Review Fulfillingness' First Finale / Stevie Wonder:

Stevie Wonder was in the middle of a multi-album roll when he put out this funk and soul collection, clunky title and all, in 1974. As usual, he adds depth and unexpected touches to even the most straightforward love song-the moving piano ballad "Too Shy to Say" has a spooky feeling, as if "I want to fly away with you, until there's nothing more to do" is the saddest line he ever sang. The harder songs, such as the fuzzy funk of "Boogie On Reggae Woman" and the angry "doo-de-wop" attack on then-US President Richard Nixon in "You Haven't Done Nothin'", add urgency without sacrificing the album's cohesiveness. -Steve Knopper.

Review DJ Kicks - Thievery Corporation: Mixed By Thievery Corporation / Various Artists:

Washington duo Eric Hilton and Rob Garza have inspired a polarised love it/hate it attitude with their (admittedly) unique brand of dope-tinged sleazy listening, and DJ Kicks acts as the perfect vehicle for a set of Eighteenth Street Lounge foundtracks. The pair are more than comfortable with the responsibility, supporting their own mixes with classics from Jazzanova and Rockers Hi-Fi with some ethnic eccentricity courtesy of Up Bustle and Out and self-proclaimed jazz hooligan Rainer Truby, who ruffles the feathers of Bobby Matos' "Guiro Electro. " Cheery beats come from the studios of Karminksky Experience and A Forest Mighty Black, while the closing track is an exclusive from the lads themselves in the form of "It Takes A Thief. "-Kingsley Marshall.

Review The Garden / Zero 7:

Since remixing Radiohead's "Climbing The Walls" into a horizontal classic, `chill out' champions Zero 7-Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns-have gone from strength to strength. This third album from the duo is highly anticipated to say the least. Will the duo stick with the floozy, fuzzy, lounge-heavy sound that has made them famous? Or will they make an Air-style u-turn into rock/harder electronica territory. The Garden does it all. Enlisting vocalists Sia and José Gonzalez (Henry has a go too), the document displays many links back to previous work-warm synths, French pop flair, subtle world music influences-but also showcases a keener sense of experimentalism and a more driven, assertive sound. The contrast between the sultry, folky Gonzalez (who supplies four tracks, including a reworking of his own great track "Crosses") and the more soulful, upbeat Sia (who supplies three) introduces an interesting dynamic and help Zero 7 achieve what is ultimately a more mature and interesting direction. -Paul Sullivan.

Review World of Our Own / Westlife:

Westlife had announced that their third album, A World Of Our Own, would mark something of a departure for them as they eschewed their staple fodder of endless ballads, mixing things up a bit with up-tempo numbers. It could have gone all Spice Girls on them, but fortunately they've stayed true to their pop roots, and yes, amongst the ballads are some great pop stompers, but they all seem to fit nicely into the "steady" Westlife mold. Comic Relief single "Uptown Girl" makes a welcome appearance, as does the pop perfection of European smash "When You're Looking Like That", which radically reworks a ballad from their previous album Coast To Coast into something that Roxette would have been proud of 10 years ago. The vocals throughout are far more prominent and confident than on their previous outings, no doubt as a result of the extensive tour that they undertook between recording this album and its predecessor. And, as they continue to rewrite the record books with every record they release, Westlife really do seem to be in a class and world of their own. -Helen Marquis.

Review Music For the Mature B-Boy / DJ Format:

After unleashing a smattering of mischievous 12s and EPs, bonafide British b-boy DJ Format finally gets around to making Music for the Mature B Boy, his debut long player. Anyone who has already sampled the wares of this cheekiest of beatmeisters will know what to expect, namely tons of solid, ass-shaking, hip-hop-fuelled funk, peppered with spicy scratches and oodles of soulful sauce. Embellishing his distinguished, bass-heavy beats with rap performances from starlets like Jurassic 5, Aspects, Abdominal and Fatski, Format takes us back to the "innocent" era of hip-hop when the likes of Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Biz Markie and Brand Nubian ruled the roost and it was all about raw, optimistic sounds and hype lyrics. Though the vocal cuts here are unquestionably strong, the instrumentals are also packed with enough energy and funk to ensure they're irresistibly potent: vocal-less cuts like "Last Bongo in Brighton" and "Here Comes the Jazz" are classics in their own right. From the opener "Ill Culinary Behaviour" to the remix of Format's classic cut "English Lesson" at the end, this album is stacked full of good times and happy vibes and it's one party you'll want to be invited to this year. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Scissor Sisters / Scissor Sisters:

Those dismissing the self-titled Scissor Sisters as a product of New York's latest fad band are jumping to conclusions. Yes, there's a certain cabaret aspect to what they do, but that's not to dismiss them as frivolous nightclub entertainment. That's only half the story. "Comfortably Numb" may have nodded to gay disco but this eclectic bunch of fashionistas have more interesting reference points tucked up their puff sleeves. If anything, the prevailing mood here is sunny AM rock, the kind of thing you might have tuned into in 70s New Jersey. "Take Your Mamma Out", perhaps the first song about coming out to your mother in a gay club, and sung by Jake Shears like primetime Elton, is a cracker. So too "Tits on the Radio"-slick barroom boogie that takes a venomous swipe at New York's increasing conservatism. Best here, though, is the anthemic "It Can't Come Quickly Enough", a retro carve-up of Nick Kershaw and the Pet Shop Boys that's more powerful than it sounds. Ignore it at your peril. -Paul Tierney.

Review The Omd Singles / OMD:

After releasing "Electricity" in 1979, OMD quickly became one of the more influential electro-pop bands. While the premise of a singing synthesizer duo may now be a fairly conventional concept, Andy McClusky and Paul Humphreys had very few role models when they first developed their unusual style. This package pulls together two full decades of OMD's distinctive pop craftsmanship. From the early sounds of "Enola Gay" to radio classics like "Joan of Arc" and "Souvenir", OMD's polished, dramatic readings influenced everyone from Depeche Mode to the Pet Shop Boys. Late-1980s tunes like "If You Leave" and "(Forever) Live and Die" round out this collection. While not displaying all the more offbeat aspects of OMD's music, this package certainly delivers the hits. -Mitch Myers.

Review The Dock of the Bay: the Definitive Collection / Otis Redding:

Shortly after his breakthrough appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival, Otis Redding began talking of making a record that would be to soul music what Sgt. Pepper's was to rock. Sadly, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was the only song he recorded for this project before his untimely death, and so The Dock of the Bay wound up being a mixed bag of non-LP singles and previously unreleased material. Of course, Redding was such an amazing singer that even a ragtag collection of his stuff is worth checking out, and this album certainly has its fair share of high points, including "Tramp", a sassy duet with Carla Thomas; the funky "Don't Mess with Cupid"; and the unbelievably poignant "Ole Man Trouble". -Dan Epstein.

Take the sweet soul vocals of Caron Wheeler. Add jazzy hip hop beats and early Balearic rhythms. Mix with one of the most influential producers of the decade, Nellee Hooper, and pour through the musical uber-talent of Jazzie B. The result is Soul II Soul's seminal debut album Club Classics Volume 1. Although it was originally released in the 1980's, the chart-topping tunes still retain their credibility and freshness. Almost a greatest hits collection, the album contains "Keep On Movin'" and a phenomenal a cappella version of "Back To Life". An exceptional and innovative record whose rough edge keeps it fresh. -Ed Potton.
