Review Exile on Coldharbour Lane / Alabama 3:They're not from Alabama, and there's many, many more than three of them. In fact, Exile On Coldharbour Lane is the product of a warped gang of Scottish DJs, reformed junkies and sideshow entertainers. Don't be cynical, though-they've had a calling; the Alabama 3 gospel embraces Deep Southern Christian fundamentalism, revolutionary Marxism, serious drug abuse and the loved-up embrace of acid house music. Exile On Coldharbour Lane, however artificial, is a thoroughly enjoyable cabaret record. With titles like "Bourgeoisie Blues", "Mao Tse Tung Said" and let's not forget "Hypo Full Of Love (The 12 Step Plan)", Alabama 3 have created a peculiar fusion of country, techno, and hip-hop, and somehow made it funny. There's even time to fit in "Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness"-a traditional American folk number, performed with po-faced aplomb. You'll consider converting. -Louis Pattison.

Review Reflection Eternal [Train Of Thought] / Talib Kweli Hi-Tek:Silencing any suggestions that he is any less capable than his more high-profile Black Star partner Mos Def, Talib Kweli, along with DJ Hi-Tek, crafts a masterful debut with Reflection Eternal. Like Mos, Kweli displays an impressive range of styles and sensibilities-whether popping party lyrics on "Move Something", reflecting on the mysteries of the heart for "Love", or musing on hip-hop's death and rebirth for "Good Mourning". In comparison to Mos Def's status as a new funk soul brother, Kweli's more of a b-boy bookworm-erudite and articulate, but he can also let fly with fire and spark on the mic anytime. DJ Hi-Tek finally gets to show off his full range of production ability with a blend of hot, aggressive tracks ("Blast") and relaxed groovers ("Memories"). As good a debut as you could ask for. -Oliver Wang.

Review Utah Saints / Utah Saints:Straddling the gap stylistically and historically between the cut-and-paste acid house of Bomb the Bass and the big-beat explosion, this U. K. DJ duo fashioned recognizable samples from established classics into equally exciting contemporary dance singles. "What Can You Do for Me" mates Gwen Guthrie with the Eurythmics, while "Something Good" lifts a hook from Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting" (the first time she approved such a usage). Both those club hits appear on the Saints' sole full-length to date, rounded out by notable tracks including a shockingly traditional rendition of Simple Minds' "New Gold Dream" and "Trance Atlantic Glide" (designed to be spun at either 33 or 45 rpm). - Kurt B. Review La Revancha Del Tango / Gotan Project:Gotan Project give new meaning to the term French Dance Music with their debut La Revancha Del Tango. A collaboration between soundtrack composers Philippe Cohen Solal and Christophe Mueller and Argentinean guitarist Eduardo Makaroff, the Gotan project project are more about Tangos and accordions than chic disco-house and vocoders. And while the Parisian trio's debut is unlikely to set any superclub dance floors alight, it's unique, bewitching and incredibly French. Part ingenious dance hybrid, part spine-tingling soundtrack, the success of their peculiar mix of strident break-beats, eerie violins and those all-important accordions owes no small debut to Solal & Mueller's cinematic expertise. Exuding enchanting-chilling atmosphere, tracks play out like a sensual score to the nocturnal life of Paris' Latin Quarter. The longing melody of "Queremos Paz" and the jazzy "Last Tango in Paris" are pure romance, and the frantic Latin rhythms of the only real club contender, "Triptico", conjure the hectic café society, but most affecting are the backstreet sleazy of Epoca and swagger of "Chunga's Revenge"; both as hypnotic as they are sinister. Strange amalgams of dub bass and unhinged cabaret vocals add to Gotan Project's allure, but it's the passion and drama that mesmerise, and no dance music has more of both than a Tango. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde / The Pharcyde:Like De La Soul's Three Feet High & Rising, The Pharcyde's 1992 debut came at a time when hip-hop was headed in one direction and the group were going somewhere else entirely. A crew of spunky b-boys armed with a self-abating sense of humour, The Pharcyde made an album that was fresh and profoundly honest. "Ya Mama" is a clever array of mother jokes set to cartoonish beats; "On the DL" has each MC unguardedly making self-denigrating confessions (like Fat Lip admitting to masturbating-previously a hip-hop no-no); and "Passin' Me By" is an ode to hopeless crushes on unattainable women. The group's playfulness was also infused with smarts, too, most visibly on "Officer". Recorded around the time of the Rodney King verdict, the song was an indictment of racial profiling-shrouded, of course, in a comic tale that parodied Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos". With animated beats from J-Swift (the West Coast version of Prince Paul) and four distinct rhyming styles, particularly Slim Kid Tre's melodiousness and Fat Lip's nerdiness, this album captures an innocence rarely seen in the music's posturing ways. It is something that this album captures forever. -Joseph Patel.

