Review Things to Make and Do / Moloko:Prior to "Sing It Back" being remixed into an Ibizan pant-swinging classic, Mark Brydon and Roisin Murphy were, of course, best known for being the acceptable face of comedy trip-hop. Therefore, anyone expecting Things To Make And Do to be full of handbag-circling, dancefloor stormers is in for a bit of a shock. You see, Moloko are an experimental pop band and not the disco stalwarts their success implies. Unfortunately, this often involves being as irritating as possible. Take "Indigo" for instance, a song so lyrically unhinged it makes "Lily The Pink" seem profound; or the snappily titled "If You Have A Cross To Bear You Might As Well Use It As A Crutch"-an anarchic showdown between Gilbert & Sullivan and Joy Division that's just plain daft. Murphy's voice still resonates like a loved-up Fenella Fielding-all trembling operetta meets pussy-cat growl, but Brydon's rhythmic quirks and off-kilter sounds are perfunctory, often bordering on the puerile. It's not all bad: "Absent Minded Friends" sounds rich and sentimental, while the languid bossa vibe drifting through "Being Is Believing" is Kate Bush in all but name. Ultimately though, the faults here far outweigh the virtues. -Paul Tierney.

Review In Silico (Special Edition) / Pendulum:In Silico might be the second album from Pendulum, but it's their first as a fully-fledged rock band. Of course, this Australian dance collective have paddled in these waters before: their debut album Hold Your Colour was a muscular collection of hard drum'n'bass and slamming breakbeats that, for all its synthetic construction, displayed firmly rock sensibilities. On In Silico, though, hard-riffing guitars are pulled right up in the mix, and the band's production core, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, lead from the front, reaching for the microphone and making clattering loops the bedrock for a suite of anthemic rockers. Comparisons to the likes of Enter Shikari and The Prodigy are not too wide of the mark, capturing something of Pendulum's fairground waltzer adrenaline and polished, metallic aggression. Beyond straightforward rush, though, some interesting ingredients find their way into the brew: storming opener "Slowdown" imagines an unholy synthesis of DJ Hype and Muse in full progressive rock-out mode, while the elegiac "Propane Nightmares" commences with a Mariachi trumpet serenade. Dance connoisseurs will probably complain Pendulum's beats lack a certain finesse, but if you like your dance music a) fast and b) hard then In Silico has all bases covered. -Louis Pattison.

Review The Essential Sly and the Family Stone / Sly Stone:Long before Michael Jackson and Prince became superstars by fusing rhythmic soul with rock's sense of scale and ambition, a former northern California deejay and producer named Sylvester Stewart took the vaunted musical utopianism of the 60s and forged it into the cross-cultural, ass-shaking, genre-bending groove monster that was Sly and the Family Stone. James Brown may have invented funk, but S&TFS masterfully tooled and supercharged it into mass-acceptance. No mere greatest hits collection (though they're all here in digitally remastered glory), this 35-track, double-disc anthology delves deeper into the handful of seminal albums the band produced before its leaders' long, troubling slide into drug abuse and oblivion. Given the chronological development, there's a sense here that Stewart/Stone's problems paralleled the increasingly militant and hard-edged stance the band took on albums like the uncompromising classic There's a Riot Going On. Propelled by Larry Graham's locomotive bass lines and accented by rousing horns, Sly and company swooped from the heights of 1969's hit-laden "Stand" towards a darker and more unsettling decade ahead.
