Review Singles 1993-2003 / Chemical Brothers:To remain relevant after a decade in the music industry is rare indeed; for a dance act, it's virtually unique. Singles 93-03 ably demonstrates how the Chemical Brothers have managed it. Having first carved a reputation as DJs the Dust Brothers in the early 1990s, the two home-counties history graduates narrowly avoided calling themselves the London Dust Explosion before spearheading big beat, becoming a huge live draw, collaborating with Noel Gallagher and having Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis play "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" at his wedding. It's been 10 years of fun, frolics and gigantean left-field beats for Ed Simmons and Tom Rowland and, as this faultless singles collection testifies, continual reinvention. From the seething siren, pounding breaks, breathy vocals and spellbinding post-acid electronica of album opener "Song to the Siren" to the ingenious collaboration with the Flaming Lips, "The Golden Path", Tom 'n' Ed have somehow managed to carve tracks that appeal equally to radio, clubs and the live arena. Alongside the cement-cracking bass of "Leave Home" and "Block Rockin' Beats" comes the high-inducing sonic debauchery of "The Private Psychedelic Reel" and dancefloor filler "Star Guitar", to name but a few of the many highlights. Ingenious, boundary-baffling stuff, this compilation offers a hypnotic historical tour of one of the most creative careers in dance music. -Christopher Barrett.

Review The Mirror Conspiracy / Thievery Corporation:Washington's finest purveyors of hazy downbeat soundscapes have already produced two stoned classics with Sounds from The Thievery H-Fi (4AD) and their DJ Kicks mix on K7! Records. Their latest longplayer walks to the same tempo but with an overall more purposeful musical strut. It's organic for a start, with live vocals and sounds, trading in the slightly sullen slow-mo digi-dub for a more refined and soulful brand of chic. Check the breathless beauty of Marla's voice on "La Monde" and "So Com Voce" as she floats into the spaces left empty on previous Thievery encounters. They manage to wring every half-drop of their main musical influences (dub, soundtracks and bossa) into this beautiful record as it sinks into deep waters, oozing sophistication all the way down. Perfect accompaniment when too spannered to dance, this contains the added bonus of jazzual jungle finale, "Tomorrow" to liven you up from contented slumber just before the CD ends. Sweet like syrup, not chocolate. -Dan Stacey.

Review Encore / Eminem:Marshall Mathers has always delighted in confounding expectations, so we should have guessed he'd respond to the title Most Important Artist Of His Generation with Encore - an album peppered with puerile humour, myriad references to his past career, and plenty of farts, burps and vomiting. Thankfully, even Slim Shady on a bad day can be a fairly mighty proposition: the seething "Mosh" is a rare moment of high seriousness-a trudging anti-Bush epic in the vein of "White America" that positively vibrates with bile - while the skittery "My 1st Single" proves that Mathers can be engaging even when he's rapping about basically nothing. The key to understanding Encore is through its pursuit of sheer offensiveness for offence's sake, be it the comic accent on "Ass Like That", or the relentless gay jibes of "Rain Man" - all of which seem to be more about prodding the hornet's nest of controversy that any genuine prejudice. Still, it's occasionally hard to escape that there's a certain weariness to Em's delivery, an impression that sometimes extends to the arrangements - see "Like Toy Soldiers", a jaundiced account of rap feuding, rendered unnecessarily corny by a sample of "Toy Soldiers" by '80s two-hit wonder Martika. -Louis Pattison.

Review James Brown Live At The Apollo, 1962 / James Brown & The Famous Flames The James Brown Band:Thank God someone thought to record the Godfather in concert at this vital stage of his career-and at the ultimate shrine of black American music to boot. There is no more exciting document of live performance in the history of R&B: powered by tireless drummer Clayton Fillyau, James Brown and the Famous Flames tear their way through a slew of King hits-from "Please, Please, Please" to "Night Train"-taking soul power to the very edge of gospel abandon in the process. The Apollo audience, hysterical with adulation, plays as big a part in Live at the Apollo as Brown himself. The shrieking build-up and sudden drop down into "Lost Someone" is one of the most heart-stopping moments in soul. -Barney Hoskyns.

Review Hotter Than July / Stevie Wonder:By the time Hotter Than July was released, in 1980, Stevie Wonder's most fertile period was already over. The smash run that began 1972 (Music of My Mind and Talking Book) and ran through Innervisions (1973), Fulfullingness' First Finale (1974) and 1976's Songs in the Key of Life was winding down. There was still enough magic left in Wonder for one last hurrah, however-and while July isn't its forerunner's equal in the heights it scales or consistency, it's still bears the marks of Wonder's best work: there's the regretful "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It", the reggae-crossover "Master Blaster (Jammin')", an oft-imitated classic (see Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives", for one); and the enormously successful paean to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , "Happy Birthday". -Randy Silver.
