Review My Life / Mary J. Blige:

During one of the "interludes" on My Life, Keith Murray is rapping about "Grab your cranium for my ultimatum", when someone in the studio control booth asks producer Chucky Thompson, "Hey, Chuck, put on some of that smooth [stuff]". Murray disappears; the dreamy synth chords of Blige's title track emerge, and her sultry voice moans with a combination of weary loneliness and unslaked desire. The ballad which follows is "smooth" but never slick, for the singer's sinuous, extended notes confess the blues even as they yearn for something better. It's tempting to see this little scenario-the rapper being turned off in favour of the soul diva-as a repudiation of hip-hop in favour of old-fashioned R&B. An honest listen-to-this album, however, makes such an interpretation impossible. Blige does no actual rapping herself on her long-awaited second outing, but the sound of "My Life" would have been impossible without hip-hop. The results confirm the promise of Blige's '92 debut; she is the premier soul diva of the hip-hop generation. -Geoffrey Himes.

Review The Very Best Of Marvin Gaye / Marvin Gaye:

The Very Best of Marvin Gaye pulls together the usual hits from "I'll Be Doggone" to "Grapevine", "What's Going On" to "Let's Get It On" to "Sexual Healing"-all musts for any R&B or pop fan-but this two-CD set also offers treats for the Marvin connoisseur. Foremost are the previously unreleased "Where Are We Going?" which marries Nixon-era (and beyond) social concerns to a lilting groove that brings to mind Spinners records of the period, and an alternate mix of Gaye's rare version of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow". Very Best also pays proper tribute to Gaye's final years at Motown with the full 11-plus minutes of the intense, casually funky "Got to Give It Up", Here, My Dear's smoldering "Anger" and several tracks from the under-heard Love Man / In Our Lifetime sessions. More than just a profit-generating package from the parent company, it's a loving, rounded selection that's sure to widen newcomers' perceptions of a great artist's creativity and spirit. -Rickey Wright.

Review Soul II Soul Vol.4 - the Classic Singles 1988-1993 / Soul II Soul:

Take the sweet soul vocals of Caron Wheeler. Add jazzy hip-hop beats and early Balearic rhythms. Mix with one of the most influential producers of the decade, Nellee Hooper, and pour through the musical uber-talent of Jazzie B. The result is Soul II Soul's seminal sound. Soul II Soul Vol 4 - the Classic Singles 1988-1993 is a greatest-hits album that contains "Keep On Movin'" and the phenomenal "Back To Life". This is exceptional and innovative music whose rough edge keeps it fresh. -Ed Potton.

Review Vespertine / Bjork:

Björk originally intended to call Vespertine Domestika. The title would have been entirely appropriate (as, indeed, is Vespertine, meaning "pertaining to the evening"). Ever since 1993's vital, effusive Debut, Björk's music has been increasingly intimate, gently private and concerned with seclusion. It's typical then that Vespertine's first single was called "Hidden Place". The studious solitude is rewarding, though. Vespertine is a lush, gorgeous swell of mid-pace electronica, symphonic strings and Björk's uniquely alien, spectral vocal. There are fantastical wonders here. "Cocoon" (another eulogy to withdrawal from the world) is delicate as a breath, Björk sounding too fragile to be flesh as she lauds "a beauty this immense". "Pagan Poetry" and "Aurora", likewise, are adrift in an enchanted reverie. When she chooses, she crafts killer tunes: "It's Not up to You" is as lovely as anything on Post. [+]
Yet frequently, on such tracks as the yearning, glancing "Undo", Björk seems to be simply thinking aloud, revelling in this wildly rich and visceral music. She's reclaimed cutting-edge electronica, so often the province of geeks and technicians, for the poets and the passionate. Vespertine is a landmark, a revelation, a truly fabulous achievement. -Ian Gittins.

Review 1989-2002 From There to Here / Brian McKnight:

In addition to candles, white wine and a brand new roll of toilet paper, every bachelor pad should be equipped with a Brian McKnight CD. Conveniently, his 1989-2002: From There to Here greatest-hits collection provides one-stop shopping of the sexiest, smoochiest ballads known to humankind. McKnight may be guilty of excessive sentimentality but damn if he can't sing, and even his most saccharine moments are redeemed by his buttery vocals and absolute earnestness. Two new songs-"Let Me Love You" and "The Way I Do"-bookend the collection, but what's in between has put the Buffalo native on the R&B map, chiefly, his gorgeous cover of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love," and his plaintive duet with Vanessa Williams on "Love Is. " Indeed, there's abundant love on offer and McKnight-who also wrote, played and/or produced these various songs-has given the booty call its most sumptuous soundtrack. -Kim Hughes.