Review Rodrigo Y Gabriela / Rodrigo Y Gabriela:Rodrigo and Gabriela are two fast-fingered, Dublin-based Mexicans with a unique sound created on acoustic guitars. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both world and rock, and often imbued with the timeless Hispano classical influences. The fire in it comes from their life-long passion for metal music. Rodrigo is a deft finger-picker who can move from raging speed to sensual soul in the space of a fret, while Gabriela employs fast, rhythmic techniques. Her percussionist's thrashing of strings and drumming of the instrument's body inevitably raises comparisons with flamenco which they acknowledge as an influence but swerve as a pigeonhole. The duo's repertoire flies beyond familiar Latin folk guitar styles because of the metal connection: their reworkings of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven and Metallica's Orion are musts, and the presence on "Ixtapa" of the fiery Hungarian gypsy violinist, Roby Lakatos, is inspirational.

Review Born / Bond:Born, the debut album by four conservatoire-trained young women has little to do with classical music. It's a gimmick, fusing a string quartet of frivolous femmes, spicy girls who all want to be "Posh", with dance beats, a big production mixing their violins, viola and cello with polished electronics. Add an enormous marketing budget and watch them top the charts. Taking themselves less than seriously-they played the James Bond theme at their Royal Albert Hall debut gig-pop "Victory" looks assured. This single bounces along with a dash of Rossini's Barber of Seville and a real sense of pop melodrama, in spirit little different from what guitarist John Williams did with his rather less photogenic band Sky in the late 1970s. What may surprise is that tracks such as the frenetic world-dance "Quixote" are penned by the film composer Magnus Fiennes, brother of the more famous Ralph and Joseph. "Winter" adds Jean Michel Jarre-style synth and voice-over to the ghost of Vivaldi and the infectious beat goes on, and on, and on. Sex sells, and Bond's success seems assured: this is a state-of-the-art product, but with Mike Batt of Wombles fame's bonus remix of "Victory" just don't expect it to be art. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review DJ Kicks - Kruder & Dorfmeister / Kruder & Dorfmeister (mixed by):Austrians Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, whose smooth and sexy acid jazz has attracted almost as much attention as their curious resemblance to American folksters Simon and Garfunkel, demonstrate their skills on yet another instalment of Studio K7's DJ Kicks series. The mix highlights the best of European trip-hop, acid jazz, and drum and bass, with their own "High Noon" and "Black Baby" mixed with tracks from British trip-hoppers Herbalizer, German technicians Hardfloor, and Viennese weirdo Patrick Pulsinger, among others. Their straightforward mixing is complemented by a heavy dose of studio postproduction but the emphasis here is on track selection rather than technical trickery. Like their productions, this DJ Kicks is classy, sophisticated, and surprising. -Matthew Corwine.

Review Hits: the Very Best of Erasure / Erasure:One of the greatest and most underrated electro-pop acts of the 1980s, Erasure seem to have let slip the crown of pop greatness with recent albums-so Hits!, an updated "Very Best Of", is more than welcome, lest we forget how fantastic they once were. Oddly, although Vince and Andy have easily released enough singles by now for a double-CD compilation, Hits has been pared down to a single CD, presumably to appeal to mainstream nostalgia-obsessed audiences. If that's the case, however, the choice of tracks is an odd one, as some of their best singles-such as "Who Needs Love Like That", "The Circus" and "Drama!"-have been overlooked in favour of lesser but more recent "hits" such as the anaemic "Freedom" and their recent "Solsbury Hill" cover. It's not all bad, of course-the first two-thirds of the album does exactly what it says on the tin, providing quality pop for the best part of an hour-but, overall, this is a disappointingly unnecessary compilation; those in search of a quality Erasure best-of would be far better off investing in 1992's Pop! The First 20 Hits. -Rikki Price.
