Review Yo! Bum Rush The Show / Public Enemy:With Yo! Bum Rush the Show, Public Enemy introduce a new kind of bravado that's not just directed at other players and sucker MCs but is an out-and-out middle-finger challenge to the whole world, as these serious brothers roll right over you in a slow-moving convoy of '98 Oldsmobiles ("You're Gonna Get Yours"). PE crowd these tracks with disparate sounds that move your butt while they buzz from every channel. Despite their serious posturing, you'll be grateful for the sloppy bass line in "Timebomb" and Terminator X's brilliant tone experiment, "Public Enemy No. 1". Yo! isn't PE's masterpiece, but it's a truly standout album, a warning shot for the full-scale assault they would later initiate on It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. -Todd Levin.

Review Baby One More Time / Britney Spears:17 at the time of this release, Louisiana's teen dream Britney Spears works her guts out for every vowel and yearning growl on this impeccable slice of middle America. Partly produced from the same stable as the Backstreet Boys, Britney's songs have a strange, submissive twist: the full title of the mind-blowing debut single should be "Hit Me Baby One More Time. " Obviously "Hit"'s got an okay slang meaning now but the song and much of the mood of this album strikes a direct line to the Ronette's "He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss" in its desperate need to keep a boy by her side. Britney may be the young front for some middle-age money-makers but that's beside the point. She puts her life into this record; whether you like her teen pop or not, that dedication cannot be ignored. -Charlie Porter.

Review 28 Days Later / Original Soundtrack:The soundtrack to Danny Boyle's end-of-the-world flick 28 Days Later is as bleak as you might expect from a film that involves deranged, blood-spewing zombies and the destruction of modern civilisation as we know it. While there are a few "names" here-in the shape of American power-pop band Grandaddy, ambient pioneer Brian Eno and dance producer Blue States-the majority of this record consists of John Murphy's original cinematic score. The music owes a little to Eno's darker musical experiments and a great deal to the strangely beautiful doomscapes practised by fiercely anti-corporate Montreal-based orchestral group Godspeed You Black Emperor (whose music actually appears in the film, but never makes it as far as the soundtrack album). Walls of bleak but elegiac feedback and avalanche drums rolls are separated by caustic drones and passages of eerie near-silence. This dark drama is somewhat relieved by stark, choir-sung interludes that add a religious, redemptive feeling and by the occasional foray into crystal-clear electronica. Danny Boyle also directed Trainspotting, but you won't be able to file this next to that film's OST in the pop section of your music shelf. However, fans of a darker, more cinematic sound will be well-served by this chilling record. -Louis Pattison.

Review Equinoxe / Jean-Michel Jarre:As the follow up album to Oxygene, Equinoxe offers the same mesmerising affect, with rapid spinning sequencer washes and bubbling synthesizer portions all lilting back and forth to stardust scatterings of electronic pastiches. Using more than 13 different types of synthesizers, Jarre combines whirling soundscapes of multi-textured effects, passages, and sometimes suites to culminate interesting electronic atmospheres. Never repeating the same sounds twice, it is obvious that the science fiction hype of the late 70's played a large part in the making of this album. Computerised rhythms and keyboard-soaked transitions scurry by, replaced by even quicker, more illustrious ones soon after. There is always a pulsating beat or a fluttering tempo happening somewhere in each of the tracks, which are titled as a numbered sequence one to eight. Each track harbours its own energy and electronic fleetness, but none are identical in sound or pace. So much electronic colour is added to every track that it is impossible to concentrate on any particular segment, resulting in waves of synth drowning the ears at high tide. -Mike DeGagne, All Music Guide.

Review 200 km/h In The Wrong Lane / T.A.T.U.:Two comely teenage lesbian lovers from Russia who happen to sing? That seems more like a marketing masterstroke than pop music likelihood, so it's fair to question the authenticity of t. A. T. u. 's English language debut 200 Km/h in the Wrong Lane. It's impossible to know where t. A. T. u. 's talent begins and ends and just how much influence their various handlers and producer Trevor Horn had over the record but it's probably a moot point to the intended demographic. [+]
Horn's background working with electro-pop dandies Pet Shop Boys and Frankie Goes to Hollywood is evident in the crisp, driving synth cushioning singers Lena Katina and Julia Volkova's gossamer vocals. Wink-nudge lyrical references to girls loving girls-presented in serviceable if phonetic English-are in evidence, though they're more coy than graphic. "All the Things She Said", a sparkly, chorus-driven rave-up, seems to make the case for sexual equality, while "Show Me Love" (which appears in regular and extended versions) is a dancefloor missive aimed straight at the clubs. Best, though is an unintentionally ironic cover of the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now". The song, a benchmark of loneliness and hopelessness, is utterly transformed into a chirpy duet which, all things considered, may be the best gimmick of all. -Kim Hughes.

Review 30 Something / Carter USM:South London duo Carter USM combined an every-man appeal and a political idealism reminiscent of The Clash with a seamless cohesion of synthesised percussion, roaring post-punk riffs and razor-sharp, pun-drenched lyrics and 30 Something is their ultimate statement. As vocalist Jim Bob's fiery social conscience gets to grips with such burning issues as racial prejudice in the armed forces ("Bloodsport For All") and spousal abuse ("Sealed With A Glasgow Kiss"), Fruitbat's digitised wall-of-sound and heroic guitar assaults mercilessly steamroller the listener into submission. But the quality that most endeared Carter to their enormous UK fan-base was their uncanny ability to reflect the punch-drunk melancholia of the urban underdog. The bittersweet wallowing of "A Prince In A Pauper's Grave", the sorrowful regret of "Falling On A Bruise" and the ultimate dejection of "The Final Comedown" are quite simply towering, evocative genius. Way beyond essential, 30 Something is a 24-carat masterpiece. -Ian Fortnam.
