Review Blood on the Dancefloor / Michael Jackson:Containing eight remixed tracks from Jackson's 1995 HIStory, as well as five new compositions, Blood On The Dancefloor tastefully mixes old sounds with new. The new songs which open the album are led by the thrash-pop title track, which is reminiscent of many of the creations on Dangerous. "Morphine" is a dark and emotive track, while "Ghosts" and "Is It Scary" are autobiographical accounts of fatherhood and the problems of privacy which followed the birth of his baby. The disco remix of "Stranger In Moscow", meanwhile, is an excellent up-tempo remodelling of the original track. -John Galilee.

Review Happy Songs for Happy People / Mogwai:Scots avant-rockers Mogwai may never quite shake their reputation as determined sonic brutalists, but a spin of Happy Songs for Happy People demonstrates that they're no longer simply set on rendering the aural equivalent of being sucked out a spaceship airlock. Although always a democracy, previously, Stuart Braithwaite had taken on the role of Mogwai's bandleader-by-proxy, his tumultuous guitar roar the outfit's most obvious hallmark. Now, however, multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns appears to fulfil this role-albeit, with much more restraint-crooning effect-heavy vocals somewhere from the wispy heart of "Hunted By a Freak", teasing out a meditative piano line on the ghostly "I Know You Are But What Am I?". Indeed, more than any other Mogwai work, sheer bliss appears to be this album's singular aim: even the amp-busting crescendo of "Ratts of the Capital" matches its dark metal pomp with chiming orchestra bells and starburst lead-guitar lines. No sudden banjo interludes or no guest vocals jar with the album's slow passage towards its conclusion-and it's a fact that plants the fear that maybe Mogwai are all played out. True, it's hard to shake the feeling that they'll never again write something as monumental as Come On Die Young. But even revolving in their ever-tightening spiral, Mogwai sound lush and powerful. Review Third [VINYL] / Portishead:Portishead's Third has been a long time coming, the result of a lengthy creative topor following 1997's dark, distinctly underrated album Portishead. Importantly, though, they've shaken it. While the core trio of Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley remains, this is quite a different band to Portishead's 90s incarnation: gone is the slo-mo turntable scratching and smoky jazz feel, replaced by heavy, brooding rhythms, vintage-sounding electronics, and spindly guitar. Still present, though, is that sense of emotional fracture and deep gloom. "Silence" opens with a dense drum loop which suddenly falls away to reveal Gibbons' voice, cold but magnificent: "Wounded and afraid, inside my head/Falling through changes". "Nylon Smile", meanwhile, is a fine example of Third's occasional folksy edge, an acoustic song reminiscent of Leonard Cohen that, around its midpoint, lifts off on a propulsive electronic rhythm, Gibbons holding one clear, hard note as synthesisers bubble beneath. At times, it's a harsh and foreboding listen: the electronic drums of "Machine Gun" might put off the listener hoping for smooth dinner party fare. But Third is a brave and forward-thinking return, and one great enough to justify its lengthy gestation. -Louis Pattison.

Review Greatest Hits / Goldie Lookin Chain:They say humour and music shouldn't mix, but it seems no-one told leisurewear-clad Welsh rap octet Goldie Lookin' Chain: their Greatest Hits, a major-label compilation of the highlights of their last five self-released CD-Rs, is the rare comedy record that transcends its laugh-out-loud novelty. The gags they offer are seldom sophisticated - the presence of a song titled "Your Mother's Got A Penis" has probably already alerted you to that fact - but the jokes come thick and fast, and there's enough deft characterisation to leisurewear-clad GLC members Dwain Xain, Mr Love Eggs, and The Maggot to drag the likes of "Half-Man, Half-Machine" and "Soap Bar" into the realms of situation comedy. Many of their best ideas are stolen: UK Top 5 single "Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do" nabs a vocal hook from KRS-One's "Sound Of The Police", while "Self Suicide" makes a cheeky rip from '90s rap goths Gravediggaz. But for all the petty theft on show, the GLC aren't lacking in ideas. With the possible exception of the slimy R&B grind of "You Knows I Loves You" - which, of course, is meant to sound utterly, horribly sleazy - there's not a bad track here. -Louis Pattison.

Review Get Rich Or Die Tryin' / 50 Cent:Stabbed, shot, assaulted and now with a million-dollar record deal, 50 Cent lives up to the title of his latest album Get Rich or Die Trying. The New York native comes from the same school as B. I. G, Shine and Mobb Deep-a raw street rhymer who mixes the thug and poet in one perplexing package. 50 cent earned extra cred by coming up through mix-tape popularity after his first album was dropped when the ex-boxer was shot on the eve of its release. Guns, threats, drug deals and misogyny populate 50 Cent's outlaw world, but it's a popular mix-hence his recently sealed link with Eminem's record company. The excellent "Wanksta" was pulled onto the 8 Mile soundtrack and Dr Dre produced the crunching first single, "In Da Club". Jamaican Sean Paul puts his now familiar patter on the hypnotic "Dem Not Ready". "If You Want It" is a ridiculously rude party joint, while "Cocaine Dreams" takes a pop at Ja Rule. "Got the Hood on Smash" is, undoubtedly, damn funky. [+]Sadly his first single "How to Rob an Industry N***A" (reminiscent of B. I. G's equally scabrous "Dreams") doesn't appear. Review Technique / New Order:Technique is New Order's most fully realised dance album. Although other New Order albums have been mighty danceable, this recording contains a masterful use of the acid-house trends storming the club scene in 1989, when this album was released. New Order embraced the technology that was available at the time but never substituted brilliant song structures with prefabricated formats that sequencers, samplers, and other high-tech noisemakers can easily provide.
