Review Janet. / Janet Jackson:Up until this point in her career Janet Jackson had been the good little girl of the family Jackson. 1993's Janet is where she gets all grown up and sexy-gone are the days of "Let's Wait a While", replaced instead by tracks chronicling the joys of being able to "boom boom boom until noon noon noon" ("Throb"). Janet contains something for everyone, from the huge-scale epic "Back" (with orchestral and operatic backing!) to poppier offerings such as "That's the Way Love Goes" and "Because of Love"; from the mushy ballads which she does so well ("Again") to the dance grooves which have you picturing synchronised dance routines in your head ("You Want This", "If"); and she even has a vague stab at folk on "What'll I Do". Janet co-wrote and produced the entire album with long-time collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and it features a handful of hits, as well as even more of the between-song interludes of which she has always been so fond. Review GREATEST HITS / WHITNEY HOUSTON:For an artist who only released four proper albums in a 15-year career, it's astounding to recall how many hits Whitney Houston was able to achieve. The two CDs on Greatest Hits track Houston's rise from mid-1980s hit machine balladeer to standard-setting diva. Disc 1, CoolDown, runs chronologically through Houston's down-tempo love songs, from "Saving All My Love For You" and "I Will Always Love You" to the cleverly conceived new duet with Deborah Cox, "Same Script, Different Cast". She's also showcased as the remixee of choice for DJs on the second disc, Throw Down, which serves as the antidote to the lovesick first disc. Calling in marquee mix masters, Houston's old-shoe tunes get a new millennium polish. "My Love Is Your Love", reinterpreted by Jonathan Peters, captures the versatility of Houston's songs by making the downbeats danceable without going totally Euro-cheese. In contrast, Junior Vasquez's remix of 1985's "How Will I Know" pokes fun at the song's 1980s fluffiness by layering in bells, lasers effects, and echoes on top of Whitney's enthusiastic vocals. -Heidi Sherman.

Review Breathless / Kenny G:Like its predecessors, Kenny G's Breathless is a collection of tuneful, easy-listening instrumentals baited with a couple of pop-soul vocal numbers. This album is built on Kenny G's most obvious strengths: his knack for writing hummable pop hooks and his ability to play those radio-friendly melodies in a breathy, fluid style that invites the listener to lie back and relax. When it comes to background music that's slightly catchier and peppier than most new age music, Kenny G is a master of his genre. The titles of Kenny G's instrumentals on are a good clue to his approach: "Sentimental", "The Joy of Life", "Forever in Love" and "The Wedding Song". Sentimental, in the sense of simplifying life to a set of comfortable feelings, is a good adjective for Kenny G's music, for even his wordless instrumentals push the listener's warm glow buttons while ignoring anything more complicated. The saxophonist himself programmed many of the drum, bass and keyboard parts on Breathless, contributing to the sense that everything's running on autopilot. -Geoffrey Himes.
