Review Happiness / Beloved:Among the first wave of British indie bands to trade in their tunnel- vision guitars for a more expansive dance sound after the acid house revolution, The Beloved were well ahead of the pack in their new direction. Jon Marsh's inspired use of Balearic beats, house synthesisers and lush harmonics are welded together by subtle guitars Not for nothing has "The Sun Rising", all glistening keyboards, backwards guitar and dazed, ethereal vocals, achieved near-mythical status. This is the sound of a craftsman taking the simplistic acid motif and honing it, decorating it, trying to make the perfect indie-dance hybrid and succeeding nearly every time. The daisy age lyrical gloss is never too syrupy; the hippy sentiments are more loved-up than cracked up and make this feel-good album feel even better. All that and they even manage to rhyme "Jean-Paul Sartre" with "Jeffrey Archer". -Ben Clancy.

Review Xtrmntr / Primal Scream:It's seldom that a band's sixth album is their best, but Exterminator is nothing less than a radical new dawn. Only a few years before, Primal Scream seemed spent-a smack-addled joke, numbing the pain with the idle comfort of rock & roll cliché. Exterminator is the Scream's baptism of fire-an album with a righteous social conscience, it rages against apathy and injustice with all the funk-fuelled indignation of Sly & The Family Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On. Musically, too, Exterminator is shackled together with a coherence that's eluded them since 1991. From the tense industrial trance of "Swastika Eyes", to the scurvy-thin hip-hop of "Pills" and the exultant Krautrock of "Shoot Speed Kill Light", one minute the 'Scream are diseased and desperate, the next they're basking in glorious, righteous euphoria. Thank the guests, certainly-the Chemical Brothers, New Order's Bernard Sumner, My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields-but when you hear Bobby Gillespie screaming "from here to where?", on the hyper-distorted pedal-to-the-metal drag-race of "Accelerator", you'll know he's the one with the road map to a terrific rock & roll future. -Louis Pattison.

Review To All New Arrivals / Faithless:Faithless's fifth studio album, To All New Arrivals, is a tribute of sorts to the brand new babies that band-members Rollo and Sister Bliss recently (and separately) brought into the world. Lead single "Bombs", with its chugging, understated beat, social analysis and decidedly anti-war stance, makes for an impressive start. From there the album gets a little bogged down in the rose-tinted sentimentality of 'new parent' syndrome. "Spiders, Crocodiles and Kryptonite" has someone uttering childish inanities in a silly voice (its saved by an extended segment of the Cure's "Lullaby" - but only just); the uplifting "Music Matters" (with Cass Fox) is marred by mawkish lyrics; "I Hope" offers similarly trite messages of parental hope, and the title track plots sounds like a song for Children In Need. All this is doubtless well meant, but comes across as naïve, even vacuous in places. Fortunately the music fares better. Aside from the wishy-washy "Last This Day" (with Dido) and the nondescript "Nate's Tune," the robust "Hope & Glory", the wonderful "A Kind Of Peace" (with Cat Power), the catchy "The Man In You" and the bristling finale, "Emergency", show that Faithless are still capable of writing rousing club sounds. -Paul Sullivan.

Review People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm / Tribe Called Quest:People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is, quite simply, one of the finest albums in hip-hop. It's easy to argue that A Tribe Called Quest reached their zenith on this, their debut album: though they went on to produce another world-class disc (The Low End Theory) and broadened their palates and their consciousness, never again were they quite this naturally free and easy. Q-Tip and Phife's delivery is deceptively simple, flowing like wine and tasting like candy, and Jairobi adds some contrast. The music, so self-assured that it never raises its voice to make a spectacle, follows suit. Four albums later, on their last tour, songs from Paths of Rhythm still were at the top of the set list. -Randy Silver.

Review Eternal : Greatest Hits / Eternal:In the 1960s, Veronica and Estelle Bennett were the queens of girl group pop as leaders of the Ronettes. In the 1990s, Vernie and Easther Bennett led Eternal as the new girl pop queens. An uncanny coincidence and one worth bearing in mind when looking at the classic lineage of Eternal's fully-formed work. Their career was quite short, but they burned brightly all the way, leaving no room for mistakes or fillers. This greatest hits, then, is the very best of the best. They swing, they smooch and they seduce through a body of work that is made for the chart parade. Soulful solidarity and sisterhood is their gospel and no-nonsense pop grooves their playground. The feel-good factor runs high in Eternal and these stone-cold classics are made to last for eternity. It's lightweight commercial music with that added special dimension that makes these songs last the distance. -Ben Clancy.

Review #1's / Mariah Carey:Mariah Carey's #1's is as much a time capsule of 1990s pop and R&B as a record of one woman's chart toppers: the disc chronicles a shift from the sweet, nearly '50s-style "Vision of Love" to more recent hip-hop-lite grooves featuring heavy input from Puffy Combs ("Honey"), Jermaine Dupri ("Sweetheart"), and O. D. B. ("Fantasy"). Some hit, some miss, but all feature the fluttery swoops that Carey substitutes for expression of feeling. Depth is beside the point, but few of these tracks are even fun. Still, after eight years, there seems to be no stopping her, and this album will hardly break her streak of successes. -Rickey Wright.
