kraftwerk blur of "Star Guitar" are included in their original form. Review The Annual Vol.2 / Various Artists:When two of the UK's leading DJs get together to play the cream of dance music from 1996, it's a recipe for success. Disc One features Pete Tong's favourite tunes from the year, and demonstrates his exceptional taste: there's Stretch 'n' Vern's "I'm Alive" mixed by Fatboy Slim and "Insomnia" by Faithless, but best is the huge dancefloor anthem "Professional Widow" by Tori Amos, remixed by Armand Van Helden. Tong's style and taste are uplifting and funky, with a slightly harder edge than Boy George, who mixes Disc Two. Kicking things off with the Prodigy, he slips neatly into the Underworld classic, "Born Slippy. " After that, the feel becomes more Hardcore Handbag as he throws "Pulse" featuring Antoinette Robeson, "The Lover That You Are", E-Voke's "Arms Of Loren" and Manky's "Believe In Me" into the mix. -Carina Trimingham.
