Review Ministry of Sound - the Annual 2005 [2CD + DVD] / Various Artists:As another year of clubbing comes to an end and we look on to new years '05, Ministry of Sound document a snapshot of '04 with their latest annual instillation The Annual 2005. The MOS Annuals have become more pop-centric since 2000 and this album is no exception. Thankfully, they appear to have walked the right side of the tightrope between crowd-pleasers and radio wish-wash this time around. Once again, this is a three disk box set release spanning 61 tracks. The cherry on top is that the third disk is a DVD showing some fantastic video clips. The first CD, the better of the two, includes some great tunes from the year gone by. Spankox's "To the Club" really represents and should have been the opening track. Another fantastic remix from Timo Maas, Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" is another highlight. The second disk tends to be a little watery and unfortunately includes the truly dire reworking of "Sweet Child of Mine". Kontakt's remix of "Sweet Dreams" has a little more soul to it. [+]And Khia's decidedly cleaner version of "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)" is a great edition. The same old gripes can still be had on this Annual. There are a few tunes that are plain annoying and the track placement hasn't been thought about carefully enough. Also, there are moments of mixing that are just downright poor. On the whole though this is a good addition to the collection. Yes, it's like listening to Dave Pearce on Radio 1 but if you know that before you buy then you shouldn't be disappointed. -Jarrod Rendle.

Review It Ain't Safe No More / Busta Rhymes:Busta Rhymes's sixth solo album, It Ain't Safe No More, loosely follows in the tradition of 1998's Extinction Level Event and 2000's Anarchy, offering up lucid, timely commentary over futuristic beats. In fact, his previous new world order rants provide a perfect prelude to his post-9/11 analysis on the title track. While Busta offers his unpredictable array of flows across the usual balance of club tracks ("Make It Clap"), hottie songs of praise ("Hey Ladies"), and obligatory street anthems ("What Do You Do When You're Branded"), one can't help wonder why he'd mix in tired concepts (south Asian compositions on "Take It off Part 2") or perform the pimped-out, playa routine on "Taste It", with its sundry-yawn-sexual references. Like its predecessor, Genesis, this album is sonically superior to most in the marketplace thanks to contributions from the Neptunes. While big name collaborations with Mariah Carey on "I Know What You Want" (where Busta croons) and Carl Thomas ("The Struggle Will Be Lost") don't exactly change the price of butter, hey, at least Busta's not pointlessly advertising chi-chi liquor companies this time around. -Dalton Higgins.

Review 7: UK Edition / S Club 7:If ever proof were needed of the power of television it lies in the meteoric rise to fame of the pop phenomenon that is S Club 7. Miami 7, the BBC's biggest export after the Teletubbies, has made Bradley, Hannah, Jo, Jon, Paul, Tina and Rachel household names in over 100 countries, given them a huge debut album and a string of top 5 UK hits. Their second series, LA 7, is similarly blessed with some of the shiniest pop going, although, thankfully they've given up putting the words "s" and "club" into every song. Aside from the R&B-lite "Natural" (up there with Britney Spears's best) and a supremely chilled cover of Urban Species' "Spiritual Love"-which together take care of the seven's more sophisticated side-7 is a full-on party bag of fun. Like party pieces "Love Train", "Bring The House Down" and the single "Reach", which follow the same route as the Spice Girls' "Stop" to high gloss Motown and unashamed cheese, the sole purpose of every track is to get pre-teens and drunk students alike on their feet and dancing. And while there's still not been an album to touch the Spice Girls' debut, 7 is proof that there really ain't no party like an S Club party. -Dan Gennoe.

Review Internal Affairs / Pharoahe Monch:Ex-Organized Konfusion kingpin Pharoahe Monch raps close to the bone. It's not until a minute into the shrill screams and "exposed clitorises" of "Rape" that you suddenly click that it's a metaphor for wack rapping ("they aren't fucking it right / ain't fucking it like me")-and by then, you've probably drawn your own nasty conclusions. Understand, though, that it's this abrasive style that lends Internal Affairs its ugly charm-and look first to the dark orchestral loop of "Simon Says" ("Simon says. GET THE FUCK UP!"), where Monch throws out threats, insults, and obscene sexual references with lascivious glee. Internal Affairs might be chock-full of menacing new-skool guest stars-Busta Rhymes, Canibus, Method Man-but it's on the closing six-minute tear-up of "Simon Says" that Lady Luck really lowers the tone, spitting darkly about "bitches in the back like crack being cut up". Incisions that are hardly incisive-but it's all part of Pharoahe Monch's visceral gut-punch; the twisted, foreboding Internal Affairs will send you sprawling. - Louis Pattison.
