Review The Other Side / Lynden David Hall:The follow-up to Hall's 1997 debut, Medicine 4 My Pain, The Other Side is more pared-down, with its spare, clean arrangements and cool restraint. As well as writing the songs, Hall has played all the instruments, and this has resulted in a more personal, intimate set. Hall is fast becoming an urban soul poet like Bobby Womack, investing his songs with an intelligent male sensitivity. There's "If I Had To Choose", his letter to an estranged father; or the insouciant "Stepping With Victor", where a seemingly flippant lover reveals his insecurities ("She was sleeping with Victor / and it's fine"); or the self-deprecating "Hard Way", where he croons: "All I'm left with is two prophylactics / I thought I came up to par. Review Y34RZ3r0r3mix3d + DVD / Nine Inch Nails:Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D-or "Year Zero Remixed", if you don't do leetspeak, is the latest example of Trent Reznor's urge to see Nine Inch Nails material dissected, reworked, mistreated and reinterpreted by his friends and peers. For many artists, remix albums are by their nature slightly uneven collections, lacking the common thread that makes a good record a consistent piece of work-yet past NIN offerings like 1995's Further Down the Spiral have somehow bucked this trend, and Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D is no exception. This isn't, you suspect so much to do with any similarities between the artists-everyone's here from British synth-poppers Ladytron to beat poet Saul Williams to minimalist classical ensemble Kronos Quartet-as it is the consistency of Reznor's vision; no matter how thorough the audio mangling, his damaged humanity still has a habit of poking through the gaps. Highlights include the smudged ambience of Fennesz's take on "In This Twilight" and the immersive, abstract techno of Olof Dreijer's 15 minute remix of "Me I'm Not", but the real coup here is two mixes by Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert of New Order that pull off machine-like synth-pop and drifting vintage electronics ambience leaving Reznor's vocals wholly intact. -Louis Pattison.

Review In My Lifetime / Jay-Z:In an earlier age, when the likes of Public Enemy and Gang Starr ruled the roost, Jay-Z would have garnered the same kind of serious attention and respect as, say, the Fresh Prince. But in the devalued hip-hop universe of the late 1990s-where political activism is irrelevant, and entrepreneurial mediocrities like Puff Daddy and Master P hold sway-it's tempting to hail him as a conquering hero. Tempting, but mistaken. For one thing, he lacks the pipes to be considered among the truly great MCs (Chuck D, Guru, Ice Cube, Method Man). For another, his rhymes-both structurally and in terms of subject-matter-are way too simplistic. Rather than draw any conclusions from his world, or postulate any form of action, Jay simply calls 'em like he sees 'em-a post- Biggie dialectic of thinly-veiled threats ("Friend Or Foe '98", "Face Off") and dreary self-aggrandisment ("I Know What Girls Like", "City Is Mine"). Review Until The End Of Time / 2Pac:More prolific than ever, the sadly departed Tupac re-emerges with yet another compilation of demos, unfinished thoughts and songs even he probably didn't like. Until the End of Time chronicles the fruitful Makaveli period of 2Pac's career, shortly before his untimely slaying. One of Tupac's greatest assets was the way he revelled in his own contradictions-as the way he'd drop an uplifting track like "Keep Ya Head Up" in the middle of a hardcore gangsta album. Despite moments like the pensive "Until the End of Time" or "Letter 2 My Unborn", an overwhelming majority of Until is straight "thug life". He's a masterful narrator ("Ballad of a Dead Soulja", "Last Ones Left"), but over the course of 90 minutes the "thugisms" get monotonous, especially given the number of songs that appear twice. The most intriguing moments of Until are the odd references-to his own death, to a young Jay-Z, to the then-unknown phrase "Bling Bling". This is an album strictly for die-hards. -Hua Hsu.

Review DJ Kicks - Stereo MCs / Stereo MC's:Whatever happened to the Stereo MC's? After winning a Brit award in 1993 for their fun and seminal "Connected" album, they seemed to disappear without trace. Seven years later, there's still no sign of a new album, despite repeated assurances over the years to the contrary. Stereo MCs: DJ Kicks may not be the follow-up album we're all waiting for, but it is the next best thing-a non-stop DJ mix from British hip-hop's long-lost sons. As mix albums go, it's a bit of a cracker. There's a rough and ready, funked-up party feel to proceedings, thanks largely to the Stereos' impeccable live mixing and eclectic track selection. In an action-packed hour, Rob B and the Head incorporate everything from old school hip-hop, disco and instrumental funk to jazzy break-beat and obscure orchestral pop. They even find space for a new, three-part Stereo MC's composition, "Rhino" [amazingly, their first new material since 1995]. Like all brilliant mix albums, there's never a dull moment, and each new track is as essential as the last. Great tunes, great mixing and a bunch of new Stereo MCs tracks.
