Review Vespertine / Bjork:

Björk originally intended to call Vespertine Domestika. The title would have been entirely appropriate (as, indeed, is Vespertine, meaning "pertaining to the evening"). Ever since 1993's vital, effusive Debut, Björk's music has been increasingly intimate, gently private and concerned with seclusion. It's typical then that Vespertine's first single was called "Hidden Place". The studious solitude is rewarding, though. Vespertine is a lush, gorgeous swell of mid-pace electronica, symphonic strings and Björk's uniquely alien, spectral vocal. There are fantastical wonders here. "Cocoon" (another eulogy to withdrawal from the world) is delicate as a breath, Björk sounding too fragile to be flesh as she lauds "a beauty this immense". "Pagan Poetry" and "Aurora", likewise, are adrift in an enchanted reverie. When she chooses, she crafts killer tunes: "It's Not up to You" is as lovely as anything on Post. [+]
Yet frequently, on such tracks as the yearning, glancing "Undo", Björk seems to be simply thinking aloud, revelling in this wildly rich and visceral music. She's reclaimed cutting-edge electronica, so often the province of geeks and technicians, for the poets and the passionate. Vespertine is a landmark, a revelation, a truly fabulous achievement. -Ian Gittins.

Review Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury / The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy:

Although this group is long defunct, its one major recording will be fondly remembered for years-if not decades-to come. The Heroes consisted of rapper Michael Franti and percussionist Ron Tse; together, the San Francisco Bay area-based duo created a biting, politically savvy record that touched on both personal vulnerability and governmental venality. Franti used the microphone to preach about injustice, homophobia, materialism, and apathy. Although Public Enemy had long before established hip-hop's political potential, they never quite attained Franti's ability to translate black rage into universal themes. In the Heroes' best number, "Television, the Drug of the Nation," Franti raps, "Imagination is sucked out of our children by a cathode ray nipple / Television is the only wet-nurse that would create a cripple. " Unfortunately, after extensive touring, the pair went their separate ways, Tse to a variety of solo projects and Franti to Spearhead. -Martin Johnson.

Review Eminem Presents The Re-Up / Eminem:

What began life as an informal street mix-tape project to help launch fledgling Shady Records artists (Stat Quo, Ca$his, Bobby Creekwater, Obie Trice and producer The Alchemist) has now become an official release. Flowing fairly randomly from track to track, the project, perhaps surprisingly for such a high profile outing, retains its original mixtape vibe. It's a thuggish and sluggish affair, led by Alchemist's somber, strong-arm beats (with additional production from Dr. Dre amd Kon Artis), and inhabited by a varied range of voices, from the Shady Records artists previously mentioned to Eminem himself (on half a dozen tracks), and appearances from 50 Cent, the recently slain Proof, and others from the G Unit crew. With so many cuts at the same tempo and with the same moody aura, it can all start to wear a little in places. Indeed, with such a wealth of up and coming talent and established personnel at work, there really ought to be more stand-outs. As it is, we get perhaps six killers (including Eminem-led cuts, 'The Re-Up' and 'Jimmy Crack Corn'), a disproportionate amount of fillers, and a mixtape/album that - just about - leaves a vaguely positive impression. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Actually / Pet Shop Boys:

Released at the height of their popularity and during the Thatcher / Lawson economic boom year of 1987, Actually is as much a pop commentary on the state of late-1980s Britain as a showcase of the Pet Shop Boys' unique ability to mix miserabalism with disco. Tracks such as "Shopping", "Rent" and "King's Cross" paint a picture of an urban way of life, which is increasingly becoming market-orientated. Their collaboration with composer Ennio Morricone, and the title track to their surreal, self-indulgent film "It Couldn't Happen Here" incorporates understated lyrics with soaring orchestration. The overall style of Actually is best summed up by the chart-topping track "It's a Sin", which merges Tennant's angry autobiographical lyrics / vocals-focused on his own schoolboy anxieties around sexuality-with an up-tempo, Euro-disco beat. In true post-modern style (which was the "in" thing with the chattering classes of 1987), Actually gracefully mixes old with new. The Further Listening Disc (1987-1988) includes three previously unreleased tracks, the most notable being a re-mixed version of "Heart" by ace 80s mix supremo Shep Pettibone (the other unreleased tracks are "I Want To Wake Up" (Breakdown Mix) and the 7" mix of "One More Chance"). Also included are the excellent B-sides "I Want a Dog2" (from the single "Rent") and "A New Life" (from "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"). -John Galilee.

Review Brand New Second Hand / Roots Manuva:

For a long time, it seemed like any sort of hip-hop that came from Great Britain was immediately labelled "trip-hop. " But it's impossible to pigeonhole crews like Black Twang and London rapper Roots Manuva into that category-and sometimes it's tough to slot Roots Manuva into any category. Unfortunately, the production on this album is spotty, veering uncomfortably from the hopelessly fractured reggae of "Dem Phonies" to the live funk of "Fever". Roots Manuva's skills, though, are undeniable and he manoeuvres through tracks like "Big Things" and "Baptism" with a keen intellect and an impressive moral authority. His ragga-accented flow differs greatly from that of his American peers, though, and may prove to be an acquired taste for some. Flawed as it may be, Brand New Second Hand shows that international hip-hop need not mimic that of the States in order to compete-but it could take some lessons in the studio. -Justin Hampton.