Review Here Come the Warm Jets / Brian Eno:

In 1973, fed up with Bryan Ferry's domineering in Roxy Music, Eno leapt into a solo career that would find him championing the "art" in "artifice". This record is a who's who of the then-burgeoning English art-rock scene, featuring Robert Wyatt, Robert Fripp, and every member of Roxy Music except its leader (thus answering the musical question, "What if Eno had helmed the third Roxy record instead of Ferry?"). Warm Jets sports a lightheartedness that was a refreshing antidote to the pomposity of Yes and ELP on the dark side of art-rock's spectrum, with nonsensical, sound-based couplets such as "Oh headless chicken / How can those teeth stand so much kicking?" Listen to Fripp's furious guitars on "Baby's On Fire" and "Blank Frank": it's incredible, Velvet Underground-inspired rock in a scene that had forgotten what rocking meant. -Gene Booth.

Review Healing Is Difficult / Sia:

Australia is not known as the home of genre defining R&B artists. Which is probably why Australian born Sia (pronounced See-ah) has managed, in her debut album Healing Is Difficult, to avoid all the usual cliché's, generic soul diva hang-ups and slickly sanitised production, and come up with the most imaginative set of tunes since Lauryn Hill's Miseducation. Not that she sounds anything like Hill, but her melding of hip-hop beats, stripped down funk grooves and enchanting melodies is just as sublime. Her captivating and quirky voice aside, Sia's natural talent lies in her flea market, mix and match attitude; marrying the rootsy beats; and jazz grooves that underpin tracks with things that shouldn't fit-Branford Marsalis styled soprano sax flurries ("Drink to Get Drunk"), the majestic orchestral march of Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet ("Single Taken For Granted") and lilting reggae/dub grooves ("Get Me", "Insidiously" and "Fear"). Over these stray sounds she slides her supremely sexy vocals, reeling off shopping lists of emotions, fears and relationships that are as humorous as they are touching, as childish as they are wise and as innocent as they are darkly twisted. It's a bizarrely brilliant mix-from a bizarrely brilliant imagination-that puts Sia and her inspired debut in an R&B class of its own. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Greatest Hits / Bjork:

Compiled via a fan survey conducted on her Web site, Björk's Greatest Hits eschews presenting the tracks in chronological order, making for a jumbled ride through the vocalist's unique, twisted and frequently brilliant discography. A few welcome surprises surface, including EP remixes, a rarity (the 1993 David Arnold collaboration "Play Dead") and the previously unreleased "It's in Our Hands," a clever blip-pop number that would have fit nicely on either 1997's Homogenic or 2001's Vespertine. Starting off with a dreamy remix of "All Is Full of Love", the collection contrasts giddy dance-pop such as "Hyperballad" (from the wonderful Post) with the brooding thump of "Army of Me" and Debut's "Human Behaviour", while injecting liberal doses of experimental ballads such as "Joga" and "Pagan Poetry". Some choices will grate on the nerves of purists (the sans strings mix of "Hyperballad"), and it would have been nice to hear something from Selmasongs, but with Björk's incredibly consistent discography to work from, it's impossible to screw up a retrospective compilation such as this. -Matthew Cooke.

Review Reasonable Doubt / Jay-Z:

Best-known-and reviled, by many hardcore headz-as the man who set a rap to a tune from Annie, that notorious tale of life in the 'hood ("Hard Knock Life"), Jay-Z clearly decided some time ago that amassing the Benjamins came before keeping it real, in the greater scheme of things. Still, even his harshest critics might be somewhat placated by the re-issue of this, his first album, which sees a tougher, more worldly MC than on anything that followed it. The late Notorious B. I. G. guests on "Brooklyn's Finest"-a torrent of lazy, boastful braggadocio-while Foxy Brown, feisty as ever, lends her distinctive presence to "Ain't No Nigga". And while his sleepy, monotonal vocal style will never place him within the first rank of MCs, his eye for detail is often surprisingly acute, lending many of these vignettes a chilling verisimilitude. -Andrew McGuire.
