Review Greatest Hits / Take That:

The definitive 1990s boyband, Take That may have set the blueprint for a million copycat groups since-Five, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys-but they had an all-important advantage right from the start: bucketloads of fantastic pop songs. In terms of sheer quantity alone, their chart successes racked up more sales than any other British artist since the Beatles, and this Greatest Hits package has them all, including "Relight My Fire", "Back For Good" and "Pray", spanning an impressive eight number ones in five years. From the hi-energy rush of "It Only Takes A Minute Girl" to the smoochy "A Million Love Songs" to Mark Owen's heartfelt rendition of "Babe", it is a well-trodden wander down memory lane, but the impeccably polished production and Barlow's relentless ear for a catchy tune ensure it's a highly entertaining one. -Amber Cowan.

Review The Very Best of UB40 / UB40:

Few things in life are as reliable as UB40. For more than 20 years the eight Birmingham lads, led by brothers Robin and Ali (the one with the odd voice) Campbell, have been plying their very individual, and very British brand of reggae. And, save for a slight shift from the rootsy Ska of their first top-10 single, "King/Food For Thought", to the more commercial likes of "Homely Girl", little has changed over their 43-single career. Although their own tracks were always laid-back and infectious, it was their reggae-lite makeovers of pop classics like "Red Red Wine", "I Got You Babe" and "I Can't Help Falling In Love", that brought their biggest hits and are the main focus of The Very Best Of. Not as comprehensive as previous compilations, The Best Of UB40 Volume 1 and Volume 2, it still boasts more memorable and happily lilting hits than most bands could lay claim to. Of those, two tracks standout a mile-the William Orbit (he who revamped American Pie for Madonna) styled production of their recent cover of "Light My Fire" is exceptional, but "Rat In Mi Kitchen", thanks to superb lyrics, sparse yet perfectly formed dub horns and a little hindsight, is just as good as Brit-reggae gets. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Bedtime Stories / Madonna:

On this, her seventh album proper, Madonna once again shows that one of her greatest talents is her ability to choose collaborators who bring the best out of her. This time around, the producers and co-writers include Bjork, Nellee Hooper (Massive Attack/Soul II Soul) and swing deities Dallas Austin & Babyface (who, amongst a myriad of credits, were the men behind TLC's CrazySexyCool). Mellower in the most part than her previous work, the album includes the usual handful of hits in "Secret", "Human Nature", the title track, and "Take A Bow", a duet with Babyface which is as beautifully glum as anything she's done. While the period between the Erotica/Sex fiasco and her triumphant return with 1998's Ray Of Light was a comparatively lean period commercially for Madonna, this album is up there with the best of her work. -Ronita Dutta.

Review Let's Get Killed / David Holmes:

When Danny DeVito commissioned Irish producer David Holmes to provide the score for the film Out of Sight, he chose wisely. Holmes's gritty, urban dance music, first exposed on the sadly underrated The Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats, is perfect for evoking scenes and atmospheres, yet it's interesting enough to stand on its own. For this album, Holmes and a friend wandered the streets of New York, collecting voices and noises; Holmes then assembled them into an imaginary soundtrack with the structures of modern dance music and the sonic qualities of rock and dub reggae. Let's Get Killed is a disjointed cut-up session that brings the grit and excitement of city life into your living room without leaving a drop of blood. -Matthew Corwine.

Review Baby One More Time / Britney Spears:

17 at the time of this release, Louisiana's teen dream Britney Spears works her guts out for every vowel and yearning growl on this impeccable slice of middle America. Partly produced from the same stable as the Backstreet Boys, Britney's songs have a strange, submissive twist: the full title of the mind-blowing debut single should be "Hit Me Baby One More Time. " Obviously "Hit"'s got an okay slang meaning now but the song and much of the mood of this album strikes a direct line to the Ronette's "He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss" in its desperate need to keep a boy by her side. Britney may be the young front for some middle-age money-makers but that's beside the point. She puts her life into this record; whether you like her teen pop or not, that dedication cannot be ignored. -Charlie Porter.

Review B-Witched [UK Version] / B*Witched:

Labelled Ireland's Spice Girls, B*Witched's self-titled debut album mixes snatches of Irish jigs and the girls' mellow Celtic warbles with contemporary hip hop and funk influences. Their first hit "C'est La Vie" opens the album and sets the scene with its catchy chorus and jaunty melody. Their follow-up single, "Rollercoaster", is included, along with other fun and contagious tracks such as "Rev It Up" and "Freak Out". Disney soundtrack-style ballads such as "Castles In The Air" and "Oh Mr Postman" are also interspersed throughout. Guaranteed 100 per cent Irish charm with this album. -John Galilee.

Review Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury (Re-Issue) / The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy:

Although this group is long defunct, its one major recording will be fondly remembered for years-if not decades-to come. The Heroes consisted of rapper Michael Franti and percussionist Ron Tse; together, the San Francisco Bay area-based duo created a biting, politically savvy record that touched on both personal vulnerability and governmental venality. Franti used the microphone to preach about injustice, homophobia, materialism, and apathy. Although Public Enemy had long before established hip-hop's political potential, they never quite attained Franti's ability to translate black rage into universal themes. In the Heroes' best number, "Television, the Drug of the Nation," Franti raps, "Imagination is sucked out of our children by a cathode ray nipple / Television is the only wet-nurse that would create a cripple. " Unfortunately, after extensive touring, the pair went their separate ways, Tse to a variety of solo projects and Franti to Spearhead. -Martin Johnson.

Review Now / Maxwell:

Three years after the scattered Embrya, new-soul prodigy Maxwell returns with Now, his most fully realised disc yet. While not as ambitious as D'Angelo or just plain flippin'-off-the-wall as Macy Gray, the singer-songwriter does claim a stance: acoustic-guitar-based, near-tone poems ("Sympton Unknown") and Kate Bush covers ("This Woman's Work") are hardly the stuff of your average pop-R&B love-man. Maxwell's lush thickets of overdubbed vocals could stand as a fine listen on their own; the varied textures of the instrumental tracks make the flow that much more inviting. A steel guitar subtly fires "W/As My Girl", while a rock-influenced beat gives "Temporary Nite" a groove both choppy and slippery. Now's unity of feel and often pensive tone bring it a cohesive air. Even the potentially throwaway last track, "Now/At the Party", works as more than just an exercise in 70s-party groove. If the many brokenhearted plaints here were telling a story, it would provide a suitably happy ending. -Rickey Wright.
