Review World Clique / Deee-Lite:

This debut is Deee-Lite's most consistent record and subsequently their best. By freebasing the previous three decades of pop culture, World Clique is a rush of beats, hooks and fashion sensibilities. "Groove Is in the Heart" brings one of the best and funkiest bass lines ever to the dance floor. Lady Miss Kier establishes herself as a stylist-both vocally and visually-capable of casting some serious shade. World Clique manages a seamless merger of house beats, a trippy 1960s vibe and an over-the-top 1970s funkified sound, thanks in part to DJ Towa Tei. "Good Beat" serves up what its title promises, while "Power of Love" goes one better by adding one of the strongest melodies of the band's career. By punctuating their songs with quirky bleeps and rhythmic kitsch, Deee-Lite predicted the DJ-dominated craze that would spin the latter part of the 1990s into a tizzy. -Steve Gdula.

Review Step One / Steps:

When he split from his 1980s buddies Stock and Aitken, those who loved pop feared that there would never be another record to come from pop svengali Pete Waterman. Then, out of the blue, came Steps, a five piece who were shockingly group-by-numbers for their bland first single (the aptly titled "5,6,7,8"). Then, with "Last Thing On My Mind", an immense, Abba-like paean to heart-break, the group became whole-an immense camp beast, whose songs kept giving to everyone from Teletubby toddlers to ageing old queens. That the band are singing Waterman's trademark open-sore teen ditties helps ("One For Sorrow"-can you bear the pain?), but what completes the brilliant package is the routines. Each song has an aerobic-like succession of weird hand poses and body-twists that should, if you're being good, be learnt by rote from their videos. But what the hell-come on and do some bad vogueing to this great, bad-but-cool pop. -Charlie Porter.

Review Around the World - the Journey So Far: the Hit Singles / East 17:

East 17 were the Rolling Stones to Take That's Beatles; and while subsequent tabloid controversies and 1998's ill-advised Tony Mortimer-less comeback have since rendered them something of a joke, this greatest hits collection is a reminder of how good they used to be. It contains eleven top ten hits-from 92's "House of Love" to 97's "Hey Child"-and a perhaps surprisingly large number of real classics: "It's Alright"; "Steam"; "Deep"; the Gabrielle-featuring "If You Ever" (which doesn't appear on any of their albums) and the 1994 Christmas Number One "Stay Another Day", in both original and pointless remix versions. With Tony Mortimer seeming to have turned his back on the music industry and the remaining trio being dropped by Telstar, the East 17 story may have come to an end, but this album is a fitting legacy: silly, cool and beautiful by turns. -Ronita Dutta.

Review Gatecrasher Disco-tech / Various Artists:

In 1999, with trance sweeping the Western world like some gurn-inducing plague, Gatecrasher has been called "the most influential club in the world", and there's little denying that Sheffield-based super-club pieces together definitive double-CD mix compilations like they're the genuine article. By now, though, part of the charm is the way Gatecrasher's collections deviate from the beaten track: Disco-Tech thunders into life with the apocalyptic dub strains of Leftfield's "Afrika Shox", shocking the cheesy euro-dance disciples out of their reverie at the first high-octane hurdle. That's not to say that the trance massive are going to be put off by Disco-Tech, though, as brutal techno segues into the edgy tech-trance of Satoshi Tomiie's "Up In Flames", and into a concerted spell of boundary-warping, line-crossing, but eternally populist dance-floor recreation. There's still the likes of System F's "Out Of The Blue" to endear this to the Top 40 brigade, but Disco-Tech proves that Gatecrasher's still a worthy, innovative market leader. -Louis Pattison.

Review Chosen Lords / AFX:

The lengthy hiatus that followed Richard D James' 2001 Drukqs album led many to believe the veteran switch-doctor had gone into early retirement. Last years Analord series - forty-one vinyl-only tracks spread over eleven volumes, collected together in a special binder - reinstated his reputation as technologically advanced shaman (of sorts) and stellar purveyor of acid-drenched basslines, floor-slaying electro and bewildering polyrhythms. On Chosen Lords, James brings together the best of that series, reworking and re-sequencing the fibrous strands of electro, acid and techno to create a mesmerizing tapestry rather than a dry collection of individual vignettes. Though the material is new, Chosen Lords sounds like a retrospective of all the various shape-shifting James has tried his hand at over the years. It's not his best work by any means but it serves to further highlight his individuality and show there's plenty of life in the AFX name yet. -Paul Sullivan.

Review Born to Do It / Craig David:

The scene was set before Born to Do It's release: Craig David, garage pin-up superstar and king of the two-step scene. Er, not quite. Apart from the two chart hits he'd enjoyed with the Artful Dodger and as a solo artist ("Rewind", "Fill Me In" respectively), this is an R&B album aimed firmly at-and inspired by-America. The slang, the beats and the sentiments all echo Eric Benet, R Kelly and the rest. At times it's almost comical: Craig's trouble is that better artists have already been there and done that-and they've done it, well, better. When Craig does break from slavishly following American influences, he becomes the promising artist that those first two singles hinted at: "Walking Away", with its electric guitar and slight folk feel, stands out a mile from the rest. There's no doubt that the boy can sing, and at 18 years of age maybe it's too much to ask of him to project a strong identity. The photography, the lyrics and the sideburns all hint at maturity that isn't there yet. Three albums down the line we could be hearing a good Craig David album, rather than this mediocre debut. -Jake Barnes.

Review Fly Or Die / NERD:

Fly or Die, the second album from NERD is, irritatingly, not quite what you want and never quite what it seems. That's not to say it isn't occasionally brilliant, just a little taxing on the grey matter and something of an eccentric folly. If you're looking for the pop accessibility they produce as the Neptunes, frustration may force you to wish you'd never been swayed by all that hip rhetoric. Of course, Pharrell Williams is a star in his own right and can croon like the best, so it would be churlish for him to omit a crowd pleaser or two. Hence the spaced-out "She Wants to Move", a funk-rock belter that contains the line "Her ass is a spaceship I want to ride". The rest of the album feels awkward, drawing on a confusing roll call of influences, including prog rock, the Beatles and Hendrix. But there's wheat amongst the psychedelic chaff: "Wonderful Place" stands out a mile as the best thing on here, a slice of toasted soul baguette that's as heavenly as manna. Often infuriating, yet never predictable, NERD shine when they get it right. Just forgive them their youthful indulgence, if that's what it takes. -Paul Tierney.
