Review The Singles Of The 90s / Ace of Base:A modern-day Abba, some said. The Singles Of The 90s rather pours scorn on that epithet, though; Ace Of Base might have been Swedish, but it's there that the comparison ends. Brother-and-sister team Jonas, Malin and Jenny Berggren, along with companion Ulf Ekberg hardly began life as Eurovision fodder, forming Ace Of Base in response to a shared love of Bob Marley, the KLF and European techno. Accordingly, the early tracks-"Wheel Of Fortune" and "Happy Nation" hit odd, off-beat pop reggae shapes that, it's fair to say, aren't going to be covered by Steps in the near future. It's the later, shamelessly populist singles that please and cloy in equal measure-worldwide No. 1 hit "All That She Wants" still sounds great, but the dumb good vibes of "Life Is A Flower" and "The Sign" still sound like something's been lost in translation. -Louis Pattison.

Review Xtrmntr / Primal Scream:It's seldom that a band's sixth album is their best, but Exterminator is nothing less than a radical new dawn. Only a few years before, Primal Scream seemed spent-a smack-addled joke, numbing the pain with the idle comfort of rock & roll cliché. Exterminator is the Scream's baptism of fire-an album with a righteous social conscience, it rages against apathy and injustice with all the funk-fuelled indignation of Sly & The Family Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On. Musically, too, Exterminator is shackled together with a coherence that's eluded them since 1991. From the tense industrial trance of "Swastika Eyes", to the scurvy-thin hip-hop of "Pills" and the exultant Krautrock of "Shoot Speed Kill Light", one minute the 'Scream are diseased and desperate, the next they're basking in glorious, righteous euphoria. Review Tubular Bells 2003 + Bonus DVD / Mike Oldfield:For Tubular Bells 2003, the ever-perfectionist Mike Oldfield (unhappy, apparently, at the odd bum note on the indubitably classic original) utilises the latest studio techniques and trickery to re-record his flagship classical/folk/rock instrumental masterwork in its bar-for-bar entirety. It may be true that The Bayeux Tapestry would look pretty good if someone re-embroidered all 230 feet of it on a modern sewing machine, but that's hardly the point. Surely, the original Tubular Bells-16 million sales, reverential status, important historical artefact and so on-has more than enough going for it? Although the production here is fatter and brighter, playing "spot the musical difference" between this and the one that continues to pay for Richard Branson's hot air balloons may require levels of diligence and dedication bordering on pottiness, which in a way is kind of a relief. There are minor distinctions-louder bass guitar, better sounding bagpipes, Sally Oldfield (presumably) joining Mike for a grunt on the always-amusing "Caveman" section and John Cleese playing Master of Ceremonies on "Finale" (saving his best "pining for the fjords" voice for the announcement of the arrival of the "double speed guitar")-but, by and large, the apple cart remains upstanding and no babies are thrown away with the bath water. -Kevin Maidment.

Review The Album / Panjabi MC:With the massive smash of "Mundian To Bach Ke" behind him, Panjabi Mc is the latest Anglo-Indian to smartly mix hip-hop, garage and reggae. The Album sets out to capitalise on his success but Rajinder Rai is no newcomer, having been on the circuit for over 10 years. In 1999 he made the biggest-selling bhangra record ever: that was Legalised, his third album. The Album is a sort of greatest hits record that catches Panjabi MC in transition from bhangra singer to urban rhymer, and his early attempts at gangsta rap such as "Soundz of the Des" and "True MCs" sit at odds with his latest work. As "Mundian…" was based on the Knight Rider theme, so "Jatt Ho Giya Sharabee" rides on top of the theme from Magnum. "Jugni" dips deep into the bhangra and breakbeat back-catalogue to pull up something truly unusual whereas Jay Z's remix of "Mundian…" is essentially the US rap superstar rhyming over the top of the same beat. It's not revolutionary, but Jay Z is a big name for a Coventry artist to get on board and certain to bring in extra fans. -Jake Barnes.

Review Ready To Die / The Notorious B.I.G.:During the Reagan era of "all-for-me" economics, MCs like Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap painted pictures of silky rap gangsterism inspired by movies like The Mack and Superfly. Out of the post-Reagan rubble came Notorious B. I. G. 's debut, the hustler reality trip Ready to Die (also the LP debut of beat-thief producer Sean "Puffy" Combs). Biggie still rhymes about the gold, the Moet, and the ladies, but he also reveals the casualties on the road from struggler to hustler to player. "Juicy" sets up Biggie's rags-to-riches story, but then the curtain gets pulled back with unapologetic, hardcore tracks like "Gimme the Loot" and "Machine Gun Funk". It's a funky album (just try not throwing your hands in the air when you hear "Big Poppa"), and it's a powerful album-possibly even the Mayflower of 1990s East Coast hustler rap. -Todd Levin.
